1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
Hello everyone,
as i am planning my purchases, i'm looking at different "base" to start my army on. One that was recommended is to use Draigo and his paladin, flanked by Autocannon Dreadnought. I like that idea, as i really want an all terminator army, but i want to know with you guys if you think its a solid list against pretty much anything.
Draigo
2x Venerable Dreadnought with 2 Twin-Linked Autocannon and psybolt ammo.
10x Paladins with 4x Psycannon and 10x Nemesis Force Sword
1x Paladin with Nemesis Force Sword
1 Dreadnought with 2 Twin-Linked Autocannon.
The lone paladin is to get the whole "deathstar" deal, and still cover the 2 minimum unit of core. Not much scoring, which could be a problem (but i get the feeling its the same problem for most GK), but alot of anti-tank/flyers, and hopefully a unit that can kill pretty much anything in cc.

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
Dreadnoughts are only worth taking in the support slot - ven dreads are too expensive for limited gain.
You need a mix of swords, halberds and hammers in your Palladin squad. mine usually looks something like this:
1 sword, 3 hammers, 6 halberds

So,
instead of the 2 venerable and 1 standard, i go for 3 Dreadnought with psybolt ammo.
with the 10 Paladins (3xforce sword Falchions, 3xHalberd and 4xForce sword (not much daemon around here to justify the hammer)), i have 175 pts left.

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
I dont understand you concern about a lack of daemons.
it flat out increases the str x2, (which is applied after hammerhand - str 10 marines) it also has concussive, and ap 2... so its instant killing most normal things, and quite easily blow up landraiders and the like.
not to mention it gains all the usual benefits of nemesis weapons... i.e. force weapon (just incase your going up against something higher than t5) and daemonbane... which given the amount of psykers being used its worth it
the only downside is striking at initiative 1. but if it can survive, then its going to eat everything it touches.
as for force swords... whenever i run termies i never take them. 4++ save in combat... or buy a warding stave for a 2++ in combat... i know what i would pick. swords are very lackluster to me

Falchions aren't really worth it, especially on a squad that size. You could spend the points on a banner instead and increase all the paladins attacks by one, plus the bonus of automatically passing the force test. The extra cos for a venerable dreadnought isn't worth it either, you're paying 60 more points for 1 extra BS, and seeing as how they're already twin linked this is not going to make much difference, especially not 60 points worth. I usually run my paladins with a banner and then halberds and hammers divided amongst the others, incinerators if in a landraider, psycannons if footslogging.
Hope that helps

didn't know hammer were x2 str (still very new to those power weapon thingies, my poor Dark Eldar have their own rules most of the times).
so instead ;
3x Daemon Hammer
2x Halberd
3x Falchions
1x Staves
1x Banner
with replacing my Venerable with standard (3 of them with psybolt ammo), i have 135 pts left for my other troop.

You could with those points give the lone paladin a couple of buddies to sit on an objective with. So he doesn't get lonely

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
How about something like:
HQ:
Draigo
Malleus Inquisitor - terminator armour, psycannon, psyker (choose divination and take prescience everytime)
Troop:
10x Paladin (4 psycannons, 6 storm bolters; 1 banner, 3 hammers, 6 halberds)
3x Paladin (3 storm bolter; 1 hammer, 2 halberds- still unsure about this...)
Heavy Support:
2x Psyfleman Dreadnought
Everything is still focused on the 10 man paladin squad, still covered by the dreadnoughts but now the big paladin squad will have twin-linked shots AND melee attacks most turns and have gained an additional psycannon thanks to the inquisitor. Oh, and the other paladin now has some buddies.
That list comes to 1475 so 25 spare points to upgrade your small paladin squad (you will gain hardly anything mastercrafting the weapons of the large paladin squad with the inquisitor there). Do NOT buy any flachions, they are a waste of points especially as you can improve your invun save or increase you initiative at no cost!

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
noted. so 2 Dread, 13 Paladin, Draigo and an inquisitor in power armor. Sound good.
and when i look at 1850, all i need is to add 2 paladin to the squad (to get them to 5) with 2 Psycannon, and another Dreadnought. still 70 pts for funs or a 6th Paladins, or other equipment for the unit.
Time to get on the purchasing!

Damn right, it's what grey knights are all about.... Whooping someone when you're outnumbered 5 to 1. It always fills me up with feelings of epicness.

Terminator armour dude (you can make him from the spares of one of your GK terminators box :p )Enkiel wrote:noted. so 2 Dread, 13 Paladin, Draigo and an inquisitor in power armor. Sound good.
In terms of kits you'll need:
-Draigo
-3x GK terminator
-2x Dreadnought kits
And bits:
-2x Psycannon
-2x Daemonhammer
-2x Quadgun from the aegis defense line kit
If you can afford to splash out a little bit more, i'd recommend getting 2 Grey Knight MkIV Dreadnought bodies from Forge World instead of the standard dreadnought kit, they look so much nicer!

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
forge world is already considered for the autocannon and the dreadnought. was thinking of getting the two different models.
Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
Great upcoming list! Draigo wing is a great list, terminator armour rules!!!!!
You could also build a Draigo from the plastic GKT kits if you want an original look to the leader of your force. The forgeworld dreads do look great don't they, many players buy the contempt or dreads and use them as regular dreads because of the amazing models.
I am looking forward to seeing this for e grow.

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
So with much pondering, and while waiting on paint to dry, i came up with my final list.
Draigo
5 Paladins
3x Halberd
1x Warding Staves
1x Hammer
2x Psycannon
5 Paladins
3x Halberd
1x Sword
1x Hammer
2x Psycannon
2xDreadnought
Psybolt
2xTL Autocannon
DreadKnights
Personal Teleporter
GreatSword
Incinerator
Psycannon
Now, with this list, i have 2 question ;
#1 : Termi must use the psycannon as heavy. Can they still walk and shoot without snap firing? Tried to find something that said so, but feels like they have the same rules as standard infantry.
#2 : Dreadknights, same question. I think since he's monstrous, he can shoot everything without snap firing, but i'm not 100% sure, and for some reason, i can never find what i'm lookin for in that damn 40k book!

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
Termies are infantry but because of their Terminator Armour they get the Relentless special rule, which allows them to fire heavy weapons at normal BS when moving (it's in the Codex, page 63: Armour)
Monstorus Creatures (including the NDK) can fire up to 2 weapons (it's in the Unit Types section of the rulebook)
Great list BTW!

Re: 1500 pts army, Dreadnought and Paladins
me and my friends have a running joke about rules within rules.
it came about after having a sub-rule to a rule to another rule which had been errata'd. as this is the game of remembering things, they dont make it easy to remember stuff lol
