This is the background for the first space marine army I ever created. And it's something I keep coming back to even when I have my Grey Knights now.

Please note the fluff for the Second Legion is completely my own imaginings and any ideas others have about the two missing legions are also completely valid.
Also the name of the Primarch is pretty unsurprising since it's my fluff..

Legion Name: Emperor's Knights (II)

Primarch: Corennus

Strength: 19 chapters of 15500 marines each. 1 Chapter of 5500

20th (Knights Resolute. Later the Praetorians) 15500

Background:

Much has been made of the two lost legions. Well of the 11th I cannot speak, for I am bound by oaths too fell to mention to utter a single word of that unfortunate son's fate. But of the Second Legion I may tell you, for long overdue is its story.
It begins, as with all the others surrounding the great Legions, with the Primarch's coming.
The Primarch of the Second Legion, spirited away by Chaos along with his brothers, came to rest on the Knight World of Denev. There he was taken in by one of the many feuding Knight Houses. The House of Jarlen, one of the smaller but more honourable houses of that world.
From his first steps the Primarch was tutored in all manners of warfare, and also deportment. Not for him the stuffy classroom with reams of letters and histories to learn, that would come later.
No, for him his lessons were learned from the saddle. And behind a sword.
From the age of three he could name all manners of armour and armament. From the age of five he could wield the greatest of his father's weapons with effort. And by ten he was inducted into his father's Knight Brotherhood.
From there Corennus grew, both in stature and in knowledge as his studies turned more to the history of his world and greater wisdom as philosophy, psychology, and every bit of lore and learning that could be bought were included in his days away from martial affairs.
Soon the other Knight Houses, growing fearful of the impetuous and massive youth, brought war on the House of Jarlen. Corennus defended his land alongside his father, showing skill and mastery of tactics beyond his young years. But alas, the fight was too great, and Jarlen was killed even at the gates of his castle.
This event brought out the most surprising aspect of the young Primarch. Seeing his father split through with a massive bolt unleashed an inner torrent of psychic power. With a scream that shook the heavens the opposing armies were lashed with waves of telekinetic fury. Everything in the Primarch's path, friend and foe, were blasted from their feet. War machines, as heavy as thirty men, were toppled like sticks.
From this onslaught the defenders of House Jarlen took fresh heart, and with the young teenage Primarch leading them, smashed into the enemy lines like a raging tide. The day was won finally, after much bloodletting.
But for the young Primarch a dread realisation had come to him from this day. He would never know peace until all the other Knight Houses could live together.
So began a campaign echoed by many other of his brothers in later years. One Knight House fell to Corennus after another. His control over his power started to grow slowly until he was able to shake the foundations of an entire city once after it refused to surrender.
Above all, he espoused honour. And infused his beliefs in all who served under him. Any who failed his code were executed, for the code was simple:
Honour your battle brothers, for they are your shield.
Honour your armour and weapons, for they are your life.
Honour your elders, for they are your past
Honour the innocent and do them no harm, for they are your future

In sieges he would do all he could to make sure the civilians did not suffer.
On the first day of a siege he would invite those civilians who wished to leave the city, they would be unharmed and escorted to safety. The city was invited to surrender totally and no blood would be spilt, on the condition that it would serve to give shelter and support to Corennus and his followers in the future.
On the second day of a siege he would proclaim that in not surrendering, the lives of those ruling the city were now Corennus' and if his army attacked now the city would be spared but the leaders may be judged harshly.
On the third day of a siege he would proclaim that in continuing to hold out those ruling were now dead men, but the city itself would be spared.
On the fourth day (only three cities ever suffered a fourth day) Corennus would proclaim that his tolerance of those remaining in the city was running thin, and that not only the leadership of the city would die but all officials too.
On the fifth day (only one city ever suffered a fifth day) the Primarch would launch an all out attack, directing his men to raze it to the ground. Women and children were to be spared, but those civilians who resisted were to be obliterated. The leaders of the city were brought before the young Primarch, and there in front of the city's survivors they were executed by the Primarch personally for causing needless suffering.

