All GK list vs Space Puppies Round 2

Post by Rivan on Fri Jul 22, 2011 12:22 am

After the SW were humiliated last game, Kyrox made some adjustments and was eager for some payback. I also made a slight adjustment from my last list just to have more Interceptors.

SW List
HQ - WL w/ thunderwolf, frost blade, SS, runic armor, wolf tooth necklace, wolf tail talisman & Saga of the Bear
HQ - RP w/ living lightning, JOTWW & chooser of the slain
EL - 4 x TWC (1 vanilla, 1 w/ PF, 1 w/ SS, 1 w/ SS & melta bombs)
EL - 5 x Wolf Guard (4 w/ PF and combi-melta, 1 w/ TDA and CML -- they split up to join separate units)
EL - 5 x Wolf scouts (1 melta gun)
TR - 7 x GH (1 melta, 1 mark of the wulfen, wolf standard); rhino
TR - same
TR - same
TR - 5 x GH (1 melta); RB w/ TWLLC
FA - Land speeder w/ MM
HS - 5 x long fangs (2 lascannons, 3 ML)
HS - same

GK List
HQ - GM w/ m-c NWS, 'cinnie, digital weapons, rad, PS, 3 skulls
EL - 7 x Paladins (1 pcannon, 1 'cinnie, banner, NWS, hammer, assorted weapons)
TR - 10 x GKSS (2 pcannons, 1 hammer, psybolts)
TR - 5 x GKSS (1 pcannon)
FA - 10 x GKIS (2 pcannons, psybolts)
FA - 5 x GKIS (1 'cinnie)
FA - SR
HS - LRC

Mission/Deployment: Annihilation/Pitched battle
I rolled for GS, getting a 5, and gave HoR to my Paladins, 10-man interceptors & 10-man GKSS. I won the roll-off and decided to take first turn.
Deployment: I deployed LRC w/ embarked HQ center of the board while the 10-man GKIS deployed to my left, also at the 12" line. Both GKSS squads will DS while SR and 5-man GKIS will come in from reserves (board edge). He deployed both LF units center of his zone while the RB and 1 rhino (w/ priest) deployed to his right.

He attempted to seize initiative and GOT IT! Evil or Very Mad (am I thankful I decided to keep the SR in reserve Razz )
SW Turn 1 - He didn't really move and just decided to shoot. RB and LF squad w/ WG in TDA fired at the LRC and failed to penetrate. The other LF squad shot the interceptors and killed 1.

GW Turn 1 - I sped the LRC 12" straight towards the LF and popped smoke. The interceptors shunted to the middle of the board and shot the smaller LF squad but only killed 2 and they passed leadership. **Mistake #1: I should have gone for the RB for the easier KP**

SW - 0 GK - 0

SW Turn 2 - His TWC w/ WL came in as well as 1 rhino. The smaller LF squad moved and ran to his right to make way for the TWC. The other LF squad and the RB shot the LRC again and again everything bounced off. The TWC ran and assaulted the interceptors, wiping them out.

GK Turn 2 - My SR and the 10-man GKSS came in, both toward the right side of my board (SR moving flat-out from the board edge while the GKSS DS'ed near a skull). The LRC went around the center terrain and HQ squad disembarked right in front of the TWC while the LRC shot the RB and stunned it. **I really wanted to go for the LF unit but estimated that I probably won't make assault range**
Combined fire from the SR and the GKSS immobilized and stunned his rhino. My HQ squad shot the TWC and managed to kill one and put a wound on the WL. They then piled into assault. I rolled a 2 for PS grenades and scored auto-hits. The TWC were wiped out at initiative 6. My GM put 3 wounds on the WL of which he save 2 while he scored 1 wound and GM blocked it w/ the NWS. **Mistake #2: I wasn't paying attention in how I piled my HQ squad in. My Initiative 4 guys and hammer weren't able to attack because only the GM was in base contact w/ the WL. Mistake #3: I forgot about my GM's digital weapons -- could've scored another wound. His WL failed morale and fell back and I consolidated.

SW - 1 GK - 1

SW Turn 3 - His last rhino came in as well as his Wolf scouts (who outflanked and came in behind my SR and GKSS squad). The rhino that came in sped 12" and popped smoke. The RB also popped smoke. The smaller LF squad shot my GKSS and killed 2. The larger LF squad shot my SR and scored 3 pens. However, I made all 3 cover saves! cheers The scouts fired w/ a melta and combo-melta scoring 1 pen and I made my cover save again Smile Alas, the WP cast JOTWW and hit my GM and 1 paladin. The paladin made it but I rolled a 6 for the GM! Evil or Very Mad
The scouts multi-assaulted my SR and GKSS, killing 3 and failing to pen w/ the PF. My GKSS wiped them out in return.

