Report to Ordo Malleus High Council from Inquisitors Thoth and Varlen, Segmentum Pacificus Alpha level.

Yaga Majoris III, the site of an ongoing Waagh by Warboss Skullsmasha and his army of Deffskulls.
The Prognosticators of the Grey Knights warned that several icons to the Chaos God Khorne had been unearthed by the fighting, and the slaughter the orks were perpetrating could be enough to activate the icons and allow a daemon army through.
Some radical Malleus inquisitors argued that this would be fortuitous as the daemons could destroy the orks, or the Orks could destroy the daemons, but the Grand Masters of the Grey Knights declared they could not sit idly by and allow such a thing to happen. With the Waagh on the planet at such a large scale only a small team of Grey Knights and Inquisitors would be able to penetrate the system and close down the icons.

A special strike force was selected for the mission, made up of renowned Malleus Inquisitors Varlen and Thoth, both experts at shutting down Chaos artefacts.
With them went:
Inquisitorial Retinues of 2 jokaero, 2 servitors w/ plasma cannons and the inquisitors’ personal acolytes Juanez and Ricarios.

3 5 man purifier squads with halberds and 2 psycannons in each squads, travelling in Rhinos.

2 10 man Strike Squads, with 2 psycannons in each squad, travelling in Rhinos

3 t-l autocannon psyammo enchanced dreadnoughts.

Taking the fastest ship docked at Titan at that time, “Herald of the Emperor”, the small force hurtled towards Yaga Majoris III

Once there, the team managed to make planetfall, though their strike cruiser was forced to leave the system after several near detections by ork star patrols.
With their orbital support gone, the team quickly hid their Thunderhawks and set out in their Rhinos across the wartorn landscape, the Dreadnoughts running alongside them.
Soon they came to a barren plain where standing like a watchful monolith stood a massive stone icon to Khorne. Even from a kilometre away the Grey Knights and Inquisitors could feel the evil power locked in the traitorous sigils carved into the rock.
Quickly deploying the Grey Knight force surrounded the Icon, chanting chaticisms of detestation to shut down the Chaotic energy within it. All through the night they worked, until finally the Icon stopped glowing softly and became merely rock.
Dawn was near rising, and the Grey Knights prepared to leave, thankful their presence had gone undetected, a rumble of engines overhead put paid to their feeling of relief.
A squadron of deffkoptas screamed over the Grey Knights position, before wheeling around and blasting back towards the north.
From the north, over the hill of the valley came a hoarde of orks.

Quickly the Grey Knights embarked into their rhinos, attempting to depart the area as quickly as possible, but a mass of missiles from the deffkoptas managed to bring down a massive load of boulders over the path of the valley out.....
The Grey Knights were forced to turn and fight...

They slowly moved back up the plain, the dreadnoughts and inquisitors moving to the east to take advantage of the raised hill while the purifiers and strike squads rhinos advanced in line abreast...

Deployment: Dawn of War
Mission: Annihilation.

Ork Forces:
2 Big Meks w/ boss poles, custom megablasters, Kustom Force Fields
5 nobz in mega armour w/ bosspole and power klaws
Ork Trukk w/ missile launcher and Red Paint
4 30 ork strong boyz squads: 2 with 3 rokkits, 2 with 3 big shootas
4 deffkoptas
Initiative: Grey Knights!

Deployment:
The Grey Knights hung back, not opting to bring in one HQ and 2 troops as overwhelming firepower was needed to blunt the ork force advance.
The orks depoyed one big mek with 2 boyz units nearly in the middle of the plain...

Turn 1: Grey Knights
Movement
Steeling themselves the Grey Knight force walked on, with the Inquisitors and their retinues taking position on the hill to the far southeast with the dreadnoughts in front of them providing them cover.
The rhinos trundled on in the centre of the plain, preparing psycannons for a broadside....
Shooting
Having Moved on the Inquisitors and retinues were unable to fire so they looked on coldly, using their targeting matrices to plot future firing solutions. The Dreadnoughts had no such problem and quickly opened up with their autocannons. 6 shots hit the orks, with 4 dying as the Kustom Force Field shimmered and failed to save all the incoming fire.
The Purifiers and Strike Squads opened up next, their pyscannons turned to Assault setting. 20 Psycannons shots slammed into the ork lines, with 13 hitting. However the Big Mek had fiddled with the setting on his force field and only 5 orks were taken down by the high strength cannons.
The Rhinos added their storm bolters to the fusillade and managed to take down another 3 from the lead boyz squad...
The Orks had weathered the first storm of shooting and now looked to murder the Grey Knights encroaching on their turf.

