2000 tourny list

Post by MindBullet on Tue Oct 25, 2011 1:04 am

So I have a Halloween tournament comming up and I'm planning on running this list let me know what you guys think.

HQ: Draigo and Mordrak

Ghosts: 5 3 halberds, 2 hammers

Troops: 5 paladins 1 upgrade to apothecary, brotherhood banner, warding staff, psycannon, falchion, psybolt ammo. All equiped different for wound allocations

Troops: 8 Terminators, Justicar Thawn, 6 falchions, psycannon, brotherhood banner, psybolt ammo

Elite: 2 Venerable psyfle dreads

The plan is to have the dreads on the left and right sides one next to each troop to keep the aegis rules on them, using both GS abilitys to scout the troops and reroll any 1s (or scout and turn the dreads into scoring for objective games) beginning of turn 1 drop draigo mordrak and the ghosts next to any unit I need weakened or off the table. Using sanctified flame and 11 storm bolter rounds to do so. If I happen to be close enough, run and assault with the troops. And POP any tanks with the dreads. And go from there.

Don't hold back as I have no feelings.

I\'ve not added it up - is this a 2000pt list? For me 22 models is lacking at 2000pts

On the plus side you will do very well in kill point games though there is far more chance of you drawing an objective game and with only 2 troops choices you will struggle.

Im not 100% sure you can make the dreads scoring as vehicles cannot be scoring units (unless you have a troops choice inside of course) - knights are monstrous creatures which allows them to take objectives. Maybe a wiser man than me can clarify this hunch.

As anyone who has read a thread of mine on this forum will know I have a personal dislike for Apothecaries in Palladin squads, they are expensive for the marginal reward they give you even in a 10 man squad. I would never include one and especially not in a 5 man unit.

A point of personal preference - I prefer paying 135pts for my dreads, at that price they are a bargain. I know there is a school of thought saying vens are worth their points because they last longer but you could save 100pts by using the regular incarnation instead with no loss of initial firepower.

Cutting out the apoth and downgrading the dreads you would have 175pts spare to add something though to be honest this list wouldnt frighten me too much - kill the terminators to ruin your objective taking and ignore Draigo until my interceptors contest his objective late in the game and I have the win.

In my humble opinion you are ignoring some of the better choices in the codex - Purifiers, Interceptors, Henchman.

The core of my own list is as follows:

Draigo
5 Palladins (no apoth, no falchons, no warding staff)
10 interceptors
2 psy dreads (non venerable)
Dreadknight with personal teleporter

This leaves me 600 points to decide on my second 10 man troops choice and another HQ. I guess it comes down to what models you have.

Just my opinion, by no means anymore valid than yours. Good luck in the tournament.

Thanks brother,
I'm not saying I will not take your advice, but here is my reasoning for thinking I need what I took. GS works for Walkers. So I do get 4 scoring units. I know 1 of the other 7 teams is going to be infantry IG (he believes number of models will win the day) hence the apoth. And if my plan works out the way I want it to the only thing my opponent can shoot will be the GM unit or my dreads. AP I made them Venerable.

But now that you point it out that's 100 points per model.. I may have to change something up. And yes this equals out to 2000 on the dot.

First and formost, yes you give walkers(dreadnoughts) bonuses from grand stragegy. However, you can only give any unit one bonus from grand stragey, regardless of howmany GMs you have. I am on the fence with regards to the Apoc, but I feel it is a waste of points to give a banner to a unit of 5. You could drop Thawn and just use that model as a paladin and maybe add one more to paladin to that squad to get your money's worth out of the psybolt ammo. On that note, you can have up to two heavy weapons in a paladin squad, so I would take advantage of that also. Well good luck, and happy halloween!

Taking down hundreds of guardsmen with this many models would be brilliant, Draigo is good enought to build his own mountain out of IG bodies.

Let us know how it goes, I like the idea of two grand masters and would be interested to know how it plays.

If you dont want me to pull punches, here it is.....

I think the list shows some thought, but will get tabled a lot. You're trying to cram in too much. Mordrak and his unit wont even kill a 5 man squad when they show up, and can be kited around for a bit. Yes they're tough to crack, but when an opponent can just throw a 5 man squad in to distract them and shoot them with his entire army 2 turns in a row..... they die easy. and you don't have enough damage in the rest of your list to warrant shooting at (8 s8 shots, 8 s7, some bolter rounds)

You then have a split force of two somewhat weak sides (roughly 9 wouds of 2+ 5+ and a dread per side)

I think if you really want to persue this kind of list, which has promise, it's similar to the draigowing from the top final table at nova, you have to stop looking at shinies and start putting some punch in. Drop the mordrak combo, as you don't have the followup punch that list needs. Mordrak is a tough distraction, but you need some pressue to put on to make him worth it, and your list doesn't have anything fast or dangerous enough to make them have to make a bad choice of mordrak or the rest of your list. They just throw a unit as a screen and kill him, then turn on your army.

Get some mobility. if you dont have tanks, you need a ton of scoring units. if you dont have tanks or numbers, you need teleporters, to jump on something last turn or get to areas your limited shooting can't reach.

5 paladins wont die to bolters. They will die to the amount of s8 almost every army in the game can bring to bear on that 5 man squad, which is now the only unit left worth targeting in your army. I'd ditch apotecary and the banner. the banner isn't a power weapon, so your only gaining 1-2 attacks by the banner.

Use these points aand trim some more fat to either get min units to deep strike and score, teleporting units, more psycannons, or something with some threat or resilience.

If you need inspiration, heres blackmoores army http://blackmoors40k.blogspot.com/2011/09/nova-open-game-3-blackmoor-vs-farmpunk.html

Just know small model count lists like this take LOTS and LOTS of finesse. It takes a TON of games to know just when to rush in, when to hold back, and it takes a very tactical mind. expect a lot of losses before you can come to terms with the type of play these lists require.

I like the list idea and I have all but the libby (was stolen when I went to a hobby store because GW was closed) and 1of 3 dreads... But the main reason I am steering away from GKSS or intercepters is every time the take a wound I seem to fail the saves and die... And have over kill luck on 2+ 5+ ..

I have been talking with a few more of the guys about what they are bringing, seems there will be a Nid army with a prime and swormlord with gaunt spawns and stealers.. a DA army mainly bikes and speeders ( my biggest threa, I think?) 2 daemon armys, the infantry IG and I'm looking into the others..

Now that you pointed out the banner only giving 1-2 extra I may drop it and add an extra psycannon.
Thanks for the reply
