LA Battlebunker GT results
Had a fun one day GT at the GW Los Angeles
battlebunker. It was only 3 rounds at 1500 pts. They made it a
throwback to the old style GT's where each round is a fixed 6 turn game w/ a 2
hour time limit). The missions were a throwback too w/ a few twists.
My List
HQ - GM w/ p-cannon, p-hood, incense & icon
3 GKT (1 'cinnie; 1 TH/SS)
TR - 6 x PAGK (2 p-cannons); targeter for the justicar
TR - 6 x PAGK (2 p-cannons)
TR - 5 x PAGK
HS - LR w/ ea & smoke
HS - LR w/ ea & smoke
Round 1: Vs Eldar
My opponent had 2 dire avenger squads, 1 fire dragons squad, 1 howling banshees
squad, 1 pathfinder squad and a farseer. All but the pathfinders had wave
serpents (2 of which had TWL bright lances).
Mission was to plant as many flags in the ruins. A scoring unit must
occupy a building to plant a flag after which it can move on to the next
building. There were a total of 4 buildings and deployment was spearhead.
This was one of the best (and most fun) games I recall playing because it came
down to the very last shot fired that determined the outcome. We each
quickly claimed 2 buildings each and it was a matter of trying to outmaneuver
each others' elite units. What tipped the cat & mouse game in his
favor was I wasn't able to stop the banshees transport before it was able to
get behind my troops' lines. I had to pull back my HQ LR to deal with
it. The GM wrecked the transport with his p-cannon and assaulted the
banshees (after combined fire from my PAGK squads whittled them down
first). Wiped out the banshees although I lost 2 GKT. However, this
cost me valuable ground and time in getting my HQ squad to one of his
buildings. Surprisingly, my 2 LR's were still intact at the end of the game (although 1 had no lascannons left ) even after weathering bright lance shots and melta shots from the fire dragons. Towards the end, the justicar of my 5 man squad was the last man standing and holding one building. He weathered pathfinder shots, shuriken catapults and a ton of other shots and made roughly around 10+ saves, except the very last die roll where I rolled a 2. 3-1 flags and victory for the eldar.
Round 2: Vs SW
1 rune priest, 1 wolf priest, 2 x 10-man grey hunter squads w/ rhinos, a 10-man blood claw squad, 1 LRC, 1 long fang squad, 1 wolf guard unit in TDA
Mission was to capture the hill at the center of the table and deployment was pitched battle.
This was one of those games where I guess no matter how well prepared you are or how brilliant your tactics are, it just didn't matter In complete reverse from the first game, I can't recall ever rolling so bad in one game. I rolled so many 1's that my opponent started to feel bad for me In the end though, sheer numbers of troops won the day. He had 30 vs my 17. All my units got bogged down or tied up and he's able to capture the hill with 1 troop unit. Victory to the SW.
Round 3: Vs CSM (Iron Warriors)
1 chaos lord, 6 chaos termies, 3 x 10-man CSM w/ rhinos, 1 vindicator, 1 pred (autocannon and lascannon sponsons)
Mission was annihilation w/ DoW deployment.
Pretty straight up. I had range and shot and stayed back as much as I could. Edged him by 2 KP. Victory for the Grey Knights.
As I said, it was a lot of fun. At 1500 points, I felt the model count difference much more than at the previous 2000 pt GT's I've attended. Maybe because my 2000 pt list has units that compliment each other and make the overall strength greater than the sum of its parts. Anyhoo, there were three tourneys going on (W40K, Fantasy and LoTR) and each had its own set of awards: Best Overall, Best Sportsmanship and Best Painted. And there was a final award, the Player's Choice where all the players from all 3 tourneys vote for their favorite army.
Happy to say that I garnered the Best Painted for 40K AND the Player's Choice overall!

Re: LA Battlebunker GT results
Well done, sir. Good to see you take the painting award again. And I agree, for some reason it's a real struggle for me at 1500 points as well. Below and above I have much better results. My two best tournie results were at 1250 and 2000 points. Dang those trophies are sweet for just a one day tournie.

Thanks NF. Also found out yesterday that the next major GT (from the same organizers of the last two I attended) is on the last weekend of May (Memorial Day)...so I'll be fielding my 5th edition Grey Knights then!!!

Re: LA Battlebunker GT results
Very well done. Your personality in person seems to match your presence on the forums (and you painting skills!).
Congratulations.
Edit: I just noticed the paintbrush in the award model's hand. Quite humorous and fitting.
Edit 2: Did Kyrox attend? If so, how did he fare? Sorry if I messed his name up a bit, trying to get this post out quickly so I can get to bed...
Congratulations.

*Wipes tear from eye*
Brother Rivan you have brought great honor to all Grey Knights! What a fantastic way to end the long 3rd Edition ^^ Such armies as Space Wolves and Eldar are very tough, but I am glad to see you gave such a good fight! And managing to destroy the foul taint of Chaos, you did what you set out to do! Thank you for the battle reports!
And it comes as no surprise that you won Best painted and players choice!! Truly something for all hobbists to aspire to !

Thanks guys!
@Souba: I would definitely have at least 2 new units done by end of May: a SR and a GK LRR. I'm almost sure I'll be using these units. And then maybe a few new plastic GK's to sprinkle among my current units depending on gear options

@Xethik: Kyrox was with me but he didn't play. He's still working on his SW army to get it ready for the May GT we're attending. He was there to look at other SW lists to get more ideas on modeling and tactics
@Aubec: thanks Brother A!