Turn 1: Orks
Movement
The lead squad, now down by 12 orks, leapt forwards, while the squad behind surged around the now dead Icon of Khorne. The Big Mek, seeing how powerful the psycannons were, and still not happy with his Kustom Force Field, decided to leave the front Boyz squad and move into the rear boyz squad.
From the north of the valley an Ork Trukk rumbled on to the northwest, and to the northeast 2 ork boyz squads, with another Big Mek , walked into sight of the Grey Knights.
Shooting
The lead boyz squad, with their rokkits, targeted the Purifier Rhino closest to them. WHOOSH, they fired the launchers laughing maniacally. Then started swearing when the rokkits started cartwheeling away in all directions but the Rhino.
The Big Mek behind levelled his Custom Megablaster at the same rhino and pulled the trigger. Click. Nothing Happened. Swearing at the top of his lungs he mashed the safety off and smashed the gun on the boy next to him for good measure.
The boyz unit to the north with the big mek aimed their rokkit launchers at the closest dreadnought and managed to glance it. The dreadnought was stunned and shaken as the smoke cleared.

TURN 2: Grey Knights
The Dreadnought steeled itself, and all along its armour silver runes glowed and lightning crackled. Systems came back online, and it whirred its autocannons to aim at the boyz who had shaken it.
Movement:
The Grey Knights stayed put, preparing a devastating broadside.
Shooting
The Dreadnoughts turned their autocannons on the far boyz squad with the rokkit launchers. 12 shots rang out, with 7 hitting, and 6 wounding. However the second Big Mek’s Kustom Force Field was covering the squad sufficiently to nullify 4 of those wounds! The Dreadnoughts stamped their feet in frustration.
The Inquisitors seeing this ordered their retinues to open fire on the Big Mek. The Jokaeros fired their lascannons, managing to score 2 wounds on the hulking ork, but the Kustom Force Field nullified one, and the huge ork picked up a hapless Boy next to him to use as an orky shield to absorb the other shot!
The 2 servitors opened up with their plasma cannons, ordered to thin the ranks of the mob around the Big Mek. The shots were on target and a massive eruption of superheated gas blasted groups of orks, but the Kustom Force Field managed to save 3 out of 7 of the roasted aliens.
Finally the 2 inquisitors took aim at the Big Mek with their Hellrifles. Twin darts of daemon shard sped towards the ork, but dropped to the ground in front of him as the Kustom Force Field shimmered around him.
The Psycannons of the Purifiers and Strike Squads spoke next. Turned to Heavy Setting the air was filled with 40 psycannon shells as the Grey Knights opened up from their Rhinos. Orks from the first rank disappeared in swathes as the Kustom Force Field was unable to keep up with the firepower pouring into it. After the smoke cleared and the Rhinos’ storm bolters had finished firing, only 7 orks from the front rank still stood, with 11 broken bodies around them.
The Purifiers and Strike Squads then closed the hatches and prepared for the Ork onslaught that was sure to follow.

Orks: Turn 2
Movement
Incensed by the Grey Knights’ onslaught the Big Meks wasted no time in ordering their squads forwards.
The depleted front squad nearest the Rhinos (still with their 3 rokkit boyz) moved 2” forward to allow the rear squad to clear the Icon.
Across to the east the Rokkit squad advanced up on to a small hillock to have better views of the distant rhinos...
And to the west the Trukk moved flat out 19” to near the Icon of Khorne

Shooting
The Ork Boyz in the front squad, mindful of the firepower before them, made extra sure their rockkits were properly loaded this time. Aiming at the lead Purifier tank they let fly, and watched with glee as the rhino’s storm bolter was ripped off and the tracks of the vehicle were smashed. One Rhino Immobilised.
The Big Mek, now sure his megablaster would work, fired at the rhino to the left of the immobilised one, and managed to take its storm bolter clean off. Across the field the other rokkit squad aimed its rokkits at one of the strike squad rhinos and unleashed them. The Rhino shook about as the missiles hit, but no lasting damage was inflicted.

