Post by CrisLander Tue May 14, 2013 12:38 pm

Hey there! I'm new to the Warhammer 40k hobby, and I have what I believe is a decent starting Grey Knights army. What I have is:
1 Kaldor Draigo
1 Brother Captain Stern
6 Terminators
13 Grey knights, including one with an incinerator and another with a psycannon
1 Nemesis Dreadknight

That's about 1000 points, but it doesn't seem like a very efficient arrangement. Perhaps I should get a cheaper HQ, like Inquisitor Cortez, and leave Kaldor Draigo and Stern for whenever I field a larger army?

Any guidance as to how to create a decent army out of this group would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forums Brother Crislander Smile

For 1000 pts, it is adivsable to go with a cheaper HQ like you mentioned. Coteaz, an Inquisitor or even a Brotherhood Champ make good HQ's at this point level. Leaves you more points for more units.

The rest of what you have actually works...

5 Terminators
10 GK strike squad
1 Dreadknight

Just add an HQ, maybe a psyfleman dread or two. Or even some henchmen w/ transports. Still a lot of combinations possible at 1000pts.

Enjoy your stay!

Welcome to the brotherhood!

Like Rivan I would too would advice on a cheaper HQ. My recommendation would be to take an Ordo Malleus inquisitor for 25 points, slap some Termi armor on him for 40 and then mount a psycannon for 15. Hes an 80pt HQ who is cheaper than both Coteaz and a Brotherhood Champion and brings a psycannon and daemon hammer to the table. If you want to have a little more fun toss on a daemon blade and hope you get some passive effects from the sword like Familiar, Deathlust or Dark Resurrection.

In terms of troops: that looks pretty solid.

I would probably put the incinerator on the termies as they will probably be your main unit for CC, mix between halberds and hammers. On the Strike Squad, I would recommend putting 2 psycannons and make sure they have at least 1 hammer in it, that way they can take on bigger things with high toughness.

Dreadknights are always nice but they will get a lot of attention from your opponent. If you are going to start him on the battlefield instead of deep striking him, I would probably invest in a personal teleporter and maybe just putting on a heavy incinerator, again kitting him for CC. I encourage to try them out but I think you might find at a lower point game that 200pt can be put towards other more useful things i.e. kitted out transports or another troop choice.

Everything else though I would experiment with and cater to where you notice your list is lacking in.

psyflemen Dreads or a vindicare assassin can be good anti armor choices.

Henchmen, especially death cult assassins matched up with crusaders can be a very scary close combat unit just stick them in a transport of some kind preferably LRCs and let them loose.

Or if you need that AP2 weaponry to deal with those termie lists maybe considered a henchmen squad of Plasma cannon servitors and acolytes with plasma guns.

Like Rivan said there are a lot of options to play with when it comes to 1000pts. But you do have a solid core to work with, just need to do some games under your belt and do some experimentation until you find a list that fits your play style. Good luck, I hope some of my Tweeks will help you in building your list.

Cheers.

Thanks for the tips! I was indeed planning to Deep Strike the Dreadknight, but I'll look into other options. So far, these are all the pieces I have, so I'll look into what to purchase next. The Ordo Malleus looks like an interesting option!

Now, this might be a pretty dumb question (but remember, I'm totally new to Warhammer 40k): If I want to change part of the loadout, can I just "say" the change, or does the unit have to actually physically have the change? For example, can I just say that one of the termies has a banner, or does the figure actually have to have a banner for it to be valid?

In a friendly game there is no problem, just explain your oponent what they are carrying!

in tournaments you must have in the miniature what the list says what it have!

the classic "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG)

lol well said Sirron Smile

A heads up if you are going to run the Ordo Malleus inquistor, GW does not make an inquisitor in termi armour, so what I do is either, proxy a inquistor model and say what he has equipped or I can run a grey knight termie that is kitted out with the psycannon and hammer. If the termie is to generic looking I will run a special character model like BC Stern. Even then I need to say, hes equipped with a hammer and psycannon, not a sword and SB. If you are going to proxy just written down the model you are using it for, and make sure to identify the model to your opponent at the start of the game, after that its fair game in my books.

Thank you brother Sirron! I would've actually asked what to do if there is no actual figure with the loadout you need (like an inquisitor in termie armor) but Vindicare is one step ahead of me and got that taken care of! I imagine one would do more or less the same for Mordrak? (I was thinking that in case I wanted to use him, I'd proxy a Brother-Captain)

As for introductions, I'm 35 years old, married (but no children), originally from Venezuela but currently living in Alicante, Spain. I find it pretty neat that there are people from all over the world in this thread alone! Can't wait to get to know the rest of the people.