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:48 am

In the years following, Corennus conquered the entire planet. Bringing every Knight House under his control, and creating a truly unified people.
The first of his acts as undisputed ruler was to abolish the old Knight Houses. This caused outrage among many of his followers, but he then created new Knight Houses, based on merit instead of nobility.
These Knight Houses would be responsible for the tending of allotted land, raising of Knight Companies to protect that land and also to answer the needs of the Primarch and his new Ruling Council.
While many old Knight Houses were dispersed, many more were retained, including the Primarch's own House, which was elevated to the position of Honour House. The foremost of the Knight Houses.
From this start came the reforms which meant Knights were chosen not by nobility or lineage but ability. All boys of teenhood were required to present themselves at their nearest Knight House for selection.
Those that proved strong and intelligent were chosen for training. Those that failed selection were sorted to work that most suited them back on the land.
But training (devised by the Primarch himself from his years of warfare) was arduous. Indeed many of the Ruling Council were surprised and dismayed when their own sons failed the rigorous training, and many boys left the Houses battered and bruised after months, failing to comprehend why they had failed.
From this a new type of Knight was created. One that was stronger, faster, more resilient, and more intelligent than the soldiers Corennus had grown up with. Many asked him why, with the world now at peace, he was creating finer warriors.
Corennus' reply was always "What use is a sword that is rusted?"

All of Corennus' improvements, in martial affairs and in logistics, his drive to elevate his people beyond what they had been, were finally explained almost sixty years later....when the sky turned black.

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Thu Nov 20, 2014 5:34 am

The day the Emperor came.....
Such a day has never been seen since on Denev.
Every army, from every continent, drawn up in battle lines to face the sky ships. Swords drawn, spears ready, horses impatient, armour gleaming....

Then the Lord Corennus drawing forward on his great charger in front of his own retinue, the Knights Valiant, watching the biggest skyship slowly descend.
The cavernous doors opening, white light spilling from them.......and then.....giant armoured knights marching out, with gleaming swords and metal weapons in their fists.
An endless procession from the skyship it seemed. Row upon row upon row of faceless giant Knights. Each one easily a third to twice as big as each Denevan Knight. All except the Corennus, who dwarfed all.

Then an even greater light seemed to flood out from the ship, and another stepped forward, flanked by golden armoured knights. This one was bigger, much bigger than the rest.
Through the ranks of his army he strode, until he was standing in front of the Lord Knight's horse. There he slowly spread his arms, and to all witnesses' astonishment, he bent down on one knee.
Corennus, perplexed perhaps, watched impassively, as another came behind the golden figure. One who was perhaps even bigger than the man in front of him. Shaven head, and great jewels set in his armour like cats eyes. He too slowly knelt.
"What is this" the Lord Knight asked
The golden figure, whose face was radiant, but so much like the man he knelt before, smiled and replied "This is a joyous day Corennus. Today I have found a second son. Another of the lost of Terra!"
Corennus then slid off his saddle and strode over to the kneeling figures before him. At this the two thousand attending armoured knights swept up their metal weapons, aiming them at the Lord Knight. With a look, the Lord Knight forced the arms of the opposing army down.
The figure before Corennus looked up, an expression of surprise, joy, and pain in his face.
"You have discovered a great gift, Lord Knight" he said.
"Who are you?" Corennus asked
"We have much to discuss" came the reply, "I am the Emperor of Mankind. Of Terra and all among the stars. I am your father."

The Primarch, as I must now call him and as was revealed to him by the Emperor, sat in talks with him for four days. On the Fifth he declared before his people that his birthright had come to him in the form of the Emperor and his warriors. All of the past, the wars, the upheaval, the pain of reform had come to this moment. They were reunited with their long lost primogenitors, and they were now to be part of the great Imperium of Mankind.
The people of Denev took this news in different ways. The younger generations were overwhelmed with a sense of pride and joy, while the elders could see their way of life slipping away completely.
It was the elders that implored Corennus to tread carefully, and it was to them that he gave this address:
"My people. For though I now know I came to this world from another you will always be my people. I have lived among you, learned the ways of this world, learned its rich history and its many traditions.
Some of you are worried, and for this I cannot blame you. Change has come to this world. Some of you remember the old days, before our Unity. You fear that the coming of these others will mean the end of all you know. I say this is not true! Denev will survive, our Denevan customs WILL survive! I say to you now that not only will our traditions survive but they will build our future! You fear that these new men among us will teach us new ways. I say we will teach them OUR ways!"

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Thu Nov 20, 2014 6:29 am

The Knight Houses and warriors from the Second Legion brought by the Emperor to Denev mixed freely. The warriors brought special weapons, called "Bolters" to train the Knights in their use. These weapons put crossbows and bows to shame.
Selection for Astartes was started almost immediately, and the Legion's Apothecaries were most surprised to find a glut of suitable candidates due to the rigorous selection methods already in place in the Houses.
Many existing Knights of suitable age were selected, with those not suitable given special hormone therapy to allow them to train initiates to the exacting Astartes criteria.
Within six months of the Emperor's arrival the Second Legion's ranks swelled from 20000 to just under 1400000 with another 1400000 training for future reinforcement.

