Hi. I am new 2 this forum and I would like some advice on a 500pt army any help would be useful and appreciated.

WELCOME! always good to have more brothers in arms!

getting to the meat of your question, are you playing by standard rules/ force org, or modified combat patrol rules, as are ever so popular for small battles? Also, are you considering dipping into stormtroopers, or maybe assassians, or should we stick with the GK models?

Assuming your playing with normal rules, you sadly don't have much choice. The minimum PAGK squad is 150 points and a Brother captain is 61, so your minimum forced cost list with 2 troops and an hq is 361 points (assuming your not dipping into stormtroopers or an inquisitor).

I find a solid list to be 7PAGK with one incinerator, 7 pagk with one psycannon, and one Brother captain. Though not the most optimized list, it's as forgiving as a very small points value pure GK list can be, with a bunch of troops and some special weapons.

A common loadout for me is one 5 man squad packing two psycannons and an 8 man squad escorting a brother captain that has hammerhand.

One i've always wanted to try is the min number of GK with an inquisitor lead and 3 DC assassians, as i think it could do well in such small points. I've also never tried bringing a dread, because as the only armored target it dies quickly and your left with not much.

At 500 points you'll find pure GK games challanging, but very rewarding of skill and experience, so keep playing battles and trying new tactics. This is because we get so few models compared to other armies, but they are very elite and can do anything. We just have to decided exactly what the thing we need to do to win IS, and then execute it.

Maybe try a B-C with psycannon and two 6-man GK squads with a psycannon in each. You can drop the pc's for more bodies but you might need them for any light armor you may go up against. As MJ said though, at this points level it will be a challenge. Oh, and welcome.

thank you for your help I've thought about the pure force and have decided that if grey knights are too points costly i could try someting like this
1 Brother Captain=61

9 PAGK=225
1 Justicar=50

9 Stormtroopers=90
1 flamer=5
1 grenade launcher=10
1 Veteran=20
1 hellpistol=1
1 close combat weapon=1

Total=443pts which leaves me with 57 pts spare for a rhino or some unit upgrades. so what do you think and thank you again for your contribution. Very Happy

you may want to think about if the opponent has vehicles, as you have nothing but a grenade launcher that can touch any armor value

i still have 57pts left i could get some krak grenades or melta bombs. scratch this force would mainly be played against my brother and he only has one rhino so it shouln't be to much of a problem but tham you i will think about this info. Very Happy

Are you using the combat patrol rules or normal rules? Because if you're using the combat patrol rules then you could let the knights deepstrike and butcher his long range support or get down in the way of the armour you have trouble with and shred it with nemesis force might.
If not, you could also think about giving your troopers meltaguns or plasmaguns.

I love Brother MJS's 500 points; 2 versatile squads of GK and a Brother Captain with Psycannon can deal with a lot at that point cost Very Happy

If your mixing it up with IST's, you can try to fit in a squad of PAGK's to smack the hell out of squads that could disrupt the shooting.

thank you we usually use combat patrol rules but i like the idea of 2PAGK squads and a psycannon brother captain so it depends what rules we are using. but thank you for all the info. soon we will be playing 1500pt games so that should be easier to work out. Very Happy

hi just played a match against csm and totally butchered them the game lasted 5 turns and i had a full sqaud of grey knights and a brother captain and a single storm trooper left i had killed 15 chaos space marines a lord and 3 terminators and i was overjoyed every time i made an armour save with my storm troopers as they were stuck in close combat for 3 turns butthe brother captain and grey knights just killed every thing they touched they killed the lord and turn 1. In small games the grey knight heroes and terminators are just brutal, no other description about it.

The stormtroopers reminds me of a funny game I once had, a 6 man squad of troopers got in combat with a khorne lord with daemon weapon. First turn the lord rolls a 1, losing a wound to the daemon weapon. Second turn he fails to hit/wound but my troopers inflict a wound. Third round, he kills 5 and the last remaining trooper adds another wound before running away.
