1000 Points

Post by Malleus85 on Tue Oct 30, 2012 4:43 am

Greetings, I am a long time player of WHFB and have been playing Bretonnians for an approximate 10 years. So when I decided to cave in and try a game of 6th edition I was impressed with how a lot of the WHFB mechanics have been incorporated into 40K so decided to browse the armies to see what appeals to me in terms of the miniatures. It was very close between the Black Templars and the Grey Knights but in the end I decided that the Grey Knights are the army for me as I just love the amount of details and modelling potential of the models.

Unfortunately I forgot my codex so have to go on what I have included in various wishlists on the internet and amend this post when i have the codex infront of me with points values and upgrades but here is a basic overview of what I hope to include in the army.

Inquisitor

7 Purifiers with 2 Psycannons and Halberds in Rhino

10 GKSS with 2 Psycannons, Psybolt Ammo in Rhino

5 GKSS with Psycannon in Razorback

Dreadnought - 135 Pts
2 x Twin Linked Autocannons, Psybolt Ammunition

Apologies for the lack of information, I was excited baout ordering the modesl and wanted to get a little guidance first.

Hi brother,
welcome on board ! cheers
For 1000 points i prefer a GM or a Libbie (cheaper and giving lots of buffs) to an inquisitor even if is cheaper for the same gear, the special rules of the GM or the codex psy powers of the libbie are invaluable if you ask me.
again i would prefer termies to purifiers ... i think they are stronger and can DS
The dread is a must-have so keep him ! Wink Razz

Damn I forgot to update this when I had the book infront of me, I was distracted by the photographs on here.

The OMI was going to have Power Armour, a Combi Weapon and Psyker upgrade -78 points I believe

The only problem with the list for me is the H.Q.
We have some realy good H.Q choices and you (from what I am seeing) have just got the cheepest one to fill the slot. In a Grey knight army your H.Q can direct the way you play and bolster your army. The only spots in a vech you have avaliable is in the razorback (I don't think he will be any good in there), and in the rhino. What is he there for? If he had some grenades, I could see a point. Also what psy powers are you going for?

I was going to run him with the Purifiers to give them re rolls to hit (Divination Lore)

How about I go a slightly different direction and have something like

HQ
Brother-Captain - Psybolt Ammo, Master Crafted Storm Bolter

Troops
5 x Terminators - 2x Psycannon, 2x Halberd, 1x Hammer
10 x Strike Squad - 2x Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
10 x Strike Squad - 2x Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo

Heavy Support
Dreadnought - 2 x Twin Linked Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo

The use of divination is fine, but it would be better elsewhere, like on a squad that would be shooting every turn with all its weapons.
So no a brother captin, posible one of the wost choices in the army, he just does nothing to the army. You have given him none of the wargear that can do something eg grenades.
It may sound like I am just picking on you but I am not, there are very few wrong choices in the army but there are some things that will make the army work better, bro capting is not one of them, he comes with no special rules, eg grand strat, I have been expecting you, ect. He cannot buff a squad without wargear and you have not got any. Take Coteaz, cheaper and will do more for the army. If you do nto like him then find the points for a Grand master or a Lib

Coteaz, he's the model with the Eagle on his wrist? That's who i was using for my OMI. To be honest this is my first experience of 40K so not really sure if special characters are permitted in my club.

I know in WHFB we have a special/named character ban, will find out if its the same thing for 40K

Yes that is the one.
Coteaz is not that powerfull, at his cost he has average stat lines but he is more about what he can do for the army, this gets more effective at higher point games.
Normal inquisitors are all good as well, but just like in fantasy you need to look at what wargear they have and how it can effect a unit. Also if you are takeing an inquisitor then a inqisitorial unit can help the army, they fill some holes in our army.
There is a post on the somewhere around here that is all about H.Q. Units, if you havent already then have a read.
Also you cannot have 2 psycannons in 5 man terminator squad. If you have a 2nd psycannon terminator you can make one an inquisitor with a psycannon and give him Divination.
I have never seen the point of baning named characters, even in fant, if someone wants to spend over 400 points on one guy that can be taken out by one spell and a bad dice roll then who am I to stop them.

Its the typical thing of just whinging about a special character instead of adapting (or attempting to) a playstyle to deal with the said character, however for 40k there is no special/named character ban so its looking like the Coteaz list is a go

So Coteaz
5 x Termies, Psycannon, 2 x Halberd, 1 x Hammer
10 GKSS, 2 x Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
10 GKSS, 2 x Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
Dreadnaught, 2 x TLAC, Psybolt ammo

That looks like a damn solid list for 1k points, and is pretty much what I'd run at those points, although personally I'd probably find the 10points to switch out Coteaz for a psyker/psycannon Inq to go with the termies.

Thanks, I figured that since terminators are better in 6th edition (apparently) I may as well make the most of the fact that they're troops.

Well I could drop the Halberds on the SS Justicar's to have a terminator inquisitor as that'd give me 10 points, also would answer my debate about where to place Coteaz

Pretty much perfect with the second one, although the Inq can't use psybolt ammo with his psycannon so you could toss a halberd back onto one of the strike squads. Should definitely be fun to play, let us know how it goes when you use it.

Thanks, Halberd will go on one of the Justicars.

With the OMI, am I right in thinking that when I choose the Psyker "power/ability" that he reverts back to having a force sword instead of hammer?

ALso thinking about adding a Warding Stave into the Terminators to protect them from Hammers/Fists but not sure where to get the points from, any suggestions?

Re: 1000 Points

No the Inq no longer has to take the force weapon when he takes the psyker upgrade, it was changed in the FAQ a while ago to let him keep the deamon hammer(which is awesome)
Tbh I wouldn't bother with a warding stave at this points level. If you're worried about fists/hammers then give the termies halberds instead of swords. The most likely people to be carrying a hidden fist/hammer are MEQ who will be cut down by the halberds, or even precision shot by the OMIs psycannon. Hammernators are the only real threat, and since most armies can't take more than one squad at these points you could simply fall back and dakka them down with all your shooting. However if you really think you need one then I'd drop the psybolts on the termies, with only 4men using them(since psycannons don't benefit) you'll miss them the least.
