Cheese or truth?
Saw this a few days ago regarding Allies of convenience or desperate allies.

I could see how it's unclear. But I don't want to believe it. What do you other brothers think?

Re: Cheese or truth?
I would rather not watch 15 minute videos... Just give me the short version

Re: Cheese or truth?
Short version:
Allies of convenience, in particular troop choices, would act as denial units against you as they are treated as enemy units.
Further, if someone double charges a unit of yours and your allies, they could be drawn into combat against each other (they can't charge each other but can come into base-to-base contact due to piling in and therefore fighting each other when the enemy unit is wiped out...).
In regards to RAW, this sounds possible, it requires you to go into serious rules lawyer mode and bring together something like 5 rules to come to this conclusion but the logic is sound. However, for RAI, I personally don't think that should work for Allies of Convenience at least, Desperate Allies maybe, but it seems broken to me... I for one would play it as RAI rather than RAW as otherwise that would be ridiculous and therefore mean you wouldn't ever want to take allies as Grey Knights in an objective based game if your allies of convenience can deny you objectives...

Re: Cheese or truth?
They cover a few different things in the video:-Arratak- wrote:I would rather not watch 15 minute videos... Just give me the short version
1)Allies of convenience/desperate allies can deny objectives held by your troops
2)Desperate allies/ allies of convenience units that are killed during the Purge the Alien mission count as a VP for you
3)They did a demo where some nids multi assaulted some allied necrons/smurfs. They claimed that during the pile in moves, the unengaged allied units would have to move into B2B contact with each other since they count as enemy units and then they'd be stuck fighting.

And that's all because Allies of convenience/desperate allies are "counted as enemy models." Thus, in the rules for CC or holding/denying objectives would have to be reconsidered.

This strategy works, and fits with the GK fluff. Just ask the Space Wolves!

Re: Cheese or truth?
Maybe I should watch this. I don't normally watch these clowns as they harp on and actually have never played a real game of 40k. I don't have the rules on me now, but I will check this out and get back to you, as I don't want fellow grey knights players, playing by false rules.
I do recommend that you read the rule book carefully and check the rule book FAQ (v1.2 is the latest) before making any assumptions based off what some scrub says.
