It came to my attention while perusing the Bolters and Chainsword forums that equipping a Justicar with a halberd works best for challenges. I have typically equipped my Justicars with hammers so that I could mastercraft them in hopes to reroll a failed hit. However, I'm inclined to pull out the scapel and reaugment my models and place the hammers on regular models while replacing my justicar's weapons to halberds. Another point made against equipping hammers on a Justicar is to prevent losing a hammer to Perils of the Warp. Any thoughts?
I'd say a Nemesis Warding Stave is just the way to go, I mean 2++ is just insane against anything. Funny how these were so overlooked in 5th but now they start to be pretty cool...
I agree if you have the points then warding staves are epic, several of my opponents have had to change their lists because their big bad beatstick char was bouncing off my justicar while his squad killed everything else. However if points are tight then the halberd is easily the best choice, most other squad leaders are 3+ or worse save and few can match I6 giving us the advantage. This works even better with units like purifiers where the leader has the same amount of attacks as a regular guy so you lose nothing by hiding your hammer elsewhere.
Staves are boss. I went toe to toe with a hive tyrant for 3 turns with just a justicar in a challenge. The stave has kept him alive through many a challenge...kinda makes me want to put one on my grand master!
I spent most of my day converting my Justicar's hammers to warding staves and hammers. After swapping out the heads of each of the weapons from different models and pinning them onto each of the staves, I appreciated the "new and unique" look each stance offered on each model. The custom job looked great!
