1750 points GK vs Necrons

Post by Souba on Wed Feb 08, 2012 10:57 pm

greetings brothers. first of all sorry that i couldnt continue the batrep of the tournament. i lost the papers with the notes of the tournament as i moved in the new appartment.

im looking forward to play against the store manager of my local GW wich also Dark Bjoern already fought against. he challenged me and is still trying to get every opportunity not to play against me because he is a pretty sore loser and from time to time cheats if things dont go his way and sneaks some dice in or even doesnt accept some dice that roll hard against him (like "oh sorry i didnt saw you rolling those 2 sixes, please repeat"). thing is... i really want to shoot & hack his ass off the table. i grabbed the necron codex off a friend and read it so often that i can telll its rules, weapons and statlines from the head. for the confrontationi optimized my list for his necrons. as i dont know what he will play eventually against me i tried multiple battles against a friend so he can also test a bit with the new codex and options. here is a report of the latest fight:

we rolled for seize ground with 4 objectives. deployment was spearhead. i won the roll but decided to let him go first. we placed our both objectives and he decided to take the upper right halve to be his own. i rolled for grand strategy and got a 1. only one unit to give a rule to i gave my purifiers the scout special rule

Battlefield:

Deployment:

he put his lords each into one warrior unit and in the immortals. imothek joined the immortals and the harbringer of despair joined the deathmarks.

his immortals + imothek stood on his objective out of line of sight. he placed 2 camps, the barges and arks also stood out of line of sight, the wraiths stood close to the midfield the deathmarks were held in reserve. he hid most units in line of sight & too long range for nightfighting except the Destroyers so not much targets to shoot at for the first turn.

i attached my libby to mordrak and his ghost. placed my dreads behind LOS and strike squad 1 onto the objective. i held the rest in reserve. i decided not to steal the initiative so it started with necrons Turn 1:

Necrons Turn 1:

imotheks lightings crashed down on Dread 1 and hit it 2 times wich one caused a shaken result. imotheks he moved his units towards the objectives. the annihilation barges 1 & 2 fired at the strike squad 1 but only one was able to see through far enough through imotheks nightfight rule. still they killed 2 Strikers. the destroyers tried shooting at the dread but failed due to the nightfighting rule. nothing more happened and turn one of grey knights starts.

Objectives:
Necrons 3 Grey Knights 1

Grey knights Turn 1:

Mordrak appeared, i deepstrikes him, his ghost knights and the attached libby close to his ghost ark 1 he decided not to make use of the deathmarks interception rule. dread 1 made his fortitude roll and the dreads moved. in the shooting phase dread 2 tried shooting at the Ghost ark 1 but couldnt see it due nightfihting. dread 3 fired also at the ghost ark 1, glanced and penetrated once. the glance got saved due cover but the penetrating roll destroyed it. 2 necron warriors died in the explosion. dread 1 fired at the destroyers and managed to kill 1 heavy destroyer. strike squad 1 fired at the canoptic wraiths and caused 2 wounds on 2 different wraiths (damn you whipcoils!). the librarian in mordraks unit channeled the powers of the warp and used warp rift. he hit 5 units with it wich all failed their inititave test. combined fire of mordrak and his ghost knights anihilated the remaining 2 warriors and the lord, letting him no reanimation protocols with that unit. at the end of my turn he tried to ressurect the fallen heavy destroyer but failed. end of grey knights turn 1

Objectives:
Necrons 2 Grey Knights 1

Necrons Turn 2:

imotheks night fight continued and his storm hit mordraks unit. thanks to the terminator armour those 3 lightnings didnt made much but tickle the termies. he rolled for reserves for his deathmarks but they didnt made it in the fight. he moved his units tog et better in range against night fighting.
the destroyers shot at Dread 1 but didnt made any damage. anihilation barge 1 & 2 combined fire against the strike squad and anihilated it. the wraiths had no target to assault and ran towards the tower to get some LOS against the dreads. imothek and his destroyers shot at mordrak and his men but failed to cause a wound.

