Grey Knights (need more men!) First list attempt

Post by Tombomb7 on Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:36 am

Hi,

First post, first attempt at making an army list for my first army in over 10 years! I was interested in the hobby in my teens but am keen to get back into it somewhat now. So that's a brief introduction of myself. It's OK you don't have to welcome me back to the fold Razz

I went with Grey Knights because the models looked cool and I thought I would enjoy painting them. I've not actually played a single game with my Grey Knights yet.
I have based my army around the models I currently have for my Grey Knights, I bought a few based on how much I liked them (StormRaven, DreadKnight). I know some will disagree but each to their own.

Initially I thought I would have around 1500 points which would have been nice. But no, Grey knight point costs struck.

HQ - Grand Master - psybolt ammo, orbit strike relay - 275
Elites - Vindicare - 145
Troop - x5 Terminators, 1 Psycannon, Psybolt ammo - 245
Troop - x5 Strike Squad, Psycannon, Psybolt ammo - 130
FastA - StormRaven, TLMM, TLLC - 205
FastA - StormRaven, TLMM, TLLC - 205
HS - Dreadknight, heavy Psycannon - 155
HS - Dreadnought, TLAC x2, psybolt ammo - 135
HS - Land Raider, psybolt ammo - 260

Total: 1710 (Gear can push this to 1750)
 Many big things for the enemy to shoot at.
 Big things mean potentially tough units to take out.

:flamed: Immediately noticeable is the lack of troops, I do need to solve this, 15 more strike troops could take me up to around 2000pts.
:flamed: The list has an assortment of :waaagh:expensive :waaagh: armour.

Future:
I would like to add I librarian to this list.
Thinking of another unit of Terminators or maybe Paladins.
I am also thinking of buying another PsyRifleman dread and fielding it as an Elite VenDread.

If I had the choice to reverse time I might not have bought any power armoured marines, but now that I have them I want to give them a go. Maybe they are better than I think, maybe I'll be wanting more to solve my troop numbers problem, maybe I'll want an inquisitor and retinue to make up numbers and to hop out of the Landraider. It's all well and good if you have no points limit. Ideally though I think this force is building up to a 2000 point army, and maybe I could have a 1500 and 1750 point variant of what you have read above.

I've read around forums a lot and most Grey Knights players field a :cheese: PsyRifleman :cheese: based army or a :cheese: DraigoWing :cheese: based army with Paladin spam. If they don't they are told to. These sound cool and I'd like to incorporate both into a larger army sometime in the future, but please try to think outside of the box on this one. I would love some feedback from other players on this.

Many thanks,
Tombomb

- Your right, 12 men at 1750 isnt enough. Dont waste points on psy ammo for anything less than a 10 man squad

- Have a go with the orbital relay but I\'ve found it misses more than it hits, if you do decide to run with it lose the psy ammo

- I find the same accuracy problems with the heavy psycannon - the heavy incinerator is the most usefull dreadknight weapon

Ok here's my two penneth
First I would drop the orbital relay it rarely lands where you want it and quite often hits nothing at all.
Second I would be tempted to lose either the land raider or one of the the ravens, probably the raider, you have more vehicles than you have units to transport at the moment.

With the points you save, by my calculation 310 points you could include
5 man purifier squad in a rhino with 2 psycannon 2 halberd and 1 hammer for 189pts it's a mobile kill machine and when it pops let the purifiers reek havoc, this leaves you with 121 points
You could use this on one more dreadnought or use the points to beef up your existing units
E.g add thawn to your termie squad and stick more bodies in your purifier or strike squads.
Hope that helps and good luck brother

Thanks so much for the input brothers.
Based on your suggestions I have made some changes. See below:

1 GM -175
1 Vindicare - 145
5 Terminators - Psycannon, Halberds - 2 - 225
5 Strike Squad - Psycannon - 110
2 Storm Raven - TLMM and TLLC - 405
1 Dreadnought - TLAC, psybolt ammo - 135
1 Dreadknight - H.Incinerator - 145
1 Land Raider - Psybolt ammo - 260

Total: 1605.
Not sure if I want more power armour, terminators, some paladins or even inquisitor retinue. More men though I think.
The next thing I can do is take out the Vindicare to save a further 145 points to put towards men to take me up to 1700-1750 pts.
Should I be worried about a lack of killing power in the army?

1605 Total. Need more troops. Not played a single game so not sure if I want:
more power armour, more terminator armour, paladins with Draigo instead of GM.
With your help I'll refine this some more and it will decide what models I will be buying next!
All input is appreciated, i'm getting there!

So I decided the best thing to do was buy some more power armour troops so I've bought 5. My next plan is to buy another 5 terminators. After that it'll be another terminator squad, power armour squad (of some kind), or an inquisitor gang. I'm coming around the the idea that a land raider might not be best for a 1500-1700 game if i'm using Stormravens so I could easily fit in another 10 power armour troops which would really bolster the numbers. Grey knights could quite easily have decent numbers if you bring some strike squads. IMO if you take a 10 man GK strike squad vs a 10 man vanilla tactical squad the GK squad represents better value for money.

If you are going to stay pure then strike squads (or any power armour guys) is the way to go, more bodies.
I Have used the orbital strikes, if you have one then it is a waist, more is better (teckies). It is still not a strong weapon but like dreadknights if you have one it will not work 2 is better.

Thank you for the sound advice. I have now made another 5 man strike squad with psycannon. They were converted to hold swords from the older metal models so I have even more variation in my 10 man striker squad now. I believe you are correct about the dreadknights and orbital relay. I will look into getting another dread knights to balance it out a little better.

I'm also coming around to the idea of using my 5 man terminators as Paladins, unless I can buy another set of 5 which might happen in about 20 mins if I win my ebay auction Very Happy. I new list will be created by the weekend if my painting goes to plan, I've yet to test anything against another army.

I have bought a bunch of different tyranid models - mostly horde like troops so that should be a good test numbers wise. Will try test before the weekend and will be back with feedback Smile