TURN 3: Grey Knights
The Stunned and shaken rhino cast its Fortitude power and rumbled back to life.
Movement
Opening the hatches the Grey Knights decided it was time to fan out. The two non-immobilised Purifier rhinos moved 6” to the west, and the 2 strike squad rhinos moved 6” to the east. The 2 Strike Squads disembarked, their Justicars judging the time to be right to meet the orks in close combat.
Shooting
The two Strike Squads poured Psycannons (assault mode) and storm bolters into the first ork squad, managing to eradicate only three more orks due to the Big Mek’s Force Field.
Two of the Purifier squads fired their pyscannons (in assault mode) into the Big Mek, but he did his orky shield trick again, ending with 2 more dead boyz.
The third Purifier squad meanwhile, spied the trukk heading round the Icon to the Grey Knights’ west. Aiming their psycannons they fired, and the trukk went spinning out of control and crashing into the ground, a mass of metal and leaking fuel. From the ruins of the ork vehicle stomped out 5 annoyed Meganobz.
Over to the west, once again, the Inquisitors and Dreadnoughts fired at the Big Mek over to the north, but could not bring him down, scoring only 5 more dead orks.
Assault
The two strike squads charged, determined to make a real dent in the ork forces, since the Force Fields were proving to be a match for the Knights’ superior firepower
Charging in, calling on their psychic power Hammerhand to empower them, both Strike Squads struck the ravaged 6 man ork squad like a battering ram. Nemesis Force Swords hacking and slashing, the combat was bloody but brief, and the Knights faced the approaching 2 ork squads with grim determination...

TURN 3: ORKS
Movement
The Ork Deffkoptas, who up till now had been wheeling around the valley voxing for reinforcements, came screeching on to the battlefield.
The ork squad with the second Big Mek moved 6” closer to the Strike Squads, and the remaining Rokkit squad followed behind. The other Big Mek moved his squad with murder in his eyes towards the strike Squads.
Shooting
The Deffkoptas opened fire on the third dreadnought. 4 missiles slammed into it, and one autocannon was ripped off, leaving the dreadnought shaken.
The other rokkit squad fired on the strike squad nearest them. Three of Justicar Lucifius’ squad were blown apart by the Str 8 rokkits.
The second Big Mek’s squad opened up with 3 Big Shootas, the Mek’s Megablaster, and 44 shoota shots.....
Lucifius’ squad bucked and swayed as the orks’ surprisingly good shooting inflicted a massive 22 hits, of which 9 wounded. The Grey Knights’ thick armour stopped 4 of the shots, but 5 of Lucifius’ squad fell dead.
Assault
Justicar Aurelius could only watch as Luficius’ squad was overrun by the marauding ork squads. Both Ork Big Meks and their squads managed to engage Lucifius’ squad and proceeded to wipe the Knights out. Even with the power weapons of the Grey Knights felling orks left and right the combined attacks of both squads cleaved their Aegis armour and rent them in two.
Only Lucifius and brother Jerome managed to break away from the carnage, the Justicar’s superior skill keeping the orks at bay while he half dragged half staggered with Jerome back 6” The Orks couldn’t catch them.

The Ork squads consolidated, with the front squads heading for the remaining Strike Squad, while the other moved to the east to hit one of the empty rhinos..

TURN 4: Grey Knights

The loss of Strike Squad Lucifius was a big blow to the Grey Knights, and it seemed Aurelius would suffer the same fate. The Purifiers had a choice now. Support the Strike Squad or try and kill the Meganobz....
Movement
The decision made, the western-most Purifier squad disembarked from their Rhino and moved 6” towards the Meganobz.
The 2 remaining Purifier Rhinos stayed where they were to add some Psycannon firepower to the strike squads.
The Strike Squad Rhinos moved this turn. One moving 6” up to block the rear ork squad advance, and another moving westward over towards the dreadnoughts.
The Dreadnoughts, re-adjusting their senses to track the ork squads, moved 6” up to be able to target the rear of the ork squads...

