Battle Report

Grey Knights vs Space Marines
Battle of the Three Cathedrals

During the course of a lazy afternoon my buddy Frans and I played 3 games at 1000 points, so that he could try out different lists and army builds with his Space Marines, while I as a newbie to 40K blooded my own list further.

The first 2 games ended quickly with draw and then a win in my favour. However they were not quite satisfying as we never got to real grips with one another and the lists were to an extent unproven.

Game three was the far more interesting and tense. Frans tried out a 3rd list and we decided to play Seize the Ground as the first game had been Capture and Control and the second was Annihilate.

Four objective markers were placed on the board, one in a ruined Bell Tower with 1 story, another in the ruined corner piece of a 2 story building which was near a forest. Two more objectives straddled the Cathedral ruins in the centre and right of the centre. This area was where the fight would be fought.

Other terrain pieces of note were the Cathedral ruin to the south and a ruined bunker wall blocking LOS to the North.

We rolled randomly for deployment and got Pitched Battle.

Battle REport GK vs SM 1000pts GKvsSMdeployment

The Space Marines deployed first claiming one objective straight away in the Bell Tower. He placed a tactical squad in the building and a Devastator squad on the top level with a commanding view of the battle field.

The Captain and his retinue deployed next to the Bell Tower building.

The 2nd Tactical squad split up with the special weapons team deploying behind the bunker wall out of LOS ready to move up to the top of the wall, while the other half deployed in the Rhino ready to dash in to the centre objective. A Predator and Dreadnaught deployed behind the wall taking advantage of LOS blockage.

I took an obvious deployment position with my first unit of Grey Knights positioning them behind the 2 story building to move them up to that objective. My Brother Captain HQ would provide supporting and flanking fire on their left. Knowing that the Lascannon on my Dreadnaught would be the only weapon able to reliably take on his armour, I needed him in a safe position and ready to move into a firing line. Nothing really blocked line of sight for me and I would have to rely on a 4+ cover from the buildings.

My 2nd Squad of Grey Knights was to make a dash for the centre objective so I put them behind a ruined tower. I intended for my Terminators to neutralise the rocket launching devastator squad in the Bell Tower and then counter attack a target of opportunity.

Battle REport GK vs SM 1000pts GKvsSMmoves

With the opening turns what followed was some cat and mouse manoeuvres on the left flank.
The Space Marine Dreadnaught and Predator sneaked around the left of the building to duel it out with my Dreadnaught. In my turn the Brother Captain moved around the edge of the building flanking the Space Marine armour and adding to the fire fight while my Dreadnaught moved up for a clearer line of fine between the buildings but also leaving it exposed. The four units jostled for better firing lines and traded vicious shots over two turns, failed wounding rolls and cover saves adding to the growing tension.

Much to my relief it was the Space Marines who came off second best, both walker and tank had to retreat behind cover with shaken crews from penetrating hits from my Dreadnaught and glancing hits from my Brother Captain. The Predator found better employment paying attention to the middle of the field where he could concentrate on the Grey Knight Terminators rather then risk the vengeful dreadnaughts Lascannon.

The Grey Knights on the left flank moved into the building to take control of an objective while the others left their cover to move into the open making a dash for the centre objective. If Grey knights could control this one I could force a draw if I couldn’t shoot him off any others. Between my two Grey Knight units I shot away most of the unit supplying cross fire from the bunker wall in the Space Marine deployment zone. I concentrated on them as the melta gun posed a threat, preventing my Dreadnaught from moving further midfield.

The Rhino moved right up to the centre claiming the centre objective and disembarking the Space Marines. The Rhino provided cover for it’s troops from my Brother Captain and added to the death of my 2nd Grey Knight squad before my Brother Captain blew its Heavy Bolter off.
My Grey Knights sprinted across the open but was blown to bits with some great Krak rocket shots from the Bell Tower and sustained bolter fire mixed in with a generous quantity of failed armour saves.

A side note on the Rocket shots, this particular shot was over 40” and I thought that Shrouding would give me a reasonable chance of marching up unmolested, however my opponent consistently rolled well over 30” for Shrouding. In fact he never failed to spot any of my troops even at extreme ranges! He made up for it though by rolling low for armour saves! 

The Space Marines were now on their way to controlling 3 objectives. Although I had whittled down the Rhino’s crew, the remnants from the Bunker ruin were making their way to the centre objective.

On the right flank of the board the Space Marine HQ had moved into a commanding position in the courtyard of the East Cathedral, splitting the two objectives. The Tactical squad in the Bell Tower had split and was sending a combat squad to claim the right most objective.

The Grey Knight Terminators had failed to dislodge the Devastators quickly enough, killing only the sergeant and one other over 4 turns. So now they were moved out of their maximum range to clear an objective or two and counter attack, but it was too little too late. The Space Marine HQ got to them first and as the assaulting marines poured bolter fire into them, backed up by the combat squad moving up from the Bell Tower, the terminators 2+ saves were truly tested, failing only once.

Four Terminators faced the HQ’s charge and the resultant fight was vicious as 2 more Terminators fell to the power weapon of the Captain going first on initiative.

The Emperors Champion managed to eek out another kill but in return the Terminators dished out 6 wounds!
Thanks to the Apothecary, a “Feel no Pain” saving role was made and saved 3 of the wounds. (Rule query! Power weapons ignore the ‘Feel no Pain’ rule – Terminators Nemesis Force weapons count as Power Weapons)

Even though the rule had accidentally been played wrong it would not have had an influence on the outcome of the game.

Anyway, the combat was drawn and only my Brother Captain remained out of the Terminators to face the Champion, Apothecary and Captain, so the game ended spectacularly as the Brother Captain used his psychic ability to cast ‘Holocaust’ into the combat.

In spectacular fashion the combatants were incinerated in a holy blast of energy. Unfortunately his vengeance was too great as the Brother Captain too was consumed by his own power. At least I can claim that by killing himself he had prevented the heretics from looting his sacred terminator armour!

Result, a good win to the Space Marines (thrice damned heretics!) and a good reason for a grudge match!

Great job on the BR visuals!!!
If you have time, you should post a tutorial on how to do BRs like that.

Sounds like a good battle!!! Grudges always make you play better next time!!! Razz

Revenge is a dish best served cold. On Titan it's very, very cold so hopefully your SM opponent will be back for a second helping. Awesome batrep. Visuals sure do turn a batrep up a notch or three.

Thanks Snowfire, My apologies I realised my mistake after posting it! Embarassed (Self flaggelation on the cards)

@ Dark Bjoern, actually I used Auto realm, and customised some of the objects. It's handy but not the most user friendly software.

Thanks Constantine, prehaps I will. There are many ways to do a 'batrep' and I just like taking a cue from all the diagrammes of ancient/historical battles.

Was those Space Marines Black Templars or an army themed as Black Templars as they are the only one able to get Emperor's Champion.
And was that transport Razorback or rhino as your Space Marine army list states that it is Razorback, but the BatRep says it is a rhino, so which one is it?
And no Space Marines of Black Templars(or a Black Templar themed Space Marines) are heretics as the have never been and never will be.

Sounds like you had some bad luck with the shrouding there, but its awesome to hear you had such a good time playing the games!

Thats an awesome batrep infact, one of the best I've seen in a while, and made a great read! Feel free to post any more you have in the future because you really manage to capture the game in your description without being overly long winded (very rare) Razz

Also how did you feel about the incinerators in your PAGK squads, worthwhile?
