500 pt DH vs. Orks

Post by Ceasarian on Fri Jun 19, 2009 7:58 pm

One of the first games of the summer break that I had played at the local gaming store. It was my DH army against an old friend of mine who was using the orks that I had painted from the Battle for Black Reach.
Here are the lists:
DH list:
HQ
Brother-Captain
GK terminators (3x), one with a psycannon
Troops
PaGK (6x) with one Justicar with a targeter
ST's (5x) two with Plasma guns
-DH Player Strategy-
I figured that the ork player was going to want to close as fast as possible to get stuck into close combat, where the Nobz and warboss would tear my Gk's apart. I didn't figure that the boyz would be that big of an issue if I could limit their numbers a bit, as my better Int, and Str 6 attacks could do their dirty work. I would target the nobz if I could, or at least try to wipe out their meat sheild, and once the deffkoptas came on, I would target them as well (their twinlinked str 8 ap 3 rokkits can do some dmg).
Orks List:
HQ
Warboss with Power Claw, and Stikkbombz.
Troops
Nobz Mob (5x Nobz), with Slugga's, Choppa's, and a Waagh! Banner, and a 'eavy armor.
Boyz Mob (19x Boyz), with one upgraded Nobz with a Boss Pole. Two of the boyz have big shoota's.
Fast Attack
3x Deffkopta's with twin linked Rokkit Launcha's
-Ork Player Strategy- To close with the DH line as fast as possible, using the Ork Boyz as meat sheilds to give the Nobz a 4+ cover save. Close with the softer PaGK first, then move to take out the rest of the army with the Nobz and the warboss in the squad, abusing the power claw as much as possible. Hopefully the kopta's will come in on turn two to turn three, and I can lay down some nasty fire power/ tie up some of the shooty units for a turn or two until I can take them out with my close combat weapons. If the DH are wiped off the board, then they can't control any objectives, and well it's a orky win.

Turn 0- Game Set up
The board setup at the store. The orks were deployed by the ork shanty building on one side of the board, and the Deamon Hunters on the other side, along the rock face, and along the fortifications in the center.
We were playing a capture and control game with three objective- the Orky Wall, a stack of ork weapons, and the bridge in the center- the only way to cross the river in the center. The idea to play the board length wise was a HUGE help to me as he couldn’t get into close combat with me on turn one. The ork player deployed the koptas in reserve, and put everything else by the shanty town, and bunched the orks together in one mob. I moved all of my units along the ridge line, with the more squishy ST’s in the center within the center fortifications.

Turn 1
The Deffkoptas stay in reserve, and the orks begin their march foward- including a ROLL OF SIX for the run move, forcing that ork horde even closer to the DH lines.
The DH, firmly dug into the hillside, and began the shooting phase, killing 6 boyz, and of course- rolling a one for the plasma gun. Killing one of Storm Troopers outright- but they passed their morale check, allowing me to keep the scoring unit still on the board.

Turn 2
The orks laughing as I only managed to kill six the previous turn begin their amazingly fast charge foward towards the DH position. ROLLING ANOTHER 6 for the run. The ork player evily was placing his nobz and warboss behind the boyz- taking advantage of the 4+ Cover save- negating the remaining plasma gun. He rolled to see if the Deffkopta's get in- and...(drum roll)......1- they weren't coming in.
Once again, I used the DH firing position and this time managed to wipe out a TON of the boyz, leaving only a fraction of their number on the board. NOT to mention the leaving the Nobz open, wounding one (their upgraded 4+ armor saves made it a little harder to knock out).

Turn 3
The shooting phase begins anew as the Boyz and the Nobz charged up again, but not making it all to far. The Boyz were fully wiped out and the Nobz took three wounds, Sooooo two died (as they had one wound from the previous turn).
The Grey Knights also finally moved, with the PAGKs coming off the high ground- moving towards Objective C. The other Plasma gun armed ST opens up, and YES- rolls a one, killing himself as well. The squad then passes their morale check, and stays in the game, but the amazing marksmanship of the two plasma guns left me rather shaken.

Turn 4
With their meat sheild gone, the Ork Nobz and warboss charge at the PAGK. The PAGK do a good job of holding their ground, killing all of the Nobz- but one with one wound. However, four of the PAGK were killed by the rampaging warboss. (leaving three of them left)
The terminator Gk's then moved in, and charged the combat in my turn, killing the remaining nobz, and putting the warboss down to one wound. The warboss in return kills two of the terminators, and then fails his moral check- falling back.

Turn 5
The Deffkoptas- COME ON TO THE BOARD (woot!). and make their presence known as they blow apart one of the ST's- who then proceed to run off the board, and the warboss having one wound left begins to fall back more (attempting to deny me the victory pts).
I moved my PAGKs closer to the objective, just to make sure that I would claim it by the close of the game. The terminators proceed to blow apart two of the koptas, with the third one falling back attempting to cover the war boss, keeping him from being insta-killed by my scanning (AP4). .