Shooting
Across to the east the dreadnoughts and inquisitors tended to the threat of the deffkoptas. 2 plasma cannons fired, with one scattering into the Big Mek leading the second boyz squad, causing 2 boyz to die for their Mek master. The other landed on target, annihilating 2 deffkoptas in one massive blast.
The Jokaeros, who until now hadn’t had much luck with their lascannons now targeted the deffkoptas with relish, sending out ruby beams of destructive light into the koptas the first plasma cannon had scattered from, and managed to destroy one.
Inquisitor Thoth, sighting down his hellrifle, pressed the trigger, and sent a daemon splinter hurtling into the ork body of the last deffkopta pilot, making him explode violently.
Back in the centre of the battlefield the most western Purifier squad raised their stormbolters and psycannons and opened fire on the Meganobz. One of the armoured giants crashed to the ground, with another sustaining a wound.
Across from this the remaining strike squad steadied themselves and raised their storm bolters, along with their brother Purifiers raising their psycannons to fire at the massed hoardes of orks before them.
A hail of fire smashed into the ork across both squads. Out of 28 shots 20 hit, causing a massive 17 wounds, but the double Kustom Force Fields on the Big Meks negated all but 7.
Assault
Knowing they were going to their doom, but determined to protect the transports, the Strike Squad of Justicar Aurelius charged into the mass ranks of orks. Casting Hammerhand, they set about the orks in front of them, felling a mighty 12 of them! But with more than 20 wounds in return the squad went down still striking out with their Nemesis Weapons and shouting detestatations.
The Ork squad consolidated towards the Purifier Rhinos.

Across from there the Purifiers under Knight of the Flame Atros charged into combat with the Meganobz. Casting Cleansing Flame the white hot inferno engulfed the huge Orks.....but only the one with the wound already on him fell.
Subsequently the halberds of the Purifiers failed to wound enough and 3 meganobz, one wounded but still fighting, struck back and managed to kill the entire squad!

TURN 4: Orks
Movement
The depleted but still potent second unit of orks, which had just killed the second Strike Squad with the big mek leading them, moved onwards, bearing down on Lucifius and Jerome, with 13 orks left in the squad the orks were in a perfect position to crush the enemy.
The squad behind them moved to the rhino blocking their advance, while the remaining squad of orks still at reasonable strength moved down to target the easternmost rhino.

The Meganobz, clunking and lumbering, moved to within 2” of the Rhino of the Purifiers they had just torn limb from limb, seeking to rip open its adamantium chassis.

Shooting
The Big Mek in the front ork squad, knowing nothing but his megablaster could hurt the Rhinos, took aim at the one on his left next to the previously immobilised rhino, and fired. The Rhino’s tracks were blown off, leaving it immobilised and vulnerable.
Behind them the remaining rokkit boyz squad fired on the easternmost rhino, wrecking it!
Assault
The front ork squad charged, multi-charging the two immobilised rhinos AND lucifius and Jerome!
The Big Mek decided to hit the rhino he’d immobilised, leaving the Nob in the unit to hit the other with his Power Klaw. The rest of the squad to the left of the squad engaged Lucifius and Jerome, forcing them to fight and die to mass axe attacks
The Big Mek and Nob assaulted the rhinos, causing one to explode (and take out 4 boyz!) and wrecked the other. The Purifiers inside suffered no casualties, and stalked out, their halberds glowing with power and wrath....
The Meganobz crashed into the westernmost Rhino, their powerklaws ripping into the adamantium armour easily. It was a smoking wreck within seconds.
TURN 5: Grey Knights