The Emperor himself oversaw the induction of the Denevan landscape into the factories of war for the newly christened Emperor's Knights and left many Techpriests and advisors from the Mechanicum to oversee the rest of the necessary upgrades to support the new Legion. Corennus' only stipulation was that the forges and other unsightly buildings should not impinge on the beauty of the landscape. So nearly all the Legion's Manufacturom was installed inside mountains, or underneath the land on each continent.

Taking command of his personal Strike Cruiser, the new Primarch of the Second Legion brought in sweeping reforms to the Legion itself as well. Originally the Legion was made up of two chapters of 10000 each. But on seeing the swollen numbers available Corennus reorganised the Legion into 10 chapters.
The First was made up of 5000 veterans mixed from the original legion and Corennus' most trusted Knights who had been remade into Astartes.
The Second to the 9th were made of 15000 Marines. Arranged into 15 Battle Companies of 1000 each. The Second to the 5th Chapters were Battle Chapters and the 6th to the 9th were Reserve Chapters
The 10th was made up of 5000 battle marines and 10500 Neophytes to replace casualties.

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Thu Nov 20, 2014 7:31 am

Years passed. And Corennus and Horus were the only two Primarchs known in the galaxy. Together they became firm friends, though bitter rivals in a brotherly way.
Fighting alongside each other the two Legions, Luna Wolves and Emperor's Knights carved a path through Ork and Xenos. Where Corennus would encircle an enemy and crush them with tactical charges, Horus would Teleport his elites and take out the leadership with precision.
Corennus would often chastise Horus for not allowing opponents an honourable way out. Horus would accuse Corennus of not seizing the initiative and doing what was necessary to fulfil the mission.
This continued for 5 years. Until the time when the Second Legion's fate was sealed.

Tyderion, the First Knight. The Chapter Master of the Knights Valiant and the original Master of the Second Legion had secretly been nursing a sense of injustice and betrayal since the day the Primarch had been found. For the time before that it had been his voice that the Emperor, and Horus, had listened to. His star had fallen while Corennus' had risen. And now no-one would listen to him. Even the Primarch was more concerned with Horus' advice than his own Legion's.
At night, when meditating, voices would come unbidden to him. Voices from beyond the dark. Ancient, powerful voices. Voices that promised him everything....if he would just let them take him.
Slowly, through campaign after campaign he whispered to his fellow Chapter Masters and those who were part of the original Legion. Inciting them at first to question the Primarch over his time apart from the rest of the Legion, and then to secretly prepare their own Chapters for open secession.

It occurred just before a campaign to annihilate an ork infestation in an area 3000 light years from Denev, with the Legion now standing at 300000 strong. Tyderion, knowing the Emperor and Horus were both too far away to intercede or aid the Primarch, launched his plan.

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Thu Nov 20, 2014 8:44 am

Using a hidden signal bounced off normal comm chatter, Tyderion mobilised the traitor forces to strike in every loyal ship of the fleet. Marines transferred months before for inter-chapter duties and training suddenly went on a rampage through the ships they were on. Setting off hidden charges on generators and uploading corrupted subroutines to the ship's servitors, sending them into a self destructive stampede.
Each of the Traitor ships fired their full salvos into the defenceless loyalist ships, before opening warp portals and disappearing into the Warp.

Corennus was enraged. Leaving his legion to repair and sort themselves out he sought out his father, and in a spectacular back and forth argument demanded and found an explanation for half his legion's betrayal.
Eventually the Emperor told Corennus of the true nature of the Warp, the source of Corennus' telekinetic power, and Chaos. But he forbade his son from following the traitor Tyderion.
Corennus retorted that his honour, and the lives lost due to Tyderion's treachery would not stay unavenged. Anyone who tried to stop him was his enemy.
Horus, tried to stop Corennus, from boarding his shuttle. The Primarch of the Luna Wolves was thrown halfway across the hangar bay by Corennus' fist augmented with his rage and psychic might.

Corennus' fleet disappeared into the warp on his arrival back with his Legion. The Emperor sent one final comm to him, nearly pleading with his son not to abandon him, and that his actions would have dire consequences for the future.
Corennus would not listen.
And so the Second Legion disappeared from the Imperium, and in order to maintain the secret of Chaos and the Chaos Gods the Emperor declared the Second Legion traitors and bade the Luna Wolves to raze the planet Denev IV. Horus carried out this duty with despair in his heart. The cries for mercy and surrender fell on deaf ears as the Luna Wolves destroyed all before them. The Emperor himself took part in the final assault on the final stronghold, the castle of House Jarlen.

