1000 point army! Empty 1000 point army!

Post by Brother Origar Mon Jan 21, 2013 12:25 am

Hey there guys! Im new to the forum and pretty new to warhammer 40k, but i'd say im pretty comfortable with my knowledge. Please excuse me in advance if im posting in the wrong spot.
In a week or so after i've saved enough money im going to start building a small grey knights army, the only problem is.. I have no idea where to start, or what would be a good way to assemble the units. I was thinking of starting with two Grey knight squads and Lord Draigo. I would really like to build an army around him, but im not exactly sure what's viable. Im quite open to ideas and also where to start. Thanks in advance!

I'm currently working on an 1850 army with draigo now, ill have the list up later tonight, however if your army aiming for a smaller force, draigo is perhaps a bit on the expansive side, being around 26% of you army in 1 character.

I know he's quite expensive, but the thought of having a super badass, near-unkillable grey knight leader is just so.. appealing. And Im going to be doing small, 1k-2k 3vs3 battles. So perhaps and 1850pt army could work for me.

Yeah he's quite appealing, hence why I've re-arranged my list for him. After doing some calculations, 75pts more for draigo over my standard grandmaster is ok for me to pay. But it's difficult in a tourney setting when you try and scrap for every spare point.

welcome brother Origar
enjoy your stay here.
A 1000 points list is maybe a little short to play Draigo... you'll have a very small body count, but as i often say : play what you find fun to play.... ! Twisted Evil Wink
So to be really fluffy why not using a full Terminator footslogging list (paladins are imho too expensive for 1000 points though), with as much psycannons as you can get.
Though with a small body count, in 1000 points this list could be hard to destroy anyway ! Twisted Evil

Welcome Brother! Draigo is fun to have although Aubec is right that it might be better to use him at at least 1750 pts and higher.

So, what is a good set up that you guys would recommend for 1500 points or so? Paladins or no? I find the differences between paladins and terminators always confuse me..

For 1000pts, I would go for cheaper HQs--maybe Inquisitors or a Brotherhood Champion.

Here's a sample:

HQ- Ordo Malleus Inquisitor w/ TDA, hammer & psycannon; psyker
TR- 5 GKT w/ 1 psycannon
TR- 10 GKSS w/ 2 psycannons and psybolt ammo
FA- SR
HS-Dreadnought w/ 2 x TWLAC w/ psybolt ammo

Comes to around 915 pts.

The 2 best choices for a cheep hq are the inquisitor Rivan has used above or Coteaz. Rifle dreads are also good for their points. Troops wise the strike squad is (IMO) the best option. A land raider can be hard to deal with at low points and so can a dreadknight, but will require some good play, because if used wrong or up against the wrong army (dark eldar for example) can result in 25% of your army gone in one turn.
If you are asking what to buy then the answer is simple. 2 Terminator box (this would give you the ability to make up a lib, Grand master, inquisitor in terminator aromur and some normal terminators), 2 grey knight strike squad boxes (this will give you a squad to use as either strikes, purifiers, interceptors or purg), codex if you do not already have it, 2 dreads (also get ac arms for both as this is the best build (forge world), 1 razorback (can be used as either a rhino or a razorback) and an agis line (the gun can be converted to be the A.C's for a dread if you want). This would give you a good start and would be around the 1000pts. In most cases sword will be better then halbards but you should have at least one hammer per squad, and maby a couple of halbards in each squad.

Yes you can, the only difference is you stand there and say "these are terminators" or "these are palidins".

Yes you can make paladins or terminators from the GK terminators box.

Paladins have 2 wounds each, have WS5, can have 2 special weapons/5 models and have the Holocaust psychic power in addition to Hammerhand.

So, I could make a squad of "Termiators" And depending on my current army and style, I could say they were either Paladins or Terminators depending on the battle?

Yup. I use the same models for paladins and terminators. Nothing to really tell them apart other than what's written in your army list Smile

Some people find it worthwhile. I just don't have the patience to do that for infantry models Laughing I do magnetize sponsons for tanks though.

But I have so much GK stuff (building a whole brotherhood) that I just make sure I have all weapons represented Smile

Is there a good site that shows how you can magnetize them properly? Because i'd really hate to take away from the models, doing a bad job magnetizing them.

welcome to Grey Knights Brother Origar! I have an upcoming team battle where we each are bringing 1000 points and here is the list I have decided on.

hq-Grand Master Mordrak

tr-5 Terminators 4 force swords 1 hammer

tr-5 Strike Squad one will have a psycannon

el-4 Paladins 3 force swords (one also has psycannon) and 1 hammer

hvy-Dreadknight with heavy incinerator, heavy psycannon and daemon hammer

dt-stock rhino (for the strike squad)

This comes to an even 1000 points and suits my style well.

I was planning on putting Mordrak with either terminators or paladins and deep striking them on turn one with no drift to get safely and quickly across the board. His grand master special will allow me to either give the the paladins and or the dreadknight the ability to be scoring units, or scout, or counter-attack depending on game type.

For paladins and terminators I like the swords because they change the invulnerable save to a 4+ in close combat, but the halberds are tempting too with +2 initiative. And then hammers and psycannons are always nice.

For the strike squad they will be riding around in the rhino hopefully getting some good shots out of the top hatch with the psycannon, but ultimately will be used as scoring units.

Dreadknight is just a menacing brutal model, he draws a lot of attention and fire and allows me to do what I need to with the rest of my force. Although I do have two stormravens and love using them too, I just wanted more firepower this game.

Welcome to the forums Tiberian Smile

Not a bad list...only thing is I'm pretty sure you need a minimum 5 paladins to be eligible to take a special weapon.
