AA defence

Post by Sai on Fri Apr 06, 2012 10:18 am

The dark eldar have fighter-bombers, the necrons are waiting on the models for theirs and the space marines just got the stormeagle. It's looking like everyone will get a flier sooner or later.

What are you guys looking at for AA cover?

Mass psycannon fire will mean your storm bolters aren't shooting where they're supposed to be.
Riflemen can throw up a whole bunch of flak and move to get a bead on them I guess and most people seem to have at least a couple hanging around.

My stormraven is happily kitted out for interception with a missile launcher and lascanons but is only going to be throwing out 3 shots capable of downing most of the fliers which isn't ideal, but at least it can chase to wherever they're hiding.

Any bright ideas?

I was planning on getting a fury interceptor.

Otherwise, my warhound will probably get it, unless my warlord feels like torching some fliers.

Perhaps we're not playing the same kind of game?

Dark eldar and necrons aren't so bad, even with death rays.

10 Thunder hammer/Stormshield terminators jumping out of this though.

Happily it costs a fair bit in both points and real money. But when the rules go official it's fine for normal 40k games.
Also Chaos have them. 20 berzerkers might also be painful depending on what they charge.

I don't think a lot of people will be aiming to hide it.

If they throw it forward at full speed and park it in front of my lines it matters little whether i blow it up or not, most of those terminators are going to come swinging.

I guess in that scenario it comes down to my deployment- spreading out and keeping mobile.

Wouldn't the purgation squad be on either 8 or 16 shots? With 4 cannons?
It would be nice to see people take them rather than just purifiers if nothing else. It's a lot of points in a small lightly armoured (comparatively) unit though.

yes you're right about the number of shots ... i lost my math yesterday !! Razz Razz
and what about the justicar ? i don't remember if he can take a psycannon too (and i'm on vacation so i can't verify in my codex) ... giving the unit 10 or 20 shots with the aiming psypower ... scratch

It's a limit of 4 heavy weapons on the actual Grey Knights.

You could combine them with a stormraven to make sure they always get in range, preferably behind LOS blocking cover. Could even use shadowskies if you feel lucky.

When I started this thread the idea of zooming hadn't come up at all...

Are purgation squads still cutting it?
I'm using a stormraven for interceptor duties but otherwise I'm relying on potshots form my dreadnought and a handful of psycannon which should really be firing at other things.

I've only come up against the odd flyer or two a game, and mostly only the AV11 ones so I've had pretty good luck taking them out with a termie squad with psycannons/psybolts and Prescience. Against a very flyer heavy army, or those with AV12, I think a purg squad would be my only hope, but not a great one at that.

what about an aegis defence line with a quad gun?

and you can hide an objective in it. with a 3+ cover save.

True about the Aegis.
But half my troops are in terminator armour and the others have teleporters so the wall is only of frequent use for my 5 man strike squad. And the concept of the Grey Knight army is that they are a mobile strike force which doesn't work so well with fortifications. Admittedly there are reasons why the walls could be there. I do have a bastion that I've converted with drop pod and missile bits to make a drop-baston so I could throw a flak gun up there I guess.

As grey knights we are spoiled for choice on what we use to will deal with flyers, if they are armour 11 then a strike squad with psybolts and 2 psy cannons will deal with it (always shoot the psy cannons as heavy as you will be hitting on 6's anyway), we also have prescince, twin linked weapons coming out our you know whats (razorbacks), and rifle dreads. There is even a spell what alows all snap fire to be done at normal to hit (havent got it with me but I think it should work).

@first strike Fairly solid observations, and the bit about using the heavy profile of psycannons is something I see a lot of players missing. If I'm shooting at a flyer and have to snapshot I use that as an excuse to reposition my unit without losing any effectiveness(and it's one of the few ways I ever move my long fangs) However the power I think you're thinking of is Foreboding, but that only allows a unit to overwatch at full BS, not all snapshots so still 6's to hit fliers, but prescience does kind of make up for it.

Excellent point with the psycannon.
A good thing to remember with the Heldrake is that it's a daemon, so you're re-rolling 1s to hit in any case. It's only 1 possible enemy flier but considering the AP3 template I'll take the help. Unfortunately the valkyrie, vendetta, heldrake and stormraven all have armour 12. Probably doom scythes and night scythes as well while their shields are up, I can't remember.
In that case it will have to be purgation squads or combat squads with two psycannon, we need the rest of our stormbolters shooting infantry.

fear not! night scythes and doom scythes dont have the quantum shielding!

but yeah flyiers are annoying... as mentioned the psycannon snapfire helps a lot. aswell as psyrifle dreads or the aegis defence line with the quad gun or even the stormraven. aegis defense line with relais and the GM using psychic communion may let your stormraven arrive after the enemys flyier. and what a twin linked multimelta shot can do to a 12 AV vehicle we all know in addition to the assault cannon for example.

a little birdy told me that in the upcoming white dwarfs every army will get sooner or later some updates like the chaos daemons codex minibook update.

as far as i know eldar are first to get some few new rules though. keep fingers crossed brothers.

Bah!
I just bought the first models for my eldar army. I'm sure you meant that eldar are rubbish apart from jetbikers who are awesome and should definitely form the core of Sai's army.

The models are actually my favourite in the entire GWS range, with the old school metal GKT and the newer PAGK + NDK not far behind.
They are just massively overpriced for this addition, not even considering they were similarly overpriced last edition, prior to a few even better codexes.

I have about 15 converted jetbikes I am working on though :p

I just hope the next codex isn't a repeat of the Dark Eldar fiasco... the codex was obviously an edition out of date on release with tiny tweaks. I mean the costing on all special weapons hamstrung the army from the start, and the 'cheap' infantry is anything but. It's frustrating.

Which build? Is it the jetbikes? I was figuring on using them like the Eldar squadrons in Battlefleet Gothic- concentration of fire followed by fading back out of LoS. Just with fewer plasma torpedoes.

Talking of dark eldar- is it me or are their fighters comparatively easy to take down?
