Game Empire San Diego GT 1500pts Empty Game Empire San Diego GT 1500pts

Post by Rivan Mon Jun 04, 2012 11:08 am

Participated in my LGS's first ever GT that had 34 participants (including several top nationally ranked players who either flew down or drove down to San Diego).

I just brought a smaller version of my 1850 list that did very well in the last GT I attended since I had no time to get other units painted and ready. 1500 pts is really tough and my list lost a lot of punching power (down to 5 paladins from a full 10-man squad in my 1850 list).

Still, after the 2-day 6 round tournament, I ended up with a win-loss-draw record of 3-1-2. I placed 6th in Battlepoints and ended up in the top 10 overall Very Happy

Had another awesome highlight (coincidentally, it was vs. the same 'nids player where I rolled 44 straight 2+ saves with 4 paladins). This time, he multi-assaulted my 5 paladins w/ GM attached with 2 squads of termagaunts and a trigon. His tervigon was within 12" so shadows in the warp was in effect. My paladins were forced to divide their attacks and 4 of them laid into the gaunts and killed a bunch. 1 paladin the GM were in base contact with the trigon. The paladins tried to activate hammerhand but failed because of SITW, so the halberd, needing "6's", failed to wound the trigon. It was all up to my GM at I5 or else the trigon would have 7 attacks at I4 and would probably do a lot of damage. I had no choice but to save my psychic test for the force kill.

I told my opponent that my GM will force kill his trigon. He said my GM can TRY and force kill his trigon. I said, no, my GM WILL force kill his trigon on 3d6. I rolled 3 attacks to hit and hit 3 times. I told him I will roll 1 "6" to wound and true enough, I rolled 1 "6" that put a wound on the trigon. I then said here comes the force kill and I rolled a 4,4 & 2 to send the trigon into the warp on 3d6!!! Razz This will definitely be etched in my GM's list of awesome feats!

Thanks Brother. It was a lot of fun. What's more, it's a rewarding feeling when people are surprised to see a GK list that only has one of each unit.

My opponents were asking: "you only have 1 psyfleman dread?" or "no purifiers?" or "no razorbacks?" Very Happy

Great job Brother!
It is definitely not a bad thing to think outside of the box now and again. Not having a "standard" force probhably threw most oponants strategies out of the window leaving you as the cool headed one Twisted Evil
Congratulations! It seems like you are beginning to make quite the name for yourself on the tournament circuit these days!

Grandmaster Rivan,

Congratulations on the tournament,

Any chance of getting a recap on your list (1850) and your reduced list of 1500? just to get an idea of what it is again.. I remember a LRC with some henchmen or something..

Thanks,
Brother Flaxis

Of course Brother Flaxis.

Both list were actually based on my 1750 list that placed 16th (out of 50) at the Kingdom Con GT. This was the first time I used this list in a GT.

1750
HQ
GM - Rad, Blind & Psychotroke grenades, 2 servo-skulls
Coteaz

ELITES
10 Paladins - 4 psycannons, banner, assorted weapons
Ven Psyfleman dread

TROOPS
10 GKSS - 2 psycannons
7 Warband - 5 deathcults, 1 crusader, 1 mystic

HEAVY
LR - godhammer pattern

Bumping it up to 1850 for the Slaughter In Space GT, I could have rearranged the points to get more units in there but I wanted to stay with the theme. So I just purchased upgrades with the extra 100pts. Not very efficient use of points I know but it fit the fluff quite well. The tournament organizers actually rated it a comp score of 5 out of 10 which was not bad at all. For comparison, they rated another GK list (purifier spam w/ psyflemen dread spam and warband spam) a 2.5. My list placed 4th out of 24.

1850
HQ
GM - Psycannon, Rad, Blind & Psychotroke grenades, 2 skulls
Coteaz

ELITES
10 Paladins - 4 psycannons, banner, warding staff, assorted weapons
Ven Psyfleman dread

TROOPS
10 GKSS - 2 psycannons, 1 hammer, psybolt ammunition
7 Warband - 5 deathcults, 1 crusader, 1 mystic

HEAVY
LR - godhammer pattern

Reducing it to 1500 for the Game Empire GT, it placed 10th out of 34.

1500
HQ
GM - Psycannon, Rad, Blind & Psychotroke grenades, 2 skulls
Coteaz

ELITES
5 Paladins - 2 psycannons, warding staff

TROOPS

7 Warband - 5 deathcults, 1 crusader, 1 mystic

HEAVY

You'll notice that the one problem with this list is the lack of mobility. I help mitigate this by incorporating and utilizing deepstrike opportunities but the main key is deployment and placement of objective markers. I don't have to worry about controlling the whole board. All I have to worry about is controlling a sector that has the most objectives closer to one another. This allows me to keep my small, elite force together in order to compliment each units' abilities (12" reinforced aegis, Coteaz' Sanctuary, etc).

Of course, sometimes, I'm forced to really come up with creative ways to make the list work. One example was when I played a Necron wraith-wing list with A LOT of wraiths plus 2 FW Tombstalkers. The mission was capture and control. His list was a lot faster than mine since wraiths are like jump infantry and he had a lot of them. The only weakness I saw was that he only had 3 5-man scoring units. In a nutshell, he sent almost all his wraiths towards my objective followed by a 5-man scoring unit. He kept his HQ's and 2 scoring units plus 2 units of wraiths to guard his own. I could've pushed for the draw and concentrated on defending my objective but where's the fun in that Razz My GKSS and ven dread sat on my objective with the LR nearby (pretending to help defend my objective). As multiple units of wraiths and tombstalkers bore down on my objective, I completely ignored them and concentrated and shot up the 5-man troops unit following behind and destroyed (I can tell he didn't understand my target choice). The LR waited until the wraiths were on my side of the board before it started speeding across towards his objective. His wraiths descended on my GKSS and dread, totally wiping out the GKSS. The dread, emperor bless him, tied up 12 wraiths for 3 full assault turns Razz He eventually went down (as I expected and planned) but no matter, because wraiths are not scoring. Meanwhile I DS'ed my 10 paladins near his objective and kept them together as one blob (of course I made them scoring). GM joined them and I just ate through all the units he had near his objective. I lost my objective but he didn't hold it while I held his Smile

good point Brother ... the essential thing to keep in mind is "OBJECTIVE" and your opponent lost his way trying to prove he had the bigest balls of the battle ... too bad for him ! Razz Razz
