I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
Hello, I've been playing 40k for a while now with Tau and I think that I want to spruce things up a bit. I'm going to buy a Grey Knights Codex in a few days to study it . I've looked at a few codices online and Grey Knights really appeals to me (I guess I'm suffering from close combat deprivation )
I also believe that I rushed building my Tau army and I'm pretty sure that was pretty detrimental to their paint job so I do plan to take my time with The Knights and to make sure I do my best on them. So i guess the the reason I came here was because i wanted to get some advice on which units are the best to start out with and that can be easily supplemented to make a small force into a playable army as well as getting to know other players who I know have a great understanding of the army from reading the forums . Well thats my first post here and I hope I have a great time reading the codex as well as reading the articles on this website. Thanks for reading and/or commenting, I really appreciate it!

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
Welcome brother Pip. I am in a similar situation as I am just starting a grey knights army as well.
The only thing I would reccomend is starting out with a strike squad. They are the units I started out with and based on your criteria they would be a pefect fit for your needs. They can be easily supplemented and turned into a very small playable army sans the HQ unit of course.
Everyone here is very respectful and gives excellent advice. You are sure to get all the help you will ever need to build your grey knights army here.

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
Welcome!
Definately grab the codex and figure out what you would like to feild.
The PAGK box sets are great since they make up pretty much 40% of your choices (Strike Squads, Interceptor Squads, Purifiers, Purgation Squads), while the GKT boxes make your Terminators and Paladins.
GK should be a nice change from Tau, being quite combat orientated, while also holding their own in in mid-short ranged shooting.
Then you have all the fancier options, Storm Ravens, Land Raiders, Dreadnoughts and DreadKnights, Inquisitorial choices.
There is also a variety of HQ options, with GM's providing some nice tactical options, Librarians being your potent psykers, Inquisitors opening up henchmen, and a few named characters for more specialised army builds.

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
I too recently started GK, (even tho i started b4 i knew they was being re-released). I saw a sqaud of termis and stern in my local store in the window and fell in love with the models instantly.
Few months later they come out in the shops and im like WAHOOOOO.
Any way i started with 2 squads of termis and stern (brother captian) the main reason for this was price to start with i wanted to keep the price down while i tested them out... man GK are my fav army i have now and considering how much i love my space wolves thats saying something.
Have a look at some army lists, check out some battle reports out there on you tube etc. Beasts of WAr did a grey knights week and even tho it was not toaly correct they got the the bulk corret. It should give you some idea as what units to field etc.
If you get stuck or not to sure... post it here anyone here is more then happy to help and to add there imput. Great forum, Great guys.
Good luck

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
welcome on board brother
i'm happy that you're taking the problem in the right way ... asking for advice and taking your time to create and paint your army is a proof of maturity and the good way to go.
my first piece of advice : buy the codex and check what sort of army do you want to play... then buy your elected HQ and 1 troop unit, paint them after choosing your colour code and then extend your army the way you want it.

the new codex has a huge range of options supported for almost any play style , the PAGK as people have said covers lots of options , the terminators are pretty handy too as they give enough spare parts to convert heroes , librarians etc
Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
Welcome to the forum. I've done the opposite and recently started Tau after playing GK and Templars. You'll find it's like playing a whole new game.

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
I'd suggest a terminator set first. Terminators are the core line infantry for the Grey Knights, and until you know how you're going to use them you won't know what to build your power armoured specialists as. It would be a pain tearing off purifier backpacks because you realise you need interceptors.
Then again, if you see yourself building a power armoured force more in line with a normal codex space marine army you're probably not so worried about the big guys.