Turn 6
We rolled to see if there was another turn, and by rolling for another turn I mean that the ork player rolled a 6.
The warboss moves behind the defkopta, having a 4+ cover save. However, the terminators blow apart the remaining deffkopta- and the three PAGK open up on the Warboss, killing him as well. The orks were effectively wiped off the game board, and I held the ork weapon stash, and the termies were contesting the bridge or center objective.
A solid win for the GK’s.

GK player after thoughts- A well played game, I like to think. The layout of the board, including the impassable terrain, and the one bridge REALLY helped me out, as well as the inability for the koptas to come in at the desired time. I don’t there was anything that I did wrong, except for maybe moving the GK’s towards the approaching orks, as I may of gotten another round of shooting on the orks keeping my losses down even more.
Ork player after thoughts- The game was well fought, and I did everything that I could do, pulling all sorts of tricks out to try to keep the Nobz and war boss alive long enough. The biggest issue wasn’t the terrain, but the deffkopta’s failing to come on early within the game. This would of allowed me to put some more fire on, or at least tie up one of his units, allowing me to get even more orks into close combat, maybe changing the entire outcome of the game. The other issue with the game was the way the ork list was created. The Battle for Black Reach, while a great deal for getting started just doesn’t have a lot of orks, or at least for the job with killing GK’s.

I hope that you all enjoyed this battle report, I hope that the pictures work at least. Over the past week I painted the Space Marine army at 500 pts from the Black reach set, but instead of a dread I have a land speeder with typhoon missile launchers. As well as a Tau list with a hammer head. I’ll hopefully be playing games at 500pts against these other two lists at some pt, against the individual whom played the Orks in this match (as he demands a rematch). I’ll be sure to post any pictures from these battle reports as they come in- as well as hopefully moving up to 1k, and then to 1500 pts (as I have the models in my DH army for this- just have to paint ugh…lol).

First off, welcome to the forum. Very nice batrep. Your tactics vs. Orks were spot on. Shoot them to hell as much as possible before close combat and always try to be the one charging. I agree that the board and set-up played right into your hands and it was nice to see the GK win. Shame about the bad roll rolls on the plasma guns but I don't think you have to roll morale checks if your own guy gets toasted by it. That's one awesome-looking board you guys played on.

Yea we were really lucky, are local game shop has some amazing individual whom can craft such great things.
It was a small game board, which is why we decided to play it the long way (it worked out to be a little wider than the regular table size).
I'm currently finishing up my 1500 list, I just have one raider to clean up, another to fully finish up (ugh...), and one PAGK (woot). I do have a question concerning how the game will be played however...I had the 4th edition FAQ which stated that the our Land Raiders were capable of firing the weapons at different models (ie two lascannons at that tank resting in range, and the heavy bolter at some infantry). I have the 5th ed FAQ- but it doesn't say anything about the BS 4 with the machine spirit. I am not remembering this properly? Can anyone post the link to the 4th ed FAQ for me? I would help out greatly lol.

I'll be working around the clock with this darn summer cold to get these models done, so more Battle reports can come. I hope you all enjoyed the first Battle report- but do any of you have any suggestions with such reports?

Welcome, and absolutely awesome batrep!
Your opponent didn't have that many orks, but realistically you also didn't have that many models either, especially have a few GKT removes double the number of PAGK's, and at low points its always a gamble!

You'll notice alot of us GK purists here who don't use IST's, although they are used very effectively by other members of our forum!

Nice win and nice batrep Caesarian. To answer your questions, the 5th ed rules removed the BS2 verbage from POTMS so it fires at regular BS now. And it also allows the POTMS to fire one weapon at a different unit. So, yes, a LR sitting and not moving, can fire 2 LC at a tank and the POTMS can fire the HB at infantry. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the feedback, and thank you Rivan for the discussion on the Land Raider rule. I spoke with the individual whom we were not in agreement over the rule, and I re-read the one part in the FAQ which states that the weapons are fired with the "normal rules" for firing, and with what you stated above- he agreed that the GK land raider can preform such shanagins (we were in disagreement during a test game at 1500 about the BS of 4- So I used the BS of 2, which was fine since I rolled nothing but 5's and 6's anyway =D ).
I recently finished with the first Land Raider, and have started on the next two PAGK's. I hope to have these two models, and the final raider done in about two to two and a half weeks. When I manage to get some free time I'll post an army list with pics on the site (for my 1000, and 1500 lists) for additional feedback.
It will be a few more days before I'll get a chance to play another game (at least Monday), so I'm hoping to have a battle report posted at some pt. next week with GK's either facing Raven Guard Space Marines, or Tau- or maybe even the orks again. (that's the good thing about having several small 500pt armies lol).
Is there anyway to resize the images, if you all feel they are currently to big? Or just leave them as is?
Thank you again for your feedback, and have a great evening.

Great work with the pictures Brother Ceasrian; gotta love Black Reach. If all the models for the game were not so stupidly overpriced, it wouldn't seem as much of a goldmine, but oh well.

Very effective whittling down the Orks with your fine shooting. A real shame about the bloke with the plasma pistol; it's hard to believe he would fail said shooting TWICE. I only wish that your GKT would have cut down that Warboss personally....

Anyway, very nice map too. I love the single bridge.
