terrain placement...

Post by Thraxdown on Wed Feb 12, 2014 7:13 pm

I'm always trying to be a better general, one more deserving of the Grey Knights I field. What kind of tips can you guys give me for terrain placement and setup? I usually just throw terrain on the table and proclaim it good enough, but perhaps better placement could yield better results.

Admitting that there is a problem is the first step Brother!  Razz

You are the one that can best answer your own question. After you have thrown the terrain down and are playing do you ever find yourself wishing the terrain was somewhere else? Why?

Do you need cover to fire from on your side of the board, do you need cover for Mordrak to run to after he deep strikes, etc… The answer to your question is very subjective, so think about your play style and go from there.

Me personally? Terrain is my friend. When my friends and I play a game, we usually ask the shop manager or someone else present to place the terrain randomly so it's completely impartial.

After that I study each side of the board while we roll for who gets what deployment zone. I pick out which terrain offers my troops the best cover while keeping them in range for most of the battlefield.

Something to watch out for is terrain blocking YOUR line of sight as well as you opponent's line of sight. That alone can make and break your game all at once.

Aegis defense lines are also worth their weight in gold in my humble opinion.

I try to organise a table so it makes sense from a background point of view. Having individual ruins all over the place is unlikely: having clusters of buildings or ruins looks better and can create interesting little zones of urban fighting while not closing off the entire table. Roads should connect places of work or habitation, that sort of thing. Sometimes negotiation is needed but most people I've played share an appreciation for a board that looks like a place that could exist rather than scatter terrain put all over the place in the name of 'balance.'