Objectives:
Necrons 2 Grey Knights 0

Grey Knights Turn 2:

mordrak used psychic communion and i made reserve rolls. the termies came in aswell as the purifiers. the strike squad rolled a 1 so had to stay off the board. i shocked my termies close to mordraks unit so they can home in on the libby. everyone made his difficult terrain test and held the objective. the purifiers combat squad'ed 1 melee unit 4 halberds + hammer (P1) and one unit with the psycannons + halberds (P2) both units however had to move in from the left table edge. the dreads moved back up and mordrak and his boys walked towards imothek.
in the shooting phase, dread 2 and & both fired at the anihilation barge 2 and managed to destroy its twinlinked tesla destructor. dread 1 fired at the canoptic wraiths and killed 2, leaving 2 woundsed and 1 unwounded one remaining. purifier unit 1 fired their stormbolters at the destroyers but failed to cause a wound. purifier unit 2 fired at the destroyers too and made scrap metal out of them.
mordrak and his unit tried shooting at imothek but failed the night vision. the terminator unit tried it also and made the night vision roll. killing 4 immortals in the process but 2 made it back with reanimation protocolls.

Objectives:
Necrons 2 Grey Knights 1

Necrons Turn 3:

he rolled for reserve and his deathmarks made it in. he deepstriked them close to my termies but scattered to the southwest. he marked the terminators with the deathmarks special rule.
imothek made his roll and let nightfighting remaining. the lightnings rained down upon purifier squad 1, killing a purifier and hitting dread 3 4 times, causing a shaken and a immobilized.
he moved his anihilation barge 2 closer to imothek and anihilation barge 1 backed a bit off. in the shooting phase, the ghost ark 2 and its warriors shot at the purifier unit 1. causing 11 wounds but i only failed 2. 2 purifiers remaining. the anihilation barge also shot at the purifiers but only killed 1. only one purifier remaining with a halberd.
anihilation abrge 2 fired at mordrak but didnt caused any damage. imothek and his men did the same and caused a wound on mordrak. wich didnt spawned a additional ghost knight.
thanks to the deathmarks mark ability the flamer of the harbringer of despair wounds on a 2+ gladly he scattered far enough away and only hit 3 models with the flamer. thanks to the ap 2 he killed 2 termies, the shooting of the deathmarks however got shrug off the terminator armour.
the wraiths moved towards dread 2 and locked it in combat but didnt caused any damage.

Objectives:
Necrons 2 Grey Knights 1

Grey Knights Turn 3:

i used psychic communion again and made reserve rolls. the strike squad made it into the game and deepstriked close to mordraks libby and his homer. dread 3 made its fortitude save and shrug off the shaken. mordraks unit moved close to imothek, the termies moved in to the deathmarks, the single purifier moved close to the ghost ark. dread 1 moved forward to get a better view on anihilation barge 1. in the shooting phase the purifier unit 2 shot with 16 psycannon shots at the ghost ark and caused 2 glances and 2 penetrations. it exploded and killed 3 warriors. dread 1 fired at the anihilation barge 1 and stunned it.
dread 3 fired at anihilation barge 2 and destroyed its remaining weapon and immobilized it. the libby in mordraks unit channeled the power of the warp again and summoned a warp rift. it caused 7 initiative test wich me made 2 of killing 4 immortals and the necron lord. the stormbolter shots from mordraks unit killed 1 immortal and caused a wound on imothek. the grey knight strike squad fired at imotheks unit too and caused another wound on imothek and killed a immortal. the terminators fired 2 stormbolters and a psycannon at the deathmarks. killing 2 deathmarks.
in the assault phase. mordrak and his men ran into imotheks unit. buffed by might of titan from the librarian they killed the whole unit inculding imothek. the terminators charged in at the deathmarks and used hammerhand, killing the whole unit. the lone purifier ran into the warriors and channeled the cleansing flame wich killed 2 warriors. his halberd attacks killed another one. the 4 attacks that came back at him didnt caused any damage to him. he lost the combat by 4 and failed his morale check and got sweeping advanced. in the consolidation phase i moved my units more into cover. the combat with the wraiths and the dread still was a stalemate.

