Re: Role playing campaigns !!!
For the moment there is no play-by post or skype (or whatever) rpg planned on this site.
But it shouldn't be too much of a problem trying to plan one.
What would you want to play? What kind of story?
If it's a play-by-post i'm kinda used to running them. Played a bunch of times and been gm a few as well. (On a few other sites. Only one game on this site.)
If we can get the interest from a few others and find out what to go for i'm all for playing some rpg's!

Re: Role playing campaigns !!!
Well, online rpg's usually are kinda simple. One is designated gm and dictate the actions of the others. Although the players need a high degree of freedom since you can't dictate how every action will go like in normal pen and paper roleplay since we live on different places of the earth and rarely are awake at the same times.
A good way to set it up is to have it weekly.
A set group of players are allowed to post in the rp, they have great freedom but must follow certain rules. I have made and broke such rules myself so i'm used to its effects.
The gm (game-master if you didn't know) describes a scene where the heroes are faced with a problem, or just are.
For example.
----------------------------------
Grey knights Librarian Martel stood upon the scorched remains of the hive city Bermuda. Molten metal fires had reduced most of the surface into a slagfilled nightmare landscape that could break underfoot at any moment. Sending the poor victim plunging through the floor hopelessly in the hands of gravity and to be embraced by the emperor as they would plummet towards the lower levels of the hive.
With him was a no-nonsense battle brother of the grey knights, like himself this knight were experts in expunging the deamonic of this world. His name was Weizz, and usually lead a squad of grey knight brethren, but he had come adrift from his squad and worked to find them.
With them was also a dubius operative of the adeptus mechanicus, a techpriest named Metallus Magnus Ohmnati. Claiming to be an inquisitorial acolyte and even bearing a rosette to prove it.
But non-the-less, it is hard to trust the hooded red priests of mars.
As the unexpected party of allies navigated the trecherous paths of the molten hive, a path led inside.
As the first to enter, Weizz noted that the insides were mostly intact and apart from some large holes in the roof and floor of the hive plane inside, the path seemed safe.
-"The path ahead seems more stable than what we have left, brother...... techpriest.... i believe the way ahead is much safer to tread." Said justicar Weizz as he turned the others.
-"Well, let us be going then? Or shall we further enjoy the view, 'angels of the hammer'?" Metallus metallically tinted voice sounded. Both brethren of the grey knights were surprised at the level of sarcasm and disgust the techpriest managed to sqeeze into a simple sentence like that.
A bright light pulsated some two kilometers ahead. Perhaps it is what librarian Martel was looking for?.....
-------------------------------
So that could be my update, now you as librarian Martel may dictate what you do. Rather freely, you could look at surrounding buildings and with the freedom of doubt add things that fit into the scene.
Let's say you describe as Martel look around, he spots a ruined building with a vehicle inside.
Most probably you will just get going towards the goal. But you can to some extent dictate the actions of npc's (like Weizz and Metallus in this example.) As long as it fits their motives and previous actions.
But dictating stuff around oneself can easily lead to a term known as Godmodding.
This is when a player just starts dictating everything and acting like he was the gm. This is severely frowned upon and only the gm has full rights to take control of any character.
But in play-by-post games there needs to be a bit of lenience. At least regarding to npc's.
During a week the players all post and do things. Describing themselves travelling, checking stuff out.
As much as possible, the gm should be there to add details.
After a week comes the update. This is a predetermined time and can range from weekly, by-weekly or even daily if so inclined.
The update is a deadline, all the players should have posted at least once and dictated the significant actions they are performing.
So perhaps in the above example, Martel convinces the techpriest to take a look at the vehicle. But sadly it is irreparaible, and as such you just keep walking.
In the update, you have all come much closer, and the pulsating light is revealed!
Or something, pacing is different from game to game, this is just an example and what you can expect with me as a gm.
A skype session is straight forward, you just time it and hook up on a chat service. Then you have an ordinary roleplay session, except you are hundreds of miles apart. And mostly can't see each other.
I've never had such an experience.
But, there are some things i know is key in both scenarios.
1) A dedicated gm. He has a story, a plan and intends to finish it. Going great lengths for everyone to have a fun time.
2) Dedicated players. Whom are interested in the story, and intend to finish the rp. While having a good time on the way.
3) A plan. Rules and an idea. So that everyone is on the same page as to what can be done. What is allowed and how much can i dictate. How long should posts be and how long MUST they be?
How often can i post and how often does updates apply?
Is there some game specific rules. In perhaps a nation builder game there can (and should) be loads of rules regarding resources and armies moving.
4) A gm that is aware. If people are loosing interest, try to wrap it up instead of the game waning into a standstill where it is forgotten. This is REALLY bad. And have happened to me several times. Both as a player and as the gm.
These are the basic things. And i have both succeded and failed at every part in the past.
As for me, i would want to be a techpriest. I love techpriests

