For CC only. Who is best to take?
Been discussing this for seems like months with friend of mine.
Who is the best HQ to take for Challenge/CC purposes:
Draigo is good. he has a 3+ inv save, 2+ armour, high initiative, the most attacks of all HQs, and also highest toughness plus he's eternal warrior. But, his sword, even at Str 10, is still AP3. So against any terminator character, or 2+ save character he's at a disadvantage.
Mordrak has the advantage of a Str 10 AP2 daemonhammer, a good amount of attacks...BUT, he's only got a 5+ inv and he's at I1.
Stern......MOVING ON
Grand Master / Brother Captain.
Blind Grenades, Rad Grenades, Psychotroke Grenades, Mastercrafted Nemesis Force Sword, Empryean Brain Mines.........
The Master/Captain can take a lot of equipment with them and in combat this shows (if the character is charging).
Grey Knight Librarian.
Either take a NWS, or keep the sword to have a 4+ inv.
Initiative 10 due to Quicksilver, Mastery Level 3, Might of Titan and Dark Ex/Hammerhand = a Str 6/7 Nemesis Weapon striking first and able to take on daemons easily enough.
Brotherhood Champion
not many attacks, but can tarpit an enemy unit easily.
Crowe
same, but no power weapon! rending is nice though
Inquisitor Coteaz.
Str 7 Daemonhammer. Artificer Armour, NO INV!!
On a side not I'd TOTALLY FORGOTTEN COTEAZ HAS SANCTUARY!!! OMG!
Inquisitor Kamarazov...
Monstrous Creature! RELENTLESS. Master-Crafted Power Sword....4 wounds...T5 S5!
Inquisitor Valeria
Really? Anyone EVER taken her as an HQ?
Inquisitor (Malleus)
Power Armour, Prescience, Daemonblade.
+1 attack for 2 CCWs?
Inquisitor (Hereticus)
Ummmmm pass
Inquisitor (Xenos)
Psychotroke and Rad Grenades,
Scythian Venom Talon
Prescience.
+1 Attack for 2 CCWs?
who would you say is best? or what equipment would you put on a character to make them the best?

It depends on who they're fighting, otherwise you just end up with a circular argument. Draigo probably works out fairly well as an all rounder in a challenge because he has eternal warrior. On the other hand, the champion can just tie up the more expensive Draigo and has a good chance of taking him down as well even if Draigo does win the fight.

well a long and protracted argument where I was espousing Abaddon the Despoiler as the ultimate CC badass came down to either Draigo (who has problem of having AP3 sword) or Bro Champion.

Bro champion is good but not when alone. The best he can do in CC is reroll failed saves, which deoes nothing to defeat the oposing hero. I would go with Draigo, although Abaddon will kick his ass any day.
Oh, and Mordrak has 4++ beacuse of his Iron Halo, but he's not in CC either.

Bro Champ, while he will not win the arguement, he will have the last word against Abaddon.
But I never take him as he cannot do anythnig else in the army.
Grand master is the normal choice with a bag of grenades.
But even then I dont take him anymore as I will normaly be takeing coteaz and an inquisitor.
Other armies have combat beasts, not us. We are more a Swiss army knife

Re: For CC only. Who is best to take?
That's pretty much how I see it. Grey Knights are not better than some other armies' close combat units and they can't outshoot some armies' support units. What they can do is shoot the assault units and assault the support units. We are more a Swiss army knife
If an enemy character outclasses mine in hand-to-hand, I need to make sure they never end up in hand-to-hand. hypothetically.
The way I see it, if your Abaddon is fighting another Abaddon, they have a 1-in-2 chance of winning. With the Brotherhood Champion, if he loses he has a higher than 1-in-2 chance of taking Abaddon with him. Just about. This is fairly useful on a battlefield: the chaos player will most probably run his expensive kick-ass general away from the champion rather than risk being sucker punched back into the abyss.

yes that's how me and my friend saw it. The only character in the GK codex who can stand against Eternal Warriors and have a good chance is the Bro Champion (Or Crowe cause of his rending attacks)
