a 1750 point tourney with my friends

Post by Souba on Thu Jul 28, 2011 9:05 pm

greeting fellow brothers. on the upcomming weekend i am going on a little tournament that has been started by my friends. we are 16 players and will be playing in two groups each 8 man. each attendant in a group will battle each other, the best of the group will fight for the victory against the best of the other group. making a total of 7/8 games at 1750 points. we will be playing from friday evening until sunday evening with some other activites between, like soccer and basketball and of course, drinking sessions. its gonna be a great weekend Very Happy

my friends are: 2 space wolve players. 2 tyranid players, 2 guard players, 1 sister player, 1 dark angel player, 3 ork players 1 blood angel player, 1 vanilla marine player (vulcan list). the other 3 i dont know sadly.

as i will be fielding my GK i will only be playing my assembled models as my other ones arent assembled due to make the painting better. i thought i post my list here to tell you guys how i want to try this tactic i am thinking off. with battle reports in the upcomming start of the week

HQ:

grandmaster Ignis. mc sword, rad/psychostroke grenades, incinerator. digital weapons, 3 servo skulls, Brainmines - 245 points
Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Raziel Delryn. Psyker upgrade w/ psychic communion, plasma siphon, power armor, conversion beamer, 3 servo skulls. 127 points

Elite
Henchman warband: 1 mm servitor. 2 plasma cannon servitor, 2 jokaero, 1 mystic 6 warrior acolyts with boltung. razorback with sync plasma cannon + lascannon -240 points

Troops:

5x Terminators: 1 sword, 1 hammer, 2 halberds 1 psycannon. justicar thawn. 300 points

10x Strike Squad: 2 psycannons justicar with mastercrafted hammer. razorback with sync plasmacannon + lascannon - 315 points

Fast Attack

Stormraven: sync multimelta, sync plasmacannon, hurricane bolters, teleport homer, searchlight - 251 points

Heavy Support
2x psyrifle dreads with additional searchlights. -136 points each.
(have to thank a friend for borrowing me one)

total : 1750 points

tactica:

the gm will stick to the terminators and will be using the stormraven. as i have a low body count. the strike squad will be kept in reserve to deepstrike into in most of the games. thats why i have taken the teleport homer on the stormraven and the mystic in the henchman squad to adjust the deepstrike to support either the front or the back backed up with 2x psychic communion i get them in on turn 2 on a 2+. those 6 servo skulls are there to support the blast marker shooting and to be able to use a surprise move with the GKSS if needed. will be using scoring dreads most of the time i think
the stormraven will advance towards the biggest threat my list will have to face : either strong shooters or elite assaulters. if no real threat is available so far (reserves) he will work as mobile firebase, supporting the rest of my shooting.
the razorback of my strike squad and the one of the henchmen warband will stick close to the warband. blocking line of sight and granting additional fire support, hopefully getting some cover themselves somewhere. the warband will be kept in cover and will shoot as much as possible. what the dreads do i guess everybody already knows so no explaining in that.

I added thawn for one tactic i always use if i charge into elite assault units of my enemy. every first wound at any initiative gets allocated to him in hope of him dying. as fights against elite units most of the time can take 2 turns he leaves the combat and gets placed as close as possible towards his marker. if the combat still goes on. he can be pretty "missplaced" granting him some free movement. i had multiple times when i was able to bring him right into the next combat against shooters mostly and surviving my assault phase, meaning the enemy has to skip movement and shooting with his squad.

the grandmaster got brainmines and the inquisitor got the siphon only for one reason : i had 20 points left and didnt know where to go. i use them on the GM against powerfist users and the siphon is just there because... yeah its there, didnt know where to spend my points.

wish me luck brothers jocolor

Good luck!

You do indeed have a very low bodycount so good luck getting the troops all the way through the battle!

I would love to see this list in action though (if I may seeing as my own lists get heavily criticised) can I give some advice on each squad. Take it if you want to:

Grandmaster: He's at 245 points. Change him to Draigo for an extra 30 and your terminators now become Paladins. Keep reading!

Xenos Inquisitor: Give him power armour, rad & psychotroke and scythian venom talon plus 3 servo skulls and put him with your Strike Squad. You now have a strike squad that is much more effective in CC...all for 87 points

Henchmen: Too big IMO. If you want to shoot a lot but be protected take:
x 2 Jokaero, x 3 Plasma Cannon Servitors, Chimaera w/ Heavy Flamer & Multilaser = 185. Saved yourself 55 points and got yourself a transport that can keep your henchmen firing and protected.

Terminator Squad: A single terminator squad costing 300 points......what's the point? They're single wound, can die to mass bolters, have no Feel No Pain and not enough bodies to soak up firepower...
If you're going to take terminators then take Paladin terminators! For the nearly the same points (plus the points saved from the henchmen and Inquisitor you can get -
5 Paladins w/ Psycannon and incinerator, brotherhood banner, apothecary and whatever freeemesis weapons you want = 400
Don't take them in a stormraven. Deepstrike them close to the enemy and watch as they rampage through everything with your grandmaster.

