One day RTT

Post by Rivan on Thu Feb 09, 2012 5:35 pm

Participated in a one-day RTT (Rogue Trader Tournament) at my local gaming store. It was the perfect venue to playtest my tournament list some more because 3 of the 5 missions from the GT tourney I'm going to were used. We played three 2000pt games and the player with the highest battle points score is named Best General. I'll just provide a brief summary of each game.

My List
GM w/ incinerator, sword, rad, blind, psychostroke, 2 skulls
Coteaz
Venerable psyfleman dread
10 Paladins (4 psycannons, banner, assorted weapons)
10 GKSS (2 psycannons); RB w/ TWLLC
12 Warband (8 DCAs, 3 Crusaders, 1 Mystic); RB w/ TWLLC
LRC w/ MM

First game: Vs Eldar (or footdar)

Autarch
Farseer on jetbike (runes of warding)
10 guardians w/ bright lance
10 guardians w/ bright lance
10 wraithguard w/ seer
3 Dark Reapers w/ a heavy gun (?)
10 Swooping Hawks
5 Harlequins w/ shadowseer
5 Harlequins w/ shadowseer
5 or 6 Warp Spiders
Wraithlord w/ brightlance and couple other weapons

Mission was rolled for at the start of the 3rd turn: Table quarters
Deployment: Spearhead

Opponent went first. He deployed everything except for the Hawks, Warp spiders w/ Autarch and 10 guardians. I deployed the dread and 2 RBs each w/ 5 GKSS. Pallies and HQ unit in the LRC were in reserves. The game was rather straightforward with back and forth shooting. Needless to say, I didn't use a single psychic power this game Razz I didn't really need to. By using terrain, I was pretty much able to stay safe from his brightlances. When my paladins came in, they combat squadded and DS'ed in 2 different locations. One highlight was when 5 harlequins assaulted 5 paladins. They basically bounced off and were wiped out. When my HQ squad came in, they controlled another quarter.

Final: GK's controlled 3 quarters to 1. Victory!

Second game: Vs Dark Angels (same player from my other batrep--he changed his list this time)

Belial
Chaplain
5 deathwing (apothecary, banner, 3 LC's, 2 TH/SS, 1 CML)
5 deathwing (5 TH/SS, 1 CML)
10 marines (1 melta, 1 PF); Rhino
5 marines; RB w/ TWLLC
5 marines (1 LC)
1 typhoon speeder w/ MM
1 typhoon speeder w/ MM
1 typhoon speeder w/ MM
2 vindicators
1 LRC w/ MM

This game was definitely fun because my opponent wanted some serious payback from the last time my GK's owned his DA Razz Mission was KP and deployment was pitched battle. He went first. He was able to get 4 KP. I totalled 8 KP Smile The funniest part was he made sure Belial and his deathwing squad were nowhere near my HQ/warband squad lol.

Victory!

Third game: Vs. Grey Knights

Mordrak + 5 Ghost Knights
Librarian w/ staff, and several powers
10 GKT (2 psycannons; psybolts)
5 GKSS
10 GKIS (2 incinerators)
2 psyflemen dreads
1 SR

Mission was Seize Ground w/ 5 objectives (1 in the center of the table and 1 each in the center of each table quarter). Deployment was spearhead. This game was definitely the most exciting. He rolled a 3 for grand strategy so his GKSS and 2 dreads were now scoring. I rolled a 2 so my pallies and ven dread were also scoring. Due to the deployment, we each quickly grabbed 2 each of the 4 objectives on the the 4 quarters. Only the center one would be up for grabs. The shooting was pretty much even on both sides but my ven dread outlasted his 2 regular dreads. Mine was only immobilized at the end of the game. He lost one early and the other one had no arms in the end. If anything, what really hurt my opponent was a couple of bad rolls that had compounding effects. Mordrak suffered 2 POTW wounds trying to use psychic communion. This also resulted in his SR coming in late in the game. Since I was already anticipating the SR to come in (right around turn 4), my guys were all spread out (best defense against mindstrike missiles if you're models are not embarked). I also made sure to present multiple targets to entice him to move only up to 12" to fire more than 1 weapon. I had 2 squads of pallies, 1 squad of GKSS, a LRC, a RB and a dread on the table for him to choose from. It worked Smile He chose to fire his TWLLC at the ven dread and the mindstrike missiles at 1 squad of pallies. The ven dread shook it off while the pallies took 2 wounds. Next turn, I blew the SR out of the sky. In the last turn, my HQ/warband squad assaulted his 10 GKT and libby. Needless to say, the GKTs were wiped out while the libby fell back (he had 2++ saves so he survived). He still had 1 chance to tie the game because Mordrak and 4 ghost knights were able to get the charge on my pally squad that was holding an objective. Mordrak only had 1 wound left (he took 2 from perils and 1 from my shooting). I expected my pallies to die because they were going at I1 due to psyke-out grenades. The ghost knights triggered force kill while Mordrak rolled for hammerhand--and got 2 one's! He fails his save and dies. Guess what happens to the ghost knight when Mordrak dies...they are removed as well cheers

I hold 3 objectives vs. his 2. Victory for my Grey Knights!

