Suggestion: batreps.

Post by Pyriel on Sun Feb 10, 2013 6:23 pm

Sorry if this is the wrong place to share an idea (if so remove this).

I suggest that we add a dedicated battle report section to this forum.

people can talk strategies in the various batrep threads and also request batreps.
Say someone has troubles with orks for example then one of us who gets to play a game could face orks (even specific lists requested by the people in here) and give a detailed report after wards with or without pictures.

Then the whys, wheres and whats can be discussed.

We do have a dedicated thread for battle reports. I've seen a few discussions there as part of comments on a specific battle report. Does it not fit what you're thinking of? If not, we can discuss it further.

Well, I had kind of a tutoring thing in mind where people can actually post wishes like what they have trouble beating and asking if someone could use their GKs against that very army the next time they get a game and post the result.

That sounds interesting. I'm thinking it will be specific requests for tactics vs. a specific army using batreps as a medium.

Go ahead and start the thread and we'll see how it develops. We can consider engraving it later on Smile

Well, I thought this could be the thread (see if it takes hold).

I will have a game this week so if there are any serious requests and reasons for them I might think about doing a batrep based on that.

This probably belongs in the tactica section.

Move

There, seeing how it is a thread about requesting tactics, it makes sense.

Now for the topic itself.

I think it is a wonderful idea, seeing how people often have trouble with facing certain foes and giving out a helping hand is always appreciated, both newbie and veteran could probably give out their best tips and tricks and learn some things in return.

The best batreps have a few pictures in there and a simple layout with easily manageable text to follow.
(I get discouraged from reading any indication of wall of text, the thing i did above sometimes feels much to me.)

It should also focus more on the tactics used, why a certain thing was called for.
My kind of batreps would be worth little, it's a fun story of how i narrate a game i played and add character and jokes to the different events of the battle.

Although fun it is worth little for a real gamer, or for someone seeking advice.

So a focus on why and how to implement units, some list building tips (not to much though, this is more about the tactics) and you have a solid tactica example.

I'm all for it, get a nice camera and snap a few shots, mostly of scenes which in your mind make excellent examples of the tactic you want to show off.

I would love to see how to tackle the guard, they seem indestructible to me Crying or Very sad

One of the reasons i stopped playing 40k regularily.

Last week i had a hard time taking out Abaddon and a squad of terminators. They wiped out my squad of 10 termies and Librarian. And in return i wiped out his terminators. But abaddon was real tough especially as twice in combat he rolled a 6 on his daemon weapon to get additional 6 attacks.

I managed to knock the inv save off with the vindicare and then took 2 wounds off with my stormraven but this was all too little too late.

Any tactics on wiping these guys out would be awesome.

I think that's where the problem lies.. lol!

I haven't had experience playing against him but by looking at his stats and reading his reviews, you could tell that he is obviously a monster in CC. I think the best approach is probably the same as how you'd deal with regular terminators. Kite them and you either shoot them with AP2 weapons or make it rain with a ton of shots to force a lot of wounds. If you are planning on getting into CC - or its unavoidable - the best thing I can see is using a brotherhood champion or even crowe. This way you have a few options:

  • challenge
  • choose turtle stance (blade shield)
  • or go for the kill (rapier strike)
  • if all fails, resort to heroic sacrifice

At best you'll be trading a 100 pts for 265 pts. Don't use empyrian brain mines because he's I6 and will pass all of his tests automatically. Also remember that our nemesis force weapons are daemonbane and so he has to roll for a leadership test if he takes any unsaved wounds. I don't think it counts as instant death, our codex says he's removed as a casualty so it should work.. But yeah the brotherhood champion is actually really good, reroll to hit on the charge, reroll to wound, and if he's with a squad with HH cast it! If you have a librarian you could cast Sanctuary, forcing Abbadon to be I1 since I don't think he runs with any grenades and it'll force him into a dangerous terrain check (who knows maybe your opponent will roll double 1's), you then have hammer hand, might of titan, and quicksilver. I don't suggest using your libby to be CC oriented though, he has so much potential to do more. Hope this helps.

Great idea Brothers.

I too have an upcoming mini event this weekend, so I would like to hear your thoughts about the new Tau. I'll be playing against 2 opponents playing Tau, and I also was thinking to add some Tau fun in my list. Any thoughts?

Re: Suggestion: batreps.

I think a good idea would be to watch battle reports of off miniwargaming.com. Sure they get rules wrong sometimes, but its all a learning experience. They've had maybe 3? battle reports with the new tau, I believe.

After staying up all night working on my take home test I'm not sure if I could provide the best tactical advice, but I'll do my best. I'm surprised to not see a lot of Commander Farsight turn 1 deep strike nonsense. It seems like a better version of Mordrak Rolling Eyes You get a ton of shooting and no one would dare charge into a 8 suits with whatever guns they have. So far stealth suits seem to be a problem with 2+ cover, but we have incinerators for that. I think the bigger problem is the ion cannons on hammerheads that are Str8 AP3. Combine that with Pathfinders... oh boy. Our PAGK won't really stand a chance. If we revert to terminators they'll just get kited because of the moving ability in the assault phase that tau do. Plus tau pack a lot of AP2 anyways from melta and plasma. And don't forget about their bombers.

So here's what we could do. If they're running farsight, we want to go first so our GKSS can cast warp quake. We also want servo skulls to stop Farsight from coming in and wrecking havoc. Coteaz is a great choice for a lot of reasons (going first, having rules against DS). Another good option is to use NDKs w/ Incinerators and teleport homers. They could take a beating and deliver punishment (that's if you're worried about stealth teams). Interceptor squads should work too if you don't want your heavy slots taken up. You then have psyflemen dreads to take care of vehicles and air. How I see it now, we have to beat tau by either CC or out shooting them. The problem is CC was nerfed in 6th and they have amazing shooting. They out range us and outgun us, so we have to position well. How we get into position will be key. So teleport homers could work or storm ravens or even a land raider. I say focus on what's going to be killing you. Take out the pathfinders and vehicles and you'll be able to do fine. Fire warriors are relatively squishy and break most of the time. so you don't have to worry about them until later.

Oh, and you could run some crazy secret tech like Culexus or Callidas Assassin. The Culexus won't usually get shot up with his special rule, the forum determined that they still need to roll D3 leadership for overwatch since the rules says whenever he's "shot at" and not just the shooting phase. If the tau player is leaving his guys out in the open you could have the Callidus show up on turn 1 and blast away! Plus the pathfinders are leadership 7 so neural shredder will do some work. Twisted Evil

Just some thoughts from a noob.