I participated in the last GK RPG on this forum, and I would be willing to do so again.
Ant chance of Grey Knight Terminators being allowed?
I believe that the campaign stoped rather abruptly and enexpectedly last time

The ending was very rushed. Why i do not know. Most probably because Amareo Davion got some real world problems that needed to be solved.

Re: Role playing campaigns !!!
I personally am no fan of dark heresy ruleset. It was the first rpg i ever played and as such close to heart but not really a fan of it.
The usual way of going at forum rp characters is to just describe them.
I'm gonna steal a character sheet from heresy online as example.
----------------------------------
Character-Sheet
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: [first and second names only, Madanians do not have any more than two]
Title: [based on your class and house, be creative]
Age: [minimum 21, maximum 46, but bear in mind the average life-expectancy of a Madanian is surprisingly high at around 85]
Personality: [how you are as a person, your individual traits and habits, the way you speak to others and what you think of them]
Appearance: [your body/facial features as well as the clothes you wear most often, pictures welcome & encouraged]
Personal History: [how did you come to hold your current office? what is your background?]
Faction & House: [choose one of the four Factions and one of their main Houses from the Factions listed in the second post]
Traits: [choose Traits from your Class list in the second post]
Resources: [choose Resources from your Class list in the second post, and organise them as you see fit: clear organisation will have benefits in-game! This is where you also detail your Army, if applicable]
Drawbacks: [these will be assigned to you once your character-sheet has been accepted, and will be noted in the third post containing all character-sheets]
Home-Location: [this will be assigned to you once your sheet has been accepted]
Treaties: [this will change as the roleplay progresses, and will be edited into your sheet for you in the third post]
---------------------------------------
This is straight copy paste, the first thing i saw.
As you can see, some of the things are specific. Like treaties.
Most of it is just general stuff.
When roleplaying space marines it's rather simple this way. Everyone knows what a marine is expected to do, and can somewhat realistically do that without rulesets.
I'd say keep it simple.
If you want to use dice, i can fix any dice you want on the site. I am an admin after all, i added the d10 after all
But you could just have like this.
We make characters sheets like the one above.
You put us in a problem, if you want to use dice you can either roll secret real dices at home and just dictate what happened. Amareo did that.
You could just dictate it.
Or roll open dice on the site. Depends on what we decide upon when creating the game. All of them works, others are just more flexible than others.
In a play-by-post i would keep it as simple as possible.
Perhaps when an action is attempted, roll a d10. High is good, and just go with what you feel like.
In a skype game i could have a real ruleset. I know dark heresy sorta well so that would work great for me.
A ruleset in pley by post like dark heresy would bog down the game immensly, but that's just my view on things. Others should give input here on what they want.
Oh, and quad post.
Not really kosher. Keep the double posts low.

These are the classes I will have Purifier, Librarian, Paladin, and Techmarine. Player can armed their character however they like. Just as long as the unit can use the items in the codex.
In order to make it more interesting you all may take an optional gun Servitor (armed with multimelta), set of three multiuse servo skulls, psyber eagle, or jokaero.
