1250pt New to WH40K List Empty 1250pt New to WH40K List

Hello All,

Here is my hand at a fairly balanced starting army list. I have done a lot of reading and list searching and notice there is a LOT of variety out there for lists, but I wanted an army that was fun to play and not necessarily one that will give me the most wins (and/or is cheesy). I also wanted a list with a bit of everything so here's my first crack. I've already bought most of the minis so any suggestions for changes would preferably be with loadouts and not units. Thanks! Smile

HQ
Coteaz..................................................................................x pts

Troops
Inq. Henchmen Squad.........................................................x pts
2x Crusaders
2x Servitors (1x Servo Arm, 1x Multi-Melta)
1x Jokaero
(No henchmen purchased yet - my thoughts were to use them as a bit of a shield around Coteaz with some fire support as well, alternately thought about some Death Cultists instead of the Jokaero)

6x GKSS..............................................................................x pts
Razorback w/ TL Lascannon
Justicar – 1 MasterCrafted Nemesis Hammer
1x Psycannon
3x Nemesis Force Halberds
1x Nemesis Force Sword

6x GKSS..............................................................................x pts
Justicar – 1 MasterCrafted Nemesis Hammer
1x Psycannon
3x Nemesis Force Halberds
1x Nemesis Force Sword

Elites
5x Paladins..............................................................................x pts
1x Apothecary
1x Psycannon, Halberd
1x MasterCrafted Nemesis Daemon Hammer
1x Nemesis Force Halberd
1x Nemesis Falchions (for wound allocation)

Heavy Support
Nemesis Dreadknight............................................................x pts
1x Heavy Incinerator
1x Personal Teleporter

Total: 1200 pts

I am not sure what to do with the remaining 50 pts. I thought about adding one GK to each my strike squads, or bolstering the Henchmen Squad.
I actually just realized my Henchmen are troops, so I could also upgrade the Razorback squad to Purifiers, or the regular GKSS squad to Interceptors. I think I am liking the Purifier option.

To eventually build my list up to 1500 pts I was thinking of adding a 5 man GKT squad, or a Psyfleman Dread + further bolster the GKSS squad numbers.

Welcome to the forums Alladin the Paladin!

I like your list--good shooty list for 1200 pts. You have the right idea with keeping your war band either shooty or close-combat. It doesn't really benefit them to be both. In your case, 5 psykers for the remaining points adds to your long range shooting. Since Coteaz can get powers from the BRB, your war band squad can get re-rolls on their to hit rolls (if Coteaz gets the Divination Primaris power). 5 psykers gives you a 36" S7 AP2 large blast. I recommend switching out the multi-meltas for either plasma cannons or heavy bolters for longer range.

If the dice favors you, your jokaero might add another 12" range to all your shooting that doesn't use a flame template Very Happy

Thanks for the reply, Rivan!

I thought about Psykers originally when putting together m warband, but then I didn't think I had the extra 50 points (miscalculation) and I didn't want to spend the bulk of my warband points on psykers.

However, taking your suggestion to heart I did some maths, and found that I can still sub out my GKSS in the razorback and replace them with 6x Purifiers, with 1 MC Hammer (Can't Touch 'Dis), 1 Psycannon, 1 Incinerator, 3 Halberds for an extra 10 points over the original GKSS squad, and still add 5 psykers if I take out a servitor.

I like the sound of that. 6 more attacks, an extra heavy weapon flamer, plus cleansing flame. Worth the 10pts over the original GKSS cost... I knew I liked Coteaz for a reason.

I like your list, it sure looks fun - however, a few suggestions.

Your Paladins eats ALOT of your points, and I doubt you will need the Apothecary at 1200 points. I would save those points and use them to add more fun and power to your list like:
- A second Psycanon for the Paladins (power)
- Upgrade the second GKSS to Interceptors (fun)
- Upgrade the Inq. Squad to have Plasma-canon Servitors (fun/power)
- Ad a few more bodies to the Interceptors

Finally, I would personally try to move the GKSS into a Rhino, and add more bodies to the unit. It is a troop choice, and MSU's have a hard time in 6th. But that is purely from a competitive point of view and has nothing to do with fun.

Hey Slind, thanks for the suggestions! This is all great.

With respect to the Paladins/Apothecary, I decided to use them for 2 reasons:
1) Financially, I do not want to purchase more boxes of units at this point, and they help round out a 1250 pt list. Playing at a lower points value will certainly see them used as regular GKTs
2) Being an "Apothecary" myself, I felt we needed some representation in my first army list(More along the "fun" aspect of my list) Smile

I do see some constrains in my unit numbers, especially if I use one GKSS as interceptors or purifiers, but that is something I can address with a bit of magnetizing.

One thing I have found a challenge with starting 40k is the wealth of possibilities out there when list building. It is definitely exciting as well, but more often than not it seems that a 500pt list for a certain Army contains very different units than a 750pt list, and a 1000pt list and so on. From a financial perspective, I wanted to get a solid core to build from, and would hate to think that I need to shelve 50% of my current army and go buy 4 boxes of GKTs and 2x Stormravens just to go from a 1500 to a 1750pt list. I know this may hurt me strategically, but I am nowhere near playing competitively, and I would much rather have a hard-fought loss with a list that I've created and nurtured than go and drop $400 dollars simply to have a more competitive list.

Eventually I know you do get redundancies in your units as you keep collecting, but I would like to keep this as "organic" as possible through attrition and not a raze and rebuild scenario. But now I am just rambling...

Another reason for the above is I want my next big purchase to be a second starter army, so I can use it to convince my friends to take up the hobby with me. Smile

He he... my girlfriend is a doctor of pharmacy and she keeps bugging me about including that Apothecary in my Paladin squads.

There is nothing wrong with growing your list slowly as you go. I did the same (six years ago), starting with an HQ and 2 troops and then slowly expanding as i found problems and lackings in the list.

The best way about growing your list slowly, is that it is quite easy to scale your list up and down, since your list was developed that way.

Another thing, is that you do not need to shelve your army to go to 1750. Knowing your list inside out, will go a long way compensating for "sub-optimal" unit selection. Take a look at tournament lists, the guys who are just playing the latest boy-toys without knowing how to play them are beaten down by "weak" lists in the hand of good players.

Last advice: Ebay is your friend if you are on a budget.
