Grey Knights Color
Hail Brothers,
I'm very new to Warhammer 40K and the Grey Knights. I see that the principle colors for Grey Knights are Bolt Gun Metal with Mithiril and Chainmail Highlights. Additionally the the letters and insignias are Brass. And the Heraldry and accents are Red and White. With Black shadowing and such.
My question is can I replace the Red and White heraldry with other colors? Is this acceptable with the fluff or tournaments?
Can the helmets and shoulder pads be other colors beside Bolt gun Metal. E.G. Purifiers have White helmets. Can these be altered to my liking?
Glory to the Emperor!

Re: Grey Knights Color
Tournaments DO NOT care about color at all. Some will have painting scores, but you could paint them purple with pink polkadots and get full points if it was done well.
The only possible way to get in trouble with color is if you paint them exactly like another army so that people would be confused as to what that is.
Fluff wise it's technically just the models heraldry, so theres nothing to say it cant be other colors, those are just the inquisition colors and are traditional GK heraldry, especially as done by GW.
In short, when it comes to color scheme sky is the limit, everything is legal and acceptable (as long as your not intentionally trying to trick your opponent) and the cooler and more different it is, the more awesome comments you will get!

I think you should paint them however you like, Im sure some players are bored of every Grey Knights army being silver, a change of pace would be awesome!
As for things like Purifiers, you could (for example) have a black Grey Knights army, and all Purifiers have red helmets and shoulder pads. It stands out as different but doesn't confuse the opponent

Re: Grey Knights Color
The original Grey Knights illustrations from before they had a codex had them as black (inquisition colors). Theres speculation this was just a dark dar grey that looked black due to poor printing, but a lot of people believe it's cuz the inquisition is black. (Macharius on our forums does this)
There are examples in the old codex of red (again inquisition colors) Daemonhunters. Nygo on our forums does this.
A fair bit of people do brass or gold daemon hunters.
Grindgobble does Braveheart esque half red half blue scheme.
Just some inspiriations if you want to looks at some examples.

I for example plan to paint my Paladins gold and white, after all they're the chapter's best. And Mordrak termies, will be purple/blue, to enhance their ghostly nature. The sky is the limit.

Re: Grey Knights Color
i'm really conservative in that matter i'm afraid.
i like the sober colours of the GK ... dark silver or clear boltgun metal and only the colours of the inquisition : red, white and black (with gold to make understand the rarity of their gear).
i think it fits well to the monastic way of life of the GKs.
but in that area you can make lot of things : make the purifiers helmets in black, one arm or leg in black or red, parts of the helmets in red or black .... and so on ...

Re: Grey Knights Color
Personaly there your models and you will have to be the one who looks at them the most so pick set of colours that you like. I went for a metalic grey paint and stuck with the reds, whites, blacks and golds.. but the metalic paint makes them look diff to others as i havd a issue with grey knights painted silver lol.... thats just me tho.
Paint the models as you see fit. You payed for them

Re: Grey Knights Color
I appreciate the responses. After heavy consideration I've decided to stick with Boltgun Metal and use variant designs of Scab Red, Chaos Black, Unbleached Bone, and Dwarven Brass, with Shining Gold for my Terminators.
I've been thinking of painting some Paladins in brass.
And my Purifiers.....

Unbleached bone?
I'd say you have the purifiers in a darker colour.
They are constantly surrounded by flames so it makes sense.
Or do the standard white armour.
Either way, i think you should put flames on their bases so it's no question what they are.

I personally find Chainmail armour with Dwarf Bronze for the Shoulder Pad banding and inscriptions works really well.
I agree Paladins should be much more colourful.
Purifiers look cool cream colour......but need more flame motifs on them.

My army is boltgun with mithryl highlights, purifiers have dwarf bronze helmets gloves and toes, Paladins and hq's are mithryl with white highlights. Overall detail/accent scheme is blues with a smattering of red.

Re: Grey Knights Color
I still like the fluff for the armour brought about in the last edition of the Codex. Back then Grey Knight armour was unpainted to represent the fact that they aren't vain and are pure.
My armour is Chainmail with Mirthril highlights, and gold inscription. The only parts of my armour that aren't silver or gold are any bits of skulls or things like books that adorn the armour. To counter this I've used a heavily shaded red for ranged weapons, and the personalised shields are black and red, with a shaded white / grey for details. I'm making sure that each Grey Knight has a sword on their shield to represent that they are part of the same brotherhood (Brotherhood of the Sword ), whereas the Purifiers are all going to have flames on their shields, again in white, as they are not part of the same brotherhood.
But like everyone has already said, they are your models for you to do with what you will. I've seen some of the new Grey Knights painted black with a fire pattern coming from the bottom of the model that looks really good.

Re: Grey Knights Color
I played around last night with the Purifiers and painted there armor bolt metal. I then colored their shoulder pads skull white with scab red trim. The runes are colored scab red with a highly diluted amount of skull white to fill in the background crevices. The helmet I painted white but I'm note sure i like it. Overall, it look bold and simple!
