in some five years GW and others miniature factories will start to have piracy problems with these printers!

Re: 3D printing getting crazy
the same way people scan codex and put on the internet, some autocad fanatic will start make rhinos, land raiders and the like to put on the net and see the world burn!

Actually you can purchase forgeworld and GW products from third party manufactures. People have been able to replicate the GW casts. The only real difference is the quality of plastic.

Re: 3D printing getting crazy
even though i didnt won the 3d printer from my ex work i have some experience with it.
currently you have to spend around 750€ for a good printer. good plastic is around 10€ per pound. you can print around 15-20 infantry (space marine) models for it.
give it a year or wait for christmas when such stuff gets price reduced and go mad.
its illegal to trade such stuff but keeping it for yourself.. i dont see a problem there... and well GW are pirates to begin with... the print for a codex including storage price costs 7.30€. and they sell em for 40€.
scanning is simple.. you could literally put a whole vehicle/model and let the 3d printer do the rest.
a model that has been printed is almost identical. only the plastic is a tick heavier. wich does not stand out if the model is painted, on the base and finished.
GW staff will have no clue to see the differences of models on the tables if they are painted. heck.. even primed is enough to tell no difference.
gw and other minature makers will have to use some sort of new system for the models to distinguish their models from printed ones. maybe hidden sensory chips inside a bit

Re: 3D printing getting crazy
lol very true Aubec :p
But I agree with what everyone is saying, the 3D printers open up a whole new can of worms that will really do some damage to GW, and other miniature gaming companies profit margins if this "black market" trade can take off, and I don't know if there is really anything these companies can do to prevent it from happening, putting in chips to identify their products will lead to 2 things in my opinion, 1. the impression they are trying to police the hobby which to some people can restrict an individuals freedoms. 2. The other is another price increase of all their products which, at some point lead to people saying enough is enough im not paying X number dollars for a landraider or whatever and people will turn to the 3rd part producers for the same product but at half the price. GW needs to handle this situation very carefully because it can backfire on them.
Personally, I think the only real solution is to lower prices. By lowering prices to compete with these replicas, GW should be able to literally force the third party manufacturers into a situation where they cannot make a profit on their copies and thus make them go out of business. This has consequences in the short term, but in the long run will help GW. But that's just my opinion. I dont want to dive any deep into the politics of GW, it can just be to frustrating.

Re: 3D printing getting crazy
I never saw any kind of business lower their prices without the government being involved, so I really doubt GW will low the price!
knowing the commom GW employee, many not even know that there is home made 3d printers around the world!
they probably will make another crazy embargo, so everyone in the world will only buy gw if they are in fisical shops in full moon nights!

lol well we can always hope GW will lower their prices but I would have to agree it is extremely unlikely that they actual will lol.

Re: 3D printing getting crazy
the shipping is not that expensive!
the realm problem here on Brazil is the 100% tax on toy imports and the two months it´s takes to delivery!
we always must try to find another way to avoid this abuse!
just wonder how much cost to bring a videogame launch!
it´s a herculean job play warhammer on south america!
but it could be worse, I can´t even wonder how it is on Africa!
