Smallest Effective Unit Size of Paladins (non-solodins)
Smallest Effective Unit Size of Paladins (non-solodins)
Brothers, what's the smallest unit size of Paladins you have used successfully? I'm toying with the idea of a two-man or a three-man Paladin unit. The idea being that it's a reasonably small point investment for decent board control, staying power, and support. They would deep strike in and do what they can from there. This would be something done outside of Draigowing, potentially using a GM to make them scoring or just use them as contesters.
Thoughts?

Personally I think the smallest effective unit size is 5 men, two relentless psycannons on the turn you deepstrike are invaluable.

A paladin unit of less than 5 models can be useful but only with Draigo IMHO because they are automatically troops.
To use a GM's grand strategy to make a 1-man, 2-man or 3-man paladin unit would be a waste. Just my two cents.

I agree, and a bad roll makes only one of them scoring??? Take at least 5, get the 2 Psycannons.

If you're mostly going for the Psycannons what is the breaking point between choosing Paladins and regular old-fashioned Terminators?

with GKT you can only get 1 psycannon for a 5 men unit, 2 with the pallies (plus all their special rules and 2 PV...

@topic: Answer depends on your usage of the paladins. If u play a Draigowing with SRs Solodins are a viable choice to put them inside your SRs.
If i look as this thread u probably mean DS or deployed. I think smaller than 5 man Paladin squads only make sense if u put them in a durable transport.

How would an MSU style Draigowing work? I only ever see either one Deathstar and a solodin, or the overkill of two ten-mans.
Has anybody ever experimented with, say, a five-man with dual Psycannon followed by five 2-3 man squads?

Re: Smallest Effective Unit Size of Paladins (non-solodins)
The problem you'd have with a list like that is you've got nearly 1500pts tied up in paladins but no real threat from them. With only 2 psycannons they aren't going to do much to mech, and you even lack enough stormbolters to deal with infantry, I could easily outshoot an army like that using pretty much anything except nids who'd out assault them with numbers. I find if you're going paladins you need multiples of 5 for the psycannons then you try and use your remaining points for something like psylfleman for some range.Vecuu wrote:How would an MSU style Draigowing work? i find that the fact paladins are so costly and terminators are cheaper plus Brotherhood banners rule to be my breaking point termies with 4 attacks on the charge with auto force activated weapons to be amazing