I've always been interested in miniature strategy games, and had a group of friends back in Venezuela that regularly got together to play Heroclix (roughly 7 years ago or so). We got tired of heroclix because of their constant pumping of expansions that kept progressively breaking the balance in the game, and forcing you to buy boosters in hopes of getting that one clix that you needed for your team. Nevertheless, miniature strategy games (and Warhammer 40k in particular) always looked interesting, and I recently discovered a place where people regularly play so I decided to give it a shot, see how it goes...

I'd drop Draigo and use the points for another unit of terminators. I don't have my book with me at the moment so can't add up the points you have their already, but I'll try and offer some more useful suggestions when I do.

If you want a really cool looking mordrak model, I would recommend getting the Asterion Moloc model from forge world.

heres a link of what he looks like: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-and-Accessories/ASTERION_MOLOC_AND_IVANUS_ENKOMI_OF_THE_MINOTAURS.html

the model is beautiful, and his spear and shield dont come attached so you can easily glue on a daemon hammer and termie strombolter with little modification to it. As it is a forge world model he can be a little pricey but he also comes with another nicely sculpted model: Ivanus enKomi chapter chaplain who you can very easily proxy as a brother champion or justicar. Wow that is a beautiful model! I want one haha. Would make a good Draigo as well for friendly games with the shield, you could magnetise it so you could use the model for either.

I should probably get around to magnetizing more weapons for this model, as hes probably my main model i use for my grand masters, and with the the minotaurs chapter getting a new update in imperial armor 12 too bringing him as a ally commander may also be worthwhile again. Smile

Well if your open to the idea of extracting it off the internet give it a couple of months after its released and it will probably appear online, all the other Imperial armors have.

Post by CrisLander Wed May 22, 2013 2:11 pm

Hey there! I'm back.

After further tinkering with the team, I think I have this as my low-point army:

Inquisitor Coteaz (I like his special abilities too much)
5 termies (1 w/ psycannon, w/psybolt ammo)
10 grey knight strike squad (1 w/ psycannon, 1 w/incinerator, w/psybolt ammo)
1 Dreadknight (w/ Daemonhammer)
Inquisitor Warband: 2 Death Cult Assasins + Warrior Acolyte in power armor and storm bolter

That's roughly 750 points. And to bring it up to 1000, perhaps add a teleporter and a heavy psycannon to the Dreadknight, 1 more terminator w/ a banner, and 3 more grey knights...

What do you think?

If you drop the power armour on the acolyte and the hammer from the dreadknight, which is largely useless now anyway, you could get another 2 acolytes with storm bolter, or even one of them with a hotshot lasgun. Basically I think power armour on acolytes is useless as you can get a whole another wound for cheaper, which puts out additional shots. Otherwise, it looks good Smile

Looks good brother! I agree with SB on the power armor and Hammer. I wouldnt invest to much more in your dreadknight if you are simply trying to fill in points to reach a 1000pt. Instead I would look at tossing in another 10 man strike squad or consider more DCAs and a transport of some kind, or servitors with plasma cannons. Smile

Good luck!

Hey there, I'm back! After playing for about a month and a half with my Grey Knights, I'll post my updated 1000-point army:

Coteaz
1 Termie squad (5 termies, 1 psycannon, 2 halberds)
1 strike squad (8 GKs, 1 incinerator, 3 halberds)
1 purgation squad (5 GKs, 4 psycannons)
1 Dreadknight (w/ Hammer & Heavy psycannon)
Warband (6 DCA, 5 acolytes)

That squad has done wonders for me. I just stash the purgation squad somewhere well hidden from the enemies, and use the holy sight to shoot them to the tune of 18 shots per round, while the termies and the warband go to town on close combat and the strike squad shoots supporting fire while controlling an objective. The Dreadknight (which I've nicknamed "The Slugger") goes around one-shotting any monstruous unit in sight, and Coteaz has a field day throwing his eagle around and smashing the crap out of enemies with the hammer.

Taking your advice I removed the power armor and assault rifles off the Acolytes, and got a whole bunch more DCAs. But what I cannot understand is why is the hammer useless on the Dreadknight? That guy is the terror of the board, if he manages to hit you (and he often does) odds are that with double strength and the Nemesis Force rule, you're going to die right there and then.

The only weakness I've found is against vehicles. I can't field a Vindicator Assassin at that price in a 1000-point army (I mean, it eats up 15% of my army, nearly what the purgation squad cost), and trying to damage a vehicle with the rest of the units is a crapshoot..