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
Wow, thanks for all the replies, much appreciated! I went and bought my self a codex today and have spent the better part of my day reading it. I'm very impressed with the options that are available. The only worry i have is that an initiative of 4 seems pretty common. I was wondering if this has caused any problems for you guys espeicially against Tyranids(I have a friend who likes to outflank A LOT of genestealers and as you can imagine this caused a bit of a problem for my poor firewarriors).
Anyway, i like the idea of fielding terminators as a hard-hitting troops choice but i realized that you could also take strike squads and use paladins in place of termies .
As for heavy support i like the looks of dread knights and dislike the points cost of land raiders. What do you guys think works better for 1500 point games?
As for HQ, well all I can say is wow, there are bunches to pick from. I'll be scouring the codex the next few days at school as its standardized test week and you get loads of time to read.
Finally, this weekend I'll definitely be buying some boxes whether it be PAGK or termies, as well as some more paint and black primer. Once again many thanks to all who have contributed!
Tau'v.. err see you tomorow!

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
The initiative thing shouldn't be a worry, with the ability to make almost all your troops initiative 6 (for a price of course) and as far as land raiders vs dread knights, they are both solid options but both come with a high price. A fully kitted DK costs almost the same as a LR!!

Welcome Brother, lieges and lords to this fine GK/ Daemonhunter site. I agree with Brother Madbackery as far as the DK and landraider but I bet the DK will smack the machine spirits a$$ out of the smoldering metal after it's done. IMHO, the DK has long range and close range, it's strength is in assault with no chance of being shot at, while the LR will get your troops to their destination with a better chance than any transport... unless you teleport into battle. Have fun and good luck.

Keep in mind that you will probably have good success magnetising backpacks for interceptor/strike squads, personally I would normally run both pretty much the same, standard with a psycannon or two, so its only the backpack that changes.

Brilliant! brother Zealadin... you have the mind to aspire to be a great Grandmaster with grand startegy. I love pure GK armies but I converted 5 scouts into deathcult assassins with 2 power weapons, set them up with 10 warrior acolytes and they'll make up their meager points in close combat with high WS, 2 power weapon attacks and high Init.

Re: I'm very interested in Grey Knights...
3 power weapon attacks actually :p, one bonus for the two PW's.
They certainly are an amazing choice!!!
Trying to figure out how to include them in my army too!! (normally go pure GK too).
@ pip_dawg, keep in mind that psyammo doesn't help a Psycannon.
I would probably go as far as to say that you absolutely HAVE to give GKT the maximum number of psycannons possible. Relentless, and it not replacing the NFW is an absolute huge boon. Plus its about as effective as a LC against tanks.

Like yourself new to the mighty Grey Knights but not to the game. In saying that new to 5th edition 40K last played 4th Edition but already had my update games and Imust say I am really enjoying my return. Played Ultramarines before but on seeing the Brothers of Titan well there was only one choice.
For me, being a self confessed kraut lunatic, I am going the nuts to the wall approach. Deep Striking Librarians into the enemies back yard, summoning landraiders full of nasties....GK termies, Jump infantry rated Interceptors and Dread Knights and I just have to drop more termies in with Storm Ravens. To me Grey Knights are so close to my heart...Move fast ,stay unpredicatable, attack and attack some more and kick arse.
Oh and never leave home without Halberds....strike first Initiative 6, force weapon...can't go wrong.

ok, so I bought my first grey knights last Saturday after a really fun apocalypse game even if the titans tended to obliterate my troops. So I've finally gotten the time to actually put one together and I like the way he looks, he has a pretty imposing presence compared to a firewarrior. Now all I have to do is buy myself a new can of primer and some paint to supplement my own and I should be good to go. When i get one painted ill see if i can post a pic or two to show off my far less than perfect painting abilities . (Sorry if there is an abnormal amount of spelling errors as my keyboard is on the fritz again)

Don't worry about the spelling brother, many GK bretheren here on Titan have high intellects to decipher the messages. I wonder if the GK masterforgers can create a GK Titan to smite the big boss Daemon Gods... Oh my bad that's why we have GKNDK's and GM Draigo. It would be interesting to see a huge GKT looking titan just walk across the field with multiple Psycannons and Incinerators, smashing CSM and daemons like Godzilla on Tokyo.

Hmmmmmmmmm, a GKT Titan. Summer Project found.
My dad is a sculptor who has knowledge of balsa construction and remote control motors. If I draw up some sketches(the only thing i do thats somewhat productive during the last few weeks of school) im sure me and my dad could construct a titan over the summer.