Movement
The Orks had exacted a fearsome toll on the Grey Knight Forces, and now the Purifier Forces of Knights of the Flame Galen and Ortho were faced with a lot of angry orks around them. Still they felt no fear, being fearless they couldn’t be pinned and therefore set about the enemy around them with grim determination.
Purifier squad Ortho moved to engage the Meganobz, with Purifier Squad Galen supporting them.
Meanwhile the dreadnoughts decided it was time to take the fight to the orks, with Honoured Brother Jonas missing an autocannon he was itching to exact payback for his damage.
Shooting
Inquisitors Thoth and Varlen, knowing that the situation was precarious, ordered their retinues to fire at the rearmost ork squad to try and kill the second Big Mek.
They succeeded in killing 4 more orks...
Then the Dreadnoughts opened fire, 10 t-l autocannon shots slamming into the rear ork lines, with 5 wounds ripping orks apart.
The Purifiers of Squad Galen levelled their psycannons and storm bolters at the other Big Mek squad, firing on heavy setting. 4 psycannon rounds and 6 stormbolter rounds hit the ork lines, obliterating 3 more orks as the KFF failed to save all the incoming fire.
Purifier Squad Ortho raised their own weapons, in Assault mode, and fired into the meganobz. 1 crashed to the ground blown open by a psycannon round, another was wounded in a storm of shots...
Assault
The Dreadnoughts, having moved so they were 6” from the rear ork squad charged (at least 2 of them did, Honoured Brothers Jonas and Kurgen lumbering into the assault while Honoured Brother Litigarus kept an eye on the horizon)
Striking at Str 6, the dreadnoughts still managed to mash some 4 orks between them for no damage in return...
Purifier Squad Ortho smashed into the Meganobz, casting Cleansing Flame as they did so. The white hot flames took a wound off each of the remaining Orks....then Ortho demonstrated why his squad was considered an elite among the elite. Striking with halberds they cleaved through the Meganobz armour like it was butter, avenging their Purifier brothers as they did so.

Orks: Turn 5

Suddenly the orks were looking slightly lower on numbers. With their rear squad being assaulted by the dreadnoughts, the front squad severely depleted (down to 8 men) and the middle squad only at 10, the rear at 12
Shooting
Being cautious of the Purifiers’ obvious greater combat prowess the lead ork squad opened fire with its Big Shootas and the Big Mek’s Megablaster.
Purifier squad Ortho bucked and weaved and only Psycannon bearer Leonald was caught by a stray shoota round.
Behind the first squad the second Big Shoota squad fired at Purifier Squad Galen, but failed to take down any of the proud Grey Knights.
Assault
The Dreadnoughts Jonas and Kurgen once again stamped out with their feet and spun their autocannons to smash orks aside from the rear squad, and managed to kill another 3 orks.
In return the Nob in the squad managed to Stun Honoured Brother Kurgen...

TURN 6: Grey Knights
Movement
Honoured Brother Litigarus moved so he could join the assault against the rear squad later.
The Inquisitors were now in contact with the Thunderhawk crews, demanding extraction since more reinforcements were bound to be incoming soon and their comms had receieved hails from the “Herald of the Emperor” Their retinues couldn’t fire at any of the orks now so Thoth and Varlen gave the order to prepare to withdraw.
Purifier squad Ortho moved 6” towards the lead ork squad, with Galen’s squad right behind him.
Shooting
Again the psycannons and storm bolters of the Purifier squads took a fearsome toll on the ork squads, with both Ortho and Galen concentrating on the lead squad., 3 orks (including the Big Mek) remained from 7.
Assault
Honoured Brother Litigarus joined his brother dreadnoughts in their assault against the rear orks, wading in with 3 Str 6 attacks.
4 orks fell to the wrath of the dreadnoughts, leaving the rear squad perilously low on numbers, but the Nob hacked and beat the remaining orks out of the way to tear at Brother Jonas’ sarcophagus with his powerklaw. The dreadnought couldn’t stop the marauding ork, and with a mighty crash Jonas thundered to the ground, his sarcophagus burst open and leaking fluids...
Purifier squads Ortho and Galen fell on the two other ork squads (numbering now only 3 and 7).
Casting Cleansing Flame twice they slaughtered their way through the first ork squad, ripping the Big Mek apart in a flurry of halberd blows, and consolidating into the second ork squad.

Turn 6: Orks

The rear ork squad (now down to 5 orks including the Nob) was desperately trying to kill the dreadnoughts. Again Litigarus and Kurgen stamped and spun and 2 more orks were cut down. The Nob desperately tried to use his Bosspole to keep morale, and managed to, but no attacks hit the mammoth machines in return.
Having nowhere to go, and incensed that most of his army was wiped out, the remaining Big Mek led his ork squad in a desperate charge against the Purifiers. Cleansing Flame poured forth, and annihilated no less that 5 orks . And finally the Big Mek went down in a flail of halberds, the Purifiers’ superior initiative annihilating the orks before they could respond.
NO TURN 7
Result: Draw
Victory Points Orks: 1 Purifier Squad, 2 Strike Squads, 5 Rhinos, 1 Dreadnought = 9
Victory Points GK: 2 units Deffkoptas. 3 Boyz Squads, Trukk, Meganobz, 2 Big Meks = 9

