Assassins worth it?
Greetings Brothers,
as stated i'm wondering where everyone stands on assassins. I'm currently running pure GK usually around 2k but find times where that one person in a squad or an IC is really annoying me and would LOVE to have an assassin
thinking about picking up a cheap Inquisitor and vindicare assassin
thoughts?
thanks in advance brothers

I agree with DonFer that the most usefull assassin currently is the Vindicare.
But when that is said, he plays just like the other assassins. Do not expect him, to earn his points back, i very many games. He is first and foremost a distraction that you enemy has to deal with, leaving room for the rest of your army. But when you enemy puts his mind to it - he is dead as the dodo.

I'm inclined to agree that the assassins main value is in drawing fire.

I think after our update, they are completly useless. Including the Vidicare. The main reasoning being they cant outflank anymore, so they are walking the whole time. Its a free kill point for the enemy and an extra 100+ points i could have used better elsewhere.

I don't think you need a Inq any more to take an assassin.
The Vindicare is alright, but I feel that he has too few shots a game, particularly considering stuff needs to be in range etc.
He can of course have a huge effect or almost none!
I personally like the Callidus, he is perfect against heavy weapon teams, and depending on your opponents placement of models could do some major damage, although he is unlikely to survive long!

Re: Assassins worth it?
Assassins are just that: one shot tricks. If you are running on foot with Crowe, an Eversor might be useful, but then you've got purifiers for combat anyway.
You no longer need to take an inquisitor to get an assassin, but your points would be better spent on a henchman squad with Jokaero and bullet soaks (especially in comparison to a Vindicare) I'd recommend modeling them as special servitors if you're puritanically inclined.
The Callidus might be useful with psychic communion to time her entry, but as stated above will rarely earn her points back. Can serve as a nifty distraction if she survives the first round of combat (since a whole unit or 2 will have to shoot at her).

Since Grey knights have been given power weapons and we have deathcult assassins in our codex i dont see assassins being as effective as they could be, in comparison to these options.

My fave assassin used to be the Callidus but since they changed her polymorphine rule she is next to useless - I dont want to appear next to the squad I want to get one automatic kill by having infiltrated it before the battle - but the worst part is entering by non scattering deepstrike so she can't assault on her first turn! She strips off to her sexy black synskin...... and waits to get shot.

So let me get this straight, people are willing to take a lazcannon on a dreadknought that is str 9 ap 2. But not willing to take the vindicare with str 3 4d6 armor pen with rending......Too few shots? The same as any other major anti-tank weapons and with more versatility over all. Not to mention being able to use his ammo in his pistol for when he needs to fall back, make people think twice when their HQ gets sniped from a falling back vindicare.

Re: Assassins worth it?
Just got back from a game vs my brothers mechdar, my vindicare was one of only 4 kill points I conceeded at 2000pts - its only target's were wave serpents which dont allow additional penetration dice much like the the monolith. It died before it could hit anything else.
Maybe not the place for a breakdown of the game but hey-ho
MVP's go to:
Interceptor squad - 2 kill pts
Dreadknight - 2 kill pts
Draigo + Palladins - 3 kill pts
My bro was trying out warp hunters by proxying some falcons - Draigo survived 4 D-Cannon rift hits, 10 fire dragons and 5 dire avenger's unloading in his face and instant killed Yriel who was foolish enough to charge him - needless to say his 5 man Palladin bodyguard didnt fare so well.
4-8 to the Knights who say Ni

Re: Assassins worth it?
You used the vindicare incorrectly. He doesn't get bonus dice with turbo penetrator it does 4d armor pen, the only thing that it wouldn't do against say a monolith would be rend.

He didn't use him incorrectly, the eldar rule is very specific: "In addition all ranged attacks never roll more than +1D6 for their armour penetration" Also the monolith thing is kind of debatable and everyone knows it so need to to bring it up here.
Back on topic, I agree the vindi is the best of the assassins, his ability to nail tough vehicles or pick out those pesky powerfists/meltas before they obliterate your expensive GK is amazing. The only other assassin I might consider is the Eversor, since he can get a bunch of lightning claw attacks on the charge, the problem is the loss of the 12" charge rangbe is kind of huge, and losing some of his old rules takes away the flavour(remember he exploded on death lol). The other two psykers I don't really rate, the Culexus has always been too list-tailory for me, only really shines when you know you're facing a psyker heavy army. As for the poor Callidus, she got gimped beyond comprehension, no longer being able to assault when she arrives means she'll get shot to pieces in seconds, a 4+/4++ and her waste-of-space version of FNP(really a 6+? anyone else think this is a reaction to the whining about BA getting FNP out the wazoo?) is not enough to keep her alive.

While i agree that vindicare might be not that useful against eldar, but eldar are quite possibly the worst army to fight gk's right now, with their low armor vehicles and lack of power armor they get chewed up nicely from psycannon and storm bolter fire. I also agree that the only assassin to take is vindicare and maybe the culexus, especially if you fight other gk army's or really any of the highly popular armies currently; SW, BA, GK.

I kind of think a Culexus v other GK is a bad idea, you only get +1 shot per squad, so between your guys and the enemy you'll get maybe 4 bonus shots, and after that the sheer amount of return firepower will splat the culexus horribly, it only takes around 5 stormbolters to do it IIRC.