I scored the highest battle points and won Best General Smile and a $35 store credit.

More importantly, this list is now 6-0 and I can say I'm definitely getting more and more comfortable with it. I'm learning to move my units more efficiently to maximize synergy.

Thanks for reading Smile

Thanks Brothers. Now all I have to do is finish painting my army. I probably won't get Best Army Appearance (with the short time I have left) but I'll make sure they look good on the table top Very Happy

Congratulations Brother.

Now then, I have a question. A couple of weeks ago me and the manager at my LGS checked the rule for Psyk-out grenades. It states that it affects any Psykers in the unit assaulted.

Normally this is simple. However, do not forget out brotherhood of Psykers rule which affects our squads. This states that at any time only the Justicar is actually a Psyker, and If he is dead then it is a randomly selected model from the squad. Please check for yourself and give me you opinion; but I think that when a grey knight squad is assaulted by these grenades then it is only ever one model that is affected.

Also, how did the ghost knights activate force weapons at the same time as mordrak using hammerhand? Force weapons can only ever be attempted to be activated on the first unsaved wound, whereas hammerhand needs to occur at the start of the assault phase dosent it? I dont have my codex in front of me, but it would be worth checking as I wouldn't want you to be pulled up on it I the GT.

Not trying to detract from your victories though. Well done again.

This is actually a good question, as the codex clearly states that a unit of GKs counts a single psyker, and effects that target psykers specifically are resolved against the justicar (if he's dead a random model), so rulewise I'd have to agree that only 1 model is affected. Fluffwise it'd obviously work against all psykers (which all GK's are), but that leads to the discussion of RAI vs RAW

That is a very valid question Brother. I honestly didn't realize that's how it worked. I'll definitely ask the tourney organizers what their ruling is before the games so I know how to deal with it. Thanks!

While we're on the subject. Does that mean that when a mind strike missile hits my squad, only 1 model will get affected? So, for a paladin squad, it will be a random model?

I'll also check on the force weapon activation.

on the mindstrike missle rule. yes i do think it works that way. it is easier to hit the psyker in a brotherhood of psykers unit rather than a psyker in a normal unit. so its pretty balanced that way i guess.

Funny thing about the paladins though is that there isn't a Justicar, so it will always be a random model. We've been playing it as my unit is hit by the missile, and then we have to randomly roll to see if one of the models under the template is the Psyker. If it is, it suffers perils. If it isn't, the unit just suffers the normal effect of the missile.

I know it should affect them all RAI but RAW states otherwise, and you know that if I've spotted this, then there will be other GK players at the GT who have spotted this too. I don't want you to be caught out.

Re: One day RTT

So I'm just looking at the codec and the brotherhood of Psykers rule states

"if the grey knight unit suffers the perils of the warp, or any attack that specifically targets Psykers, it is resolved against the Justicar or knight of the flame (if he is alive) or against a random no-character model in the squad if the Justicar or knight of the flame is dead"

Simple, only one model is affected.

Also, hammerhand is used "in either players turn, after assault moves have been made, but before any blows have been struck"

Again, simple. If you don't cast it in on a squad before any combat starts, you lose out!

And finally, force weapons are activated this way - "if the unit is striking at different initiative orders, take the psychic test to 'activate' the force weapons immediately after the first unsaved wounds are caused"

So you don't take a test if you don't cause any wounds.

Re: One day RTT

Post by Rivan on Sun Feb 12, 2012 10:54 am

Thanks for the clarifications. I read it and came to understand it the same way.

So, let's say my 10 paladins are hit by 4 mind strike missiles. My opponent will obviously have to select which model the template will be centered on. He'll have to do this 4 times and then I randomly roll which one is the psyker?

For psyke-out grenades, so only 1 model (the justicar/knight of the flame) goes to I1.

These are crucial rulings because there are 6 other GK players in this GT aside from me. I'll email the tourney organizers tomorrow and find out their ruling.

@Valten: The organizers came out with their official ruling:

- psyke-out grenades affect all models in a squad

- mindstrike missiles only affect the justicar or a random model under the template

At least I know what to expect for this tourney. It actually benefits my list since I don't use a SR but my DCAs can rule when I charge a GK squad (even with halberds) as long as my GM is with them Smile

I agree. Looks like they just did it just to appease both point of views.

Funny thing though was I didn't end up playing another GK opponent Razz