The bodies of the dead were piled a mile high. Ignited in an immense burial pyre by a single lance strike from the Emperor's flagship.
The Emperor then took Horus and wiped his mind of the true story of Corennus completely, a new darker story being inserted in its place of open rebellion against himself and Horus. The Luna Wolves were mindwiped of all interaction with the Emperor's Knights save their destruction. The Official Record of the Second Legion was deleted by the Emperor's order.
Denev was given to the Mechanicum to become a Forge World.

And so memory of the Second Legion was forgotten.

But in the Warp......the Second Legion lived.

And ten thousand years later, they would return. With their scars healed.

Orginally? You'll laugh

I painted my first space marines Flame Orange! They looked pretty good too. but no-one else had orange marines.

Retconned to Gunmetal with Black and Red Banding.

The Second Legion (my own army fluff) Empty Re: The Second Legion (my own army fluff)

Post by Corennus Fri Nov 21, 2014 4:02 am

The Civil War between Corennus and Tyderion lasts 8000 years. Until finally Tyderion is captured, the traitor captains having been found and purged through bloody battles in the warp.

However, Corennus does not kill Tyderion. For he realises that it was his own failings that brought about the schism. And though Tyderion does suffer terribly for a thousand years at the hands of the Legion torturers, eventually he is redeemed and allowed to stand at the Primarch's side. A reminder always of the cost of Corennus' pride and honour.

So in M39 the legion finally starts to reassemble itself, being scattered across the warp.

But the Warp has not left the Legion unaffected. Though few of their number have succumbed to Chaos, there are those whose exposure to the Warp has seared their minds, leaving them much like the afflicted of the Blood Angels.

Only after it is discovered that some of the Legion's psychically gifted have an ability to "calm" the afflicted. The Afflicted for 3 thousand years before had been relegated to the 20th Chapter, originally named the Knights Resolute, they were now simply known as the Nameless. For the Warp had seared away their ability to reason and remember anything except blood and war. In between missions they would be forced into suspended animation to protect the rest of the fleet.

Gaius Calcifer was the first of these psychically gifted individuals to show an ability to calm a group of raging Nameless. He and the 20th Chapter Master, Exthelion, petitioned and got access to selection of other individuals who could do the same. Many of the veterans of the Legion had succumbed to the madness. To have them back functional again made the Chapter a significant tool again, for if in the presence of a Praetor (the name chosen by Calcifer for his psychic brethren) there were many ex Captains, Sergeants, and heroes of other Legion Chapters whose experience could be called upon. And if needed, a surgical insertion of these same men without a Praetor was a very useful terror weapon against the denizens of Chaos.

Sorry they had Companies of 10000 men each, and each company was made of a chapter of 1000 men each x 10.

I've changed the Second Legion to be 20 chapters of each since Chapters are more Knightly.

cool.
Also bit more fluff:

Being in a single chapter for all your life as part of the Legion is not inevitable. It is possible for veterans and those who show exceptional skill and bravery (above and beyond even the Veterans of the First Company in each chapter) to be selected for the Golden Helms as a battle brother.

The Golden Helms are the Elite Chapter in the Legion.
Their numbers are kept strictly at full strength, although the elite core of original Chapter Members have long been elevated to the vaunted Knights Valiant.
With a steady stream of aspirants presented by the Chapter Masters of the rest of the Legion the Golden Helms enjoy the cream of the crop.
Save those chosen by the Primarch himself to form his personal retinue (the First Chapter).

Main tactics used by Second Legion (utilising designs and vehicles updated by legion techmarines and stolen from Imperium)

1. Air Cavalry.
Mass Land Speeders armed with Multi-Meltas and Assault Cannons backed up by Devastator squads with Missile Launchers and Razorbacks. Troops can be mass scouts (for infiltrator advantage) or Tactical Squads in rhinos.

2. Land Cavalry.
Mass Biker squads (with Assault Bikes w/ Multi-Meltas) supported by Destructor Predators and troops in rhinos.

3. Teleport attack.
Mass Terminator squads (Grey Knights) w/ Incinerators and Psycannons supported by Dreadnoughts w/ t-l autocannon and Stormraven air support.

When i hear air cavalry, i expect the marines to ride in style to the battlefield.

THUNDERHAWK!!!

I know it's not really viable in regular games though, so your thing works as well i suppose.
Although thunderhawks are more fancy.