Strike Squad: I'd put these in the stormraven with the inquisitor and have them fly across the board. Deepstriking just makes the storm raven a target, whereas moving flat out means a) in cc enemy has to score a 6 to hit. b) you get a 4+ cover save due to flying so fast against shooting.
Give them halberds and daemonhammer and psycannons and psyammo = 285 points

Stormraven: I'd take the assault cannon, everything else looks fine..

Dreadnoughts:

Why are you taking searchlights? If it's Dawn of War deployment then shucks, but otherwise it's 2 points normally wasted IMO..

Let's just check haven't gone mad on points;

Draigo - 275
Inquisitor - 84 (only 2 servo skulls)
Henchmen - 185
Paladins - 400
Strike Squad - 285
Stormraven - 250 (NO SEARCHLIGHT)
Dreadnoughts - 270

1749

If you like the look of it take it. otherwise I wish you luck with your game using your list and hope to read how it goes!

Good luck Brother Souba! Why not spend the last 20 points on psybolt ammo or something like that? Just seems that the plasma siphon is a bit of a throwaway.

I'm also very interested in how that Thawn strategy works out for you, so be sure to post some battle reports Wink

You have our support! May your tactics be superior, and may the Emperor guide the dice into your favor!

hehe thought you would give me the hardest critique, here are some answers:

Draigo: lack of psychostroke/rad grenades, read up the inquisitor for more inview.

inquisitor : if i make him a melee one, the servitors will have a 50% chance of not working, what makes it worse is that the whole squad cant shoot. having a squad work only every 2nd turn (if at all) is not worth its points, at all.

Henchmen: as said by the inquisitor, half of the time this squad wont shoot at all. if the chimera gets blown up. those guys will die, quickly. additionaly those "cheap" additional wounds protect the squad more than the chimera can. if i put them in cover those 6-7 additional wounds last long on top of beeing able to shoot themselves if an enemy gets too far. the chimera got good anti infantry but lacks good anti tank. i cant only rely on 2 dreads if the place is crowded with missle launchers.

Strike squad, see inquisitor. also, paying 30 points for 1 attack models is not worth it. especially if its one of your onlly scoring units. in scoring games those points can become wasted quick.

Terminators, i wont play paladins because of the GM/inquisitor. ontop of that, you cant know what im facing because i didnt told it so far. both of those space wolves play 3x long fangs all full kitted out with rocket launchers will shoot down deepstriking paladins quick, sure you can allocate wounds to draigo but you cant allocate all to them. also : exorcists. if i am facing sisters those will rape paladins without me ever getting close enough to do anything.

i understand paladins, seriously but only one 5 man squad of them screams too much of "hey just shoot at me with all your ap2-1 double strength weapons" wich i will be facing a lot if i alone count in : 2 guard, 5 space marine variants, 1 sister and 3 orks. thats more than the half of the players in the game. also take a note that feel no pain does not work against double strength/toughness as well as against ap 2 or below weapons. so it only works against the smallest of arms fire

stormraven, i wont deepstrike him in any game, the fire support is much more needed as well as bringing my GM + termies in CC fast enough.

Dreads: searchlights on them aswell as the stormraven because of left over points. if i am fighting dawn of war. then i will be sure to have a bigger chance of blowing up a enemy vehicle at turn 1

problem with your lists :
4 TL S8 autocannon shots.
1 tl melta + 1 tl assault cannon.
3 psycannons in total
2 mm/lascannons 3 plasma cannons that only work 50% of the time.

if i would play this list i would have trouble if i will face any av of 13+. those few AT can be shot down quiet quick rendering myself unable to kill anything of that while he will shoot as much as possible at me. also horde armys will have a field day with the only explosive weapon beeing 3 plasma cannons that only shoot every 2nd turn.

i will however switch the plasma siphon + the brainmines for psybolt ammonition. thanks for those ideas both of you, totally forgot those psybolts

hmmmmm might I suggest instead of taking one 10 man squad of strike squad you take 2 squads and two razorbacks? target saturation and more anti-tank if you can find the points

I wouldn't split the 10-man squad. He's already got a stormraven, 2 razorbacks, and 2 psyriflemen, so adding a razorback wouldn't add enough to justify effectively weakening the squad (as a 5-man GKSS is pretty easy to take out).

Excluding Thawn (again, I'm curious, but always dubious about the 75 points sink) and the whole psybolt ammo thing that's already been addressed, I think the list is just fine.

i thought about that but i think i will combat squad them if needed instead. i will be having the same benefits (except -1ld on one squad) as before and wont be losing the psybolts/having them cheaper. also i cant fit a 3rd razorback into sadly.
