GW North American 40K Tournament Rd 1
Ended up playing against IG again for Round 1 of this tournament (Round 2 and 3 will be in June and July).
My opponent's list included:
1 command squad (w/ medic and other specialists)
2 infantry squads
2 veteran squads
2 sentinels
1 chimera
3 heavy weapons teams
1 valkyrie
2 leman russ w/ battlecannon
1 leman russ w/ TWL autocannon
Not sure how the units fell in w/ the FOC but he had a total of 1730 pts.
My list was list B from my other thread in sector command.
I'm not going into a lot of details because the game ended up being lopsided. It was obvious from my opponent's pre-game comments that he wasn't very experienced yet and moreover, that he had never faced grey knights before. He was very confident about the fact that he had a valkyrie and several heavy tanks. In fact, he was already joking about smelling a lot of burnt space marines
Anyway, the game was annihilation w/ spearhead deployment. Kill points and victory points are tallied. Extra points also for killing the enemy HQ. He won the roll and chose his table side as well as elected to go first.
As you could see, he used a standard gun line formation w/ the intent of flanking his valkyrie (w/ veteran squad embarked). I chose to spread my forces and maximize flanking, shrouding and range. Of course, the LR's will converge in the middle and unload my HQ squad as well as a GK squad w/ 'cinnies.
I ended up rolling a 6 to steal initiative and went first. I basically hugged the flanks making best use of cover while the LR's charged in the middle. He managed to immobilize 1 LR but when my HQ and the other GK squad got into his lines, it was pretty much a done deal. I was actually helping him out during the game since he tended to forget shooting w/ some units or moving some units, etc.
By turn 5, he had nothing left on the table. Final score: GK - 17 kp and 1730 vp, IG - 0 kp and 103 vp(half of 1 GK squad).
Unit/model of the game for me is definitely my GM. Even though he had a retinue, he always went at initiative 5 and he destroyed 2 leman russ tanks, 1 chimera, 1 sentinel and half of an infantry squad. Some of the scenes I can imagine were quite epic actually. His squad was standing right in front of the leman russ (w/ autocannon) and it unloaded everything it had on them (twl autocannon, lascannon and 2 hb)... and they shrugged everything off. On his turn, he used hammerhand and promptly ripped the tank apart
I was trying to go easy on my opponent but scoring is actually very important in this tournament since only the 3 highest score sheets will be submitted to GW HQ. So I didn't have much choice but to destroy everything I can. It was a good game although I still felt bad for him since he was still quite a new player.

Congratulations with your great victory! Although if he was more experienced he would probably have caused some trouble for your knights.
But the fact remains in a tournament that you're there to have fun but also to win.

Quite true Brother. Better deployment and tactics would have made the game more interesting for him. Although the fact of the matter is, his army's weapon set up is not quite built to deal w/ my list. Maybe if he had a vendetta vice a valkyrie and maybe if his sentinels had AT weapons instead of heavy flamers.

Thanks Brother. When are you going to post the batrep on your game vs. the iron warriors? Since we were playing simultaneously, I didn't get to see your game.

Happy you prevailed Brother Rivan.
i feel sorry for your opponent, but underestimate his adversary even more if it's an unknown army is a fatal error. It's a lesson your opponent needed to learn one way or another

hopefully noone got higher than us after we left, because we were the first 2 done while the rest were still playing. we played our games the fastest and we got their after they had been playing.

Well, I just talked to the store manager, and we're down to 3rd and 4th right now after everyone else played today. But the scores are very close so as long as we do good in the 2nd and 3rd round, we should still be up there

well.. im not too suprised, seems like everyone went for total destruction seeing how that was the pretty clear objective, but im sure that will change in the next 2 games, with anni/KP just being a starter, but im pretty sure the next one will be objective based.

Congrats to you both. Who sez we can't play with a broken dex? Hell, by the looks of it we don't bloody well even need a new dex.
Ummm...it would be kinda cool to have a new one though.

Thanks Brother NF & Nausaden. It was actually pretty cool listening to comments from observers...I heard bits and snatches of "dude, those are grey knights!" or "oh man, those IG are toast..."
Raven925: I concur...pretty sure next mission scenario is objective based w/ a few extra battle mission stuff thrown in

Hikaru said the list stays at 1750 throughout. He assumes it has to be the same list but GW HQ wasn't clear on it. I'll have him find out for us though