Epilogue (ALL FLUFF NOT IN GAME)

The Purifiers were set to destroy the final ork squad when their comms units buzzed and Thoth and Varlen ordered an immediate withdrawal to rendevouz half a kilometre south, near where the deffkoptas had destroyed the valley entrance.
With a heavy heart the Grey Knights disengaged, (not before the Purifiers destroyed the final orks with stormbolter fire, and activated the teleport function on the dead strike squads’ armour. The fallen Purifiers were also set for teleportation.
With Litigarus and Kurgen forming a rear guard the Inquisitors and their retinues, along with the surviving Purifiers, hurried south away from the battlefield. Huddling by the rockface of the boulders strewn across the valley floor, they waited for the Thunderhawks to come.
In the north a great rumbling could be heard as hundreds of Ork Battlewagons and Trukks raced to the site of the battle.
Thoth looked at Varlen, and gave a slow shake of his head. No comms from the Thunderhawks....

They waited 5 minutes, 10......15....
Overhead a scream of tortured metal, and 2 battlescarred Thunderhawks droopped down 50 metres from the Grey Knights. Behind them came a squadron of Ork Fighters, guns blazing
AS they ran to the Thunderhawks, stubba shots pattering around them, the Purifiers opened fire with their psycannons and stormbolters against the fighters. One of the fighters went down cartwheeling across the plain after a psycannon bolt went rending through it, the other 2 peeled off to avoid the incoming fire.
Once on board each of the Thunderhawks the Jokaeros quickly went to work on the damaged weapons systems. With the heavy bolters inoperable by the crew due to a lucky lascannon strike by the ork fighters the transports had had no way to shoot back at the marauding aircraft.
While the ships bucked and maneuvered, with the purifiers keeping up a stream of fire from the side doors, the Jokaeros accessed the ship’s machine spirit. With deft touches, and arcane procedures, the heavy bolters on each craft started to come back to life and swing round to target the incoming Orks.
BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM.
The Ork fighters exploded in a huge conflagration of superheated metal and orky parts. The Heavy Bolters had fired far more powerfully than normal, with the Jokaeros speeding up the fire rate and projectile speed the bolters were capable of through communication with the machine spirit.
The Thunderhawks pointed their noses at the sky and engaged their full burners, quickly achieving orbit where the “Herald of the Emperor” awaited them.
Quickly the Inquisitors and surviving Grey Knights departed the Thunderhawks when they’d landed, heading for the Bridge.
There they engaged the strike cruisers teleporters, beaming up the wreckage of all their dead and vehicles and Brother Jonas, even as the Orks arrived to start looting the bodies....
No trace of the Grey Knights could be left.

In their report to the Ordo Malleus Council Varlen and Thoth praised the sacrifice of the Grey Knights in their pursuit of victory on that battlefield. Honoured Brother Jonas’ body was laid to rest in the Halls of Eternity along with the Strike Squads of Lucifius and Aurelius, and Purifier squad Atros.

The Daemon Icon ring on Yaga Majoris III, with one of the icons de-activated, failed to open and let a Daemonic Hoarde into the material realm.
Yaga Majoris III is still currently under Ork control, although Ordo Malleus operatives have been instructed to recommend Space Marine and Imperial Guard forces to liberate the system.

Nice battle report, although I question the act of moving towards the mega nobz instead of the boyz with the Purifiers. Some extra Cleansing Flame could have brought your VP tally up a little quicker and left more men available to take out the Mega Nobz in later turns.

However, wading through over 120 Orks is never going to be easy.

Loving the extra fluff you've added to the report too!

Thanks. yes the Purifiers in future will hang back more and pummel with psycannons more.
Adding Vindicares to list and losing inquisitors to make it a purifier only list (Crowe where are you) so I can take those Kriffing KFFs. I HATE THEM

Apologies if it's unclear what squad of orks is what and where the Big Meks were, I can't take pics to go with games.

Awesome batrep and great writing!

Just curious...on Turn 3, it seemed that your Strike squad rhinos moved 6" and they disembarked...and during the assault phase, they assaulted?

in my redone list I'm taking vindicares.

As for turn 3......I wrote this battle rep about 2 days after the game and some of the events got muddled up in my head. I don't think the strike squads did assault the turn they got out, but they def did shoot.
