Advice please?

Post by InquisitorIII on Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:32 pm

Brothers:

I'm brand new, and am looking for a logical place to begin building a force. I know I want some Purifiers, as I bought Crowe for my first HQ. I am looking to start a solid army since this will be my first foray into wargaming; I am sure there are dozens of these threads here, so please have patience with another noob. I've looked at the Army List section, and I'm such a noob I'm having a trouble deciphering which kits to buy to make what forces. I'm looking to make a start at about 1000 points. What do I buy?

Thanks in advance to all of you.

Well if you're trying to keep it simple, here's a quick 1000 point Crowe list:

-HQ-
Crowe@150

-Troops-
10 purifiers@357 w/ 4 psycannons, 6 halberds (Knight of the Flame's halberd is mastercrafted), psybolt ammo, rhino
10 purifiers@357 w/ 4 psycannons, 6 halberds (Knight of the Flame's halberd is mastercrafted), psybolt ammo, rhino

-Heavy Support-
Dreadnought@135 w/ 2 Twin-linked Autocannons (one on his left, and one on his right)

Total Points: 999

It's pretty cookie cutter, but it's a simple Crowe list.

What you will need to buy:
1. Crowe (which you already have)
2. 4 boxes of standard Grey Knights (there are 5 Grey Knights in a box)
3. 4 psycannons separate (you'll probably have to Ebay this or something, but each box only comes with 1 psycannon, and you need 8 total psycannons; be sure to get the psycannons that are for the Grey Knight models and not the terminator ones)
4. Dreadnought or Venerable Dreadnought kit (whichever is your preference, as they are only aesthetically different) and some manner of converting the weapons to the twin-linked autocannon weapons. A common way of doing this is to buy the Aegis Defense Line because it comes with a pair of twin-linked autocannons.

I wouldn't go off an buy this stuff until someone else on here comments on it. You'll probably want a consensus, but I think it would be a fine cookie-cutter Crowe list to get going with.

EDIT: You could also just leave 4 of the psycannon guys without arms and wait until you buy more psycannons to actually finish modeling them. Most people won't care if you do this, as long as you are clear that they count as holding psycannons. You could do the same with the dreadnought.

the standart GK box comes with : 1 incinerator 1 psilencer and 2 psycannons. he wont have to buy additional psycannons.

what he also could use is 1-2 rhinos/razorback. whatever he likes more. not only for his current 1k army project but it is also a good invest in the future

OH! Silly me. I even went downstairs to look at my sprue to check... I am, admitedly, VERY bad at finding things on sprue. Anywho, that just makes it easier to put this army together. And yeah, you could make it 2 razorbacks instead of 2 rhinos by dropping the mastercrafted upgrades.

Just in case you were not aware, Brother InquisitorIII, you do not have to model the fact that a weapon is mastercrafted, you simply spend the points and treat it as such. Sorry if this seems obvious to you, but I just want to make sure you know.

I've edited my original post BTW.

EDIT: Brother Souba, I wish I had a nickel for every time you've caught one of my not-so-smart errors Razz

Brent hit the nail on the head - it's a very solid and simple list that works well for beginners. It gets you used to our low model counts, pretty good shooting, and decent CC ability, and makes you learn the shoot shoot shoot shoot assault tactic that works so well for us.

Very happy to help Brother! Very Happy

Like Brother MJSwasey said, use this list by shooting, shooting, shooting some more, then follow it up with a tad more shooting. After all the shooting, move in to clean up the rest with your halberds. We cost extra and die just like any other space marine in close combat, so you've got to whittle down the opposition with storm bolters and psycannons before hitting them with your halberds.

Keep in mind that Crowe is not and independent character, and as such cannot join other units. Use him as a singular model that hides in terrain while moving up to some larger threat that you want to tie up in close combat so that it cannot harass the rest of your army.

Use the dreadnought to destroy light armored vehicles (which will be almost any vehicle at 1000 points), then use it to help whittle down the model counts in large or close-combat oriented units before moving in the assault with your purifiers.

This should prove to be an enjoyable Crowe list for you to get used to the game. Once you've done that, you'll be able to expand it, as a Crowe list at any points level will have at least 2 10-man purifier squads and a dreadnought.

Be sure to keep us updated on your modeling, painting, and daemon-crushing ("daemon-crushing" should be read as though Arnold Schwarzenegger is saying it) progress Wink

Re: Advice please?

Thanks again everyone. As I being buying and continue reading, I am wondering about Coteaz and some specifics on adding him to the list above. If I add Coteaz as a second HQ and keep him near a "shooty" warband and some other troop choices, would that work as I build up to a 1500 point army? Would I still get to keep the Purifiers as a regular troop choice with Crowe as an HQ as well? I'm reading and researching all I can, and I just want to make sure I'm understanding things correctly. I know I will also have a lot of room to play points wise when building to 1500, and Coteaz is one of the other HQ units I'm really interested in. Would I be better served with a Grand Master or maybe a Librarian instead of Coteaz as a second HQ with Crowe, with some Paladins, Strike Squads, or Terminators?

Thanks a lot everyone for your help and your patience. I'm really excited about this, and just want to make sure I'm understanding the game properly.

I would not advise including Coteaz in a Crowe-Purifier list. Purifiers are VERY shooty considering they get twice as many psycannons as normal GKSS, so you'll have plenty of shootiness in your army already. Crowe and Coteaz don't mesh well together because if you're taking Crowe then you need to take A LOT of purifiers, but if you're taking Coteaz then you need to take A LOT of henchmen. So they end up kind of fighting each other for the 6 troop slots.

I love Paladins for a bunch of reasons, so if I were to run a Crower-Purifier list, I would probably put Paladins in there at higher point games. This is because of how great Paladins are in close combat. What I would do for a Crowe-Purifier list at 2000 points, for example, is have 4-6 squads of 5- or 6-man Purifiers each with 2 psycannons and the rest halberds inside of razorbacks, 2 ven dreads w/ the 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo, and fill in any extra points with Paladins and a transport for the Paladins (one of the 3 Land Raiders or a Stormraven). Use the purifiers to get to objectives and provide general shootiness, and only assault with them if you have to. Get the Paladins into assault ASAP and support them with the transport that you selected. That's just what I would do though. If you want to run terminators instead or something else then please do. I just have a preference for Paladins because I think they are cool.

EDIT: As I think about this more, at 2000 points you would need more anti-vehicle. So I would also be sure to include a hammer or 2 on the Paladins, then maybe a few hammers in some of the Purifier squads as well. If I took a SR then I would give it the TLMM & TLLC.
