500 GK list

Post by guardian angel on Fri May 31, 2013 5:57 am

So I played GK briefly in the 5th ed, sold everything and am now thinking about buying a small army again! By small I'm thinking 500pts worth! Is it possible for GK to do an army of this size?

I haven't played any 6th ed 40k so have no idea what really changed, but one thing that has to be in the list is my HQ: Ordo mal Inquisitor+TDA+psycannon. I love this guy and have done a great conversion of him!

So what would you recommend for a "small" GK army? GKSS's?

At the very least for a 500 point list, maybe 5 Terminators and 10 Strike Squad Grey Knights.

Or 10 Strike Squad Grey Knights, and either a Dreadknight or a Dreadnought.

Then outfit your list with an inquisitor.

Perhaps combine first strike's idea for infantry and ninteen's idea of a dreadnought for heavy support.

Ok, so how about this instead:

Ordo mal inquisitor, tda, psycannon, psyker

10GKSS, 2 psycannons, 2 hammers, psybolts, halberd on the justicar

5GKT, psycannon

I think that totals 600pts, and should be a legal army. I only have to buy 3 box sets to make it as well. I know it's small, but could this work?

Well, I was already considering that I could buy a dreadnought and that would take me up to 750pts odd.

I see most people advocate the dual autocannons, but I was thinking TL lascannons and a DCCW with flamer for fun. Would provide long range anti tank, plus short range goodness.

Or is it just better to focus on long range support, rather than mix & match?

The psyfledredd can be just as brutal up close (not in CC, but anywhere from 1" to 48"). I say give one a try and see how it plays. I did because I was a bit sceptical, but now I never go without them.

2 autocannons with psybolt ammunition, making them 4 strength 8 twin-linked shots a turn... lazcannons seem nice, but you're essentially paying 20 points for 15 points for 1 more str, granted lascannons stand more of a chance of killing the likes of terminators, but do you really want your big guns aimed at a single terminator, or would you like to blow up some tanks

also, the psyflemen dreads are one of biggest assets in taking down flyers, 4 shots rerollable... we should be getting atleast 1 six on average.

thats my 2 cents anyway

I even find them useful against tyrannies, they can reliably put wounds on the bigger creatures, and can devastate a unit of raveners or warriors.

Ok, so here's a question for ya: Is 40k in the current edition just all about who can out-shoot the other army, or does close combat still count for something?

I just ask, as If I invest again in GK I want to have a balanced list that engages in combat as well as has a long range threat. Or has this element disapperaed from 40k?

Not at all, assault is still important in 6th. Granted shooting is now more important than in 5th, and assulting has become more of a careful planned business. But still assault is still very important and every army should be prepared for the finishing blow (or have something to counter it effectively as do Tau).

Re: 500 GK list

Post by guardian angel on Tue Jun 18, 2013 6:22 am

So, I've decided to take the plunge again and have ordered the following:
1x GK terminator boxset
2x GKSS boxsets
1x normal dreadnought

I already have my HQ so that's sorted:)

I plan on making a small 750pt list for fun games from this lot.

Some questions though:
1) what is a good loadout for GKT squads? So I model them up right!
2) Is it worth giving the GKSS justicar a weapon upgrade?
3) I was thinking about running a small unit of psykers due to my HQ being an inquisitor. Would they be effective? They look fun:)

Re: 500 GK list

1) Depends what you really want out of them in CC. I personally believe that you should always have 1 hammer and probably should default to the psycannon as your heavy weapon of choice. Apart from that, it's your call:

Want a bit more survivability against AP2 in CC? Take swords to boost your invun to 4++.
Want to strike quicker than your opponent? Take halberds to boost your initiative to 6.

2) I personally think you should always equip your justicar with a halberd; making your justicar strike at I6 with weapons that can insta-death in a challenge is big and clever! Some people think giving him a master crafted hammer is the way to go, I'm not entirely convinced as in a challenge I'd be worried that he'd die before he can cause a wound though I imagine people like the re-rolls for destroying vehicles more reliably - depends on what you'd want to do with him.

3) Never fielded them, they seem quite nice but I always default to taking servitors + some warrior acolytes; very cheap heavy weapons - 10pts for a heavy bolter... 20pts for a plasma cannon!!!

I'd say 1x2x2 (1 hammer, 2 swords, 2 halberds) is a better config. But as borther Omenos said it'll depend on what you are looking for in CC.

Dunno really, just want a versatile setup. I think I'll do at least 1 hammer and sword, will have to decide on the halberds.

Regarding rhino's; are they still worth it in the new edition?

Re: 500 GK list

Post by guardian angel on Tue Jun 18, 2013 1:01 pm

So here's my idea for a ~750pt list:

HQ:
Ordo mal inquis, tda, psycannon=80

TROOPS:
5 GKT, psycannon=225
10 GKSS, 2 psycannons, hammer, psybolts, halberd on justicar=255

HS:
Dreadnought, autocannon, psyammo, heavy flamer=140

That leaves a possible 50pts to go to 750!

What do you guys think? I know the dread isn't the optimal loadout, I just love the idea of having the DCCW with flamer for some versatility.
Ultimately this list is for fun so doesn't have to be uber competitive.

Any ideas for the 50pts? I was thinking maybe a henchmen squad?

Re: 500 GK list

Post by guardian angel on Wed Jun 19, 2013 5:21 am

So this is what I've decided to do for a 750pt fun list:

HQ:
Ordo mal inquis, tda, psycannon=80

ELITES:
6 WA, 3 plasma guns, 3 boltguns=57

TROOPS:
5 GKT, psycannon=225
10 GKSS, 2 psycannons, hammer, psybolts=250

HS:
Dreadnought, autocannon, psyammo, missile launcher OR autocannon=135

My thinking is the Inquisitor joins the GKT and then the GKSS and it move across the field supported by the dread. The henchmen squad I'm not sure about, maybe just sit in terrain, but for their points they could put a world of hurt on high armour save stuff!

How does that all look?

Re: 500 GK list

I decided to change things slightly to this:

HQ:
Ordo mal inquis, tda, psycannon=80

ELITES:
6 psykers, 3 boltguns=75

TROOPS:
5 GKT, psycannon=225
10 GKSS, 2 psycannons, hammer, halberd on justicar=235

HS:
Dreadnought, 2x TL autocannons, psyammo=135

The idea of the list is to have fun:) It's based around the idea of an inquisitor setting off on a small mission with this band of troops to support him:)