Objectives:
Necrons 0 Grey Knights 0

Necrons Turn 4:

imothek comes back from the dead with 2 wounds and the anihilation barge 1 makes its roll to get cleansed from stunned to revenge the fallen warriors he shoots at the single purifier and kills him. imothek uses the special rule of his stave and in the shooting phase kills 2 ghost knights, causes one wound to mordrak wich spawned a ghost knight in the process and caused a wound on the libby. in the assault phase he charged mordraks unit but got beaten to dust in the process. the eternal combat of the wraiths and the dread remained but 1 wraith got killed. the dread however got wrecked.

Objectives:
Necrons 0 Grey Knights 0

Grey Knights Turn 4:

the terminators moved back onto the objective. the strike squad did the same but had to run in order to do so. mordrak and his unit moved towards anihilation barge 2. the dread moved a bit away from the wraiths and the purifiers moved closer to get a better view at anihilation barge 1 wich thanks to the glance no longer had quantum shielding. in the shooting phase the purifiers caused 1 glance and 2 penetrates on the anihilation barge 1, wrecking it. dread 1 & 3 combined fire and killed off the wraiths. mordrak and his unit got buffed by 2 hammerhands and might of titan and caused a whooping 11 penetration rolls. letting the anihilation barge explode wreck etc multiple times. as he had no longer any units on the table or in reserve this game ended at GK turn 4.

Objectives:
Necrons 0 Grey Knights 2

thoughts at the end of the game:

he wanted to test a unit combination i showed him and if that combination didnt scatter too hard it would have wiped my terminators out in a instant. the deathmark + harbringer of despair combo only costs 125 points without further upgrades and those mark abilitys work for every deathmark unit.. making 3 of such units pretty hardcore infantry killers. mordrak and especially the libby shined in this fight. warp rift is just too good against necrons. the wraiths were originally my main priority but due to the line of sight i couldnt shoot as often as i wanted on them. the solo purifier rocking the house was pretty hilarous for us and the friends spectating. was a fun round and was one of those rounds i could sharpen my list on.

well done brother, and happy the game turned straight and fair !
generally speaking, it's curious and kind of rare that a GW manager cheats, and i'm happy he didn't try this time.

no no, this battle report isnt from the fight against the store manager as he always slips away and skips our fight. sadly... i just hope i can grab him soon and shoot his butt into the orbit.

Good win brother! you showed those wannabe schwarzeneggers!

Im just really curious why he wanted nightfighting... Seems to be troubling him at least as much as yourself since he didn't bring any solar pulses... granted solar pulses would be even better if he had brought a doomsday ark

Right now i feel necrons are manageable for a GK, though difficult. Wonder how much of that will change with their second wave arriving (doom scythes etc)

They´re manageable for us. Special when you play against this guy. I´ve beaten him in a kill point mission 5 to 0. In turn 4 he gave up.

Hey Souba, gratulation. I guess Alex was not very happy to lose again with his Necs?!

ah brothers.. for the 3rd time, i didnt fought the store manager yet because everytime i ask him to play our game he "has better stuff to do" (even with early store buisness done and a empty store except me)

i played multiple games against a friend who owns 17k points of necs like this list he tried some combos in this one it was the death mark combo wich worked well if he didnt scatter. now hes going to take 3 units of those and we test it again.

the problem with solar pulse and imothek is. you lose a full round of imotheks lightnings if you use a solar pulse. and i you are using mostly mid range weapons you dont suffer that much from nightfight. the average shooting distance with nightfighting is 21" most nec weapons in his list are max 24" so it aint that much of a problem.
in the case of this battle my friend rolled just badly. multiple 1's to see how far he can shoot hurt any list, even double tapping bolters.

actually out of 13 games i played against different nec players i never lost one. only had one draw so far against them. the new book is okay and got some really awesome synergy but the problem with that book is that if you as concentrate to shoot one of those links down they crumble pretty easily.