--camera died at this point so no more pics, sorry--

GK Turn 3 - My 5-man interceptors came in from the board edge on my far left corner. Paladins and LRC moved a little bit to get clear LOS on the the WL. The 5 survivors of the large GKSS squad embarked in the SR and SR moved flat-out towards the center of my zone. Paladins shot and killed the WL. LRC shot the rhino w/ the wolf priest, exploding it and killing 1 hunter (they passed their pinning test). SR shot the immobilized rhino but only shook it.

SW - 2 GK - 4

SW Turn 4 - His LS came in from the board edge on his far left to hide behind one of the ruins. The hunters w/ the priest moved towards the paladins. The hunters in the nearby rhino disembarked as well. The hunters in the immobilized rhino on the far end disembarked and started hoofing it to where the action is. Combined shooting from the GH (w/ 3 melta shots) and the RB killed 3 paladins. His LF shot and scored a couple pens on the SR but only shook and stunned it. One GH squad (who only shot w/ pistols) assaulted the paladins and ended up in tied combat (I killed 4 while he killed 1 and put 2 wounds on the other 2 paladins).

GK Turn 4 - My 5-man GKSS finally came in and I DS'd them near a skull, within shooting range of the priest's squad. The 5 interceptors shunted right next to the priest's squad as well. The SR moved flat out again towards my left side of the board. While the LRC stayed put and trained its guns on the priest's squad as well. Combined shooting from the interceptors, the GKSS and LRC managed to kill the priest and whittle the squad down to 1 guy (w/ the melta). This was actually very poor shooting rolls on my part. It forced me to fire the SR's TWLLC to take out the last guy and what do you know, I rolled a 2 followed by another 2 Sad The paladins killed 2 more hunters and the remaining 2 GH fell back.

SW - 2 GK - 5

SW Turn 5 - Kyrox catches up w/ very good shooting this turn. His lone hunter w/ the melta (yes, the one I tried so hard to kill), runs up to the LRC and blows it up spectacularly. The paladins were shot up by the long fangs as well as the speeder and the 2 GH that were falling back but I make good invul and armor saves and lose only 1 paladin. The RB manages to pen the SR and I finally fail my cover save and it gets blown out of the sky. The 5-man squad from the RB disembarked and shot and assaulted my 5 man interceptors. I killed 2 while he killed 1. He passed leadership for locked combat.

GK Turn 5 - My 5 surviving GKSS that disembarked from the blown SR shot and killed the GH that destroyed the LRC. My interceptors that were locked in combat w/ the hunters manages to wipe the GH out. The 5 man GKSS shoots the 2 hunters that were falling back but they make their armor saves. The 2 remaining paladins assault a nearby rhino but fails to pen or glance.

SW - 4 GK - 7

Kyrox rolls and game continues...

SW Turn 6 - RB, speeder and long fangs finally shoot the paladins down. Small long fangs shoot the 5-man GKSS but good cover saves on my part result in only 1 killed. The larger long fang unit score 10 wounds on the 5 GKSS from the SR but I make 8 saves for only 2 dead Smile

GK Turn 6 - Interceptors try to destroy the RB but fail. 5-man GKSS shoots a rhino, 1 psycannon bolt hits, pens and explodes it! The 5 GKSS from the SR (w/ psybolts) shoot the speeder but the speeder makes its cover saves.

SW - 5 GK - 8

Kyrox rolls and game ends. Victory for the GK's cheers

-Turned out to be a very nice game that could've ended with a win or either of us.
-Good and bad rolling definitely dictated the overall results of the game but I'm more upset with the elementary mistakes I made.
-Pleasantly surprised my SR lasted until turn 5 Razz
-The unlucky loss of the GM was quite demoralizing but at least he was around to take down his deathstar unit before he got sucked up by the ground lol.
-Again, PS grenades are just devastating (as long as you don't roll a 1 of course).

very good batrep. The only thing I would say is overuse of abbreviations (LRC, HS etc) actually makes it longer to read rather than shorter. I know it's a long slog to write it out but it's a small thing that makes a big difference for people reading it.

Congrats on your win!

@Aubec: He actually does know how to use his Wolves well. He used to actually tally more wins over me when I was using Salamanders, Black Templars and the our 3rd ed DH codex. It's all about the match up. Prior to our new codex, it was hard to find an answer to a wolf lord leading a TWC, specially when you have to worry about 10+ missile launchers coming your way. The reverse is true now w/ our new codex. He can't match up to my HQ unit. Even w/o psychostroke grenades, a GM + paladin unit can take his TWC and WL down. P/S grenades just makes it even easier w/ almost no casualty on my part. If my GM didn't go down to JOTWW, he wouldn't have dated assault w/ his Grey hunters Razz

@Corennus: Yeah, apologize for that. Need to refrain from using too many acronyms Smile

EDIT: One thing I've noticed on a drawback w/ the SR: I wasn't even able to fire my defensive weapons because I had to keep moving flat-out every time just to get a cover save. That's the only reason my SR survived longer. But I wasn't able to fire more than weapon at a time.
