Characters vs "normal" HQ

Post by Corennus on Fri Apr 15, 2011 3:59 am

I'm wondering about people's thoughts on the Grey Knights characters that are available in the new codex. Off the cuff most of them are pretty expensive, but at the same time they'll smash just about any other HQ to smithereens.
Everybody's pretty hyped up about Castellan Crowe, until they realise he's not an IC, but still good to have purifiers as troops, and with him being rending on a 4+ brotherhood champion he can certainly tie down an opponent's best unit for a while (if they don't gain too much from Furious Charge and Feel No Pain)

Mordrak.....not an IC again, but you get FREE terminators if you let him take a wound, and they become stealth terminators! T1000s anyone?
Also being a Grand Master means he can make your elites take objectives, or have scouts rule, or reroll wounds of a 1...and he deep strikes first turn!

Brother Captain Stern....The only Grey Knight to make a re-appearance from Daemonhunters, and TBH 200 points for a character who can get his own troops killed is making me reserve judgement on him. He may be absolutely awesome with a 3++ save in CC, then again for 200 points you can take Mordrak, or Crowe with points to spare.

The Inquisitors:

Coteaz, Some nice rules I think. An all henchmen army can be VERY shooty and with his unit able to take a "free" shot at anything that deep strikes within 12" it makes a nice warding piece to guard against being overrun by a BA army perhaps (need more thoughts on that).
Plus at 100 points he's awesomely cheap.

Kamarazov, Relentless, 4 wounds, Orbital Strike, Master Crafted everything, what's not to like. Apart from the cost. Good if you want Orbital Strike without the extra cost for a Captain or Grand Master I guess, and being T5 it means he can't be taken out by anything less than a Str 10 weapon.

Valeria: Some really interesting wargear, making her quite good in CC, but still only with Str 3 and T3 she'll suffer against anything at higher str and toughness, and with no special rules she's going to be an interesting choice for people. Do they take valeria, or save points and get an ordinary inquisitor with kind of the same abilities...

And finally the big daddy. the wanderer, the immortal:

He is Kaldor Draigo, the Supreme Grand Master. For 200 years he's been a soldier, a wanderer, a legend. Constantly facing daemons in combat to the death. The winner takes the enemy's head, and with it its power. In the end there can only be one......oops wrong fiction!

Kaldor Draigo....3++ save, Eternal Warrior, Grand Stategy, 4 base attacks at a possible Str 6 (put him with a librarian and a paladin squad and cast hammerhand and might of titan you get him to Str 7 or even 8 if he casts hammerhand on himself), And he makes the 2 wound deatheaters (wrong fiction again!) troops! 275 points though so if you want to field him you need a LARGE points base. Anything under 2000 will struggle to take full advantage of him I feel, but then again, having 4 Paladin Squads with FNP and warding staves would be quite nasty!

So who's your fave character so far? or do you eschew characters and terminators to take advantage of the larger numbers of GKs and purifiers you can field?

Usually normal HQ has the advantage of being highly customizable, and you can make them do what you want.

On the other side, too often special characters are unbalanced (too good or too bad), so I take them ONLY if I need to make a theme and fluffy army, that requires that extra coolness factor. Or if you want to min/max the army (take Draigo or Crowe and you can make an rarmy fielding only Paladins and Purifiers, that is elite only).

Now, this time there is a Special Character that does what I need most for my planned army. For a full Deep Strike army you need Mordrak for to reasons: Deep Strike and no scatter. Attach a teleport homer carrier to his unit and you have the perfect deepstriking army, never missing the target. Then I can field only regular GKs, it's just a matter of how many models I have. You can obtain similar results with a Stormraven, if you want to, but you need to find a way to grant it to survive to the second turn...

You need to have Mordrak with a librarian toting a teleport homer. that's 365 points of HQ!

What points are you running with that army?

I was very taken by Mordrak when reading the codex. Arrives on first turn, can't scatter, can take up to 8 ghost knights if he takes wounds but still survives (with a full squad of ghost knights to start with).

If you want a good deep striking army, then may I suggest you take a look at the lowly purgation squad. For 105 points (BARGAIN!) you can have them deep strike then have every other unti in the army come down on their position.

The dream army would be Draigo with Paladins more than Crowe with Purifiers cause Purifiers can't deep strike! Though if you went mass rhinos with purifiers it could be an interesting force to take on.

Purgation squads can't DS either, can they?

Are you talking about Strike Squads?

Nice idea, but they can't DS. Only Strike, Interceptor and Terminator based units can DS in the GK codex. You will have to mount them in a rhino or razorback and give them scout via the grand strategy to benefit from their 5 point homer.

Just looking at the codex, there are few decent Special Characters. Sure we have a total of seven special HQ's, but very few are useful.

I'll admit though, Stern's new spell is a bit questionable, but I can see this only being useful if he is the last one standing and is on his own. Other then that, you should be using his other abilities, he's a level 2 psyker, so take advantage of that!

Mordrak is useful, if your going to make a pure GKT army or DS army, he's needed to get that Psychic Communion off, even better if you take him with either a GM or BC.

Draigo, I find the fluff behind him to be rather silly and makes him a questionable piece to include in any army. Reason why I've converted one of my older models to be him, and to have that one act as my Supreme Grand Master. Fluff aside, what he does for your army is great; taking Paladin's as troops is expensive, but he's the Supreme Grand Master (or was when you think about his fluff a bit more), and he's an excellent Anti-GK unit as well. Yes, he is good to punish the foul wannabe GK posers since he'll be S10 all day long. Now I know that I said that he'll be good for that, but his main purpose is to slay Daemons, and that's about it really.

Crowe, nothing much else to really add about him. Wouldn't really consider him useful if it wasn't for his key abilities: Make Purifiers troops, having the cleansing flame ability, an extra wound and initiative as well. Those are the only upsides for having him over a Brotherhood Champion. His sword is silly, he can't join a unit and buff that unit, nor does he have as good of a save as a normal Champ does in CC. The question for him really is, how can I get the most out of him when he can't really give a nice boost to any squad at all since he's a Champ too but he can't join one.

Coteaz is interesting, taking Warbands as troops, thats a good buff, and his Anti-Deepstrike ward. A tad weaker then the old Mystic retinue buff, but at least its still there in the book. Even though his stats were nerfed a bit, some of the stuff that he's been given makes up for it (Goes from 181 Points down to 100? I LOVE IT!!!). Now able to cast two spells a turn. Have a decent shooting attack that doesn't require a test to use. Not entirely anti-daemon now, so he has more uses. It saddens me to see him lose his S4 and 5++ stat, but he knows Hammerhand and can hide in a unit hopefully. Also, knowing Sanctuary will give a HUGE buff to any unit that he's with.

Karamazov, nothing much to say here that he should be stuck in cover now that he's lost his 4++ save and Monstrous Creature status. He's tough, so he should last long in cover, and with lots of Orbital Strikes, he's no slouch either in shooting.

Valeria, eh a tad questionable with taking her, but of all Inquisitors, she is the only one who has an invulnerable save. She doesn't really offer much to the army besides lots of attacks and interesting wargear. That's all that she has to offer.

Compared to normal HQ's, you can get a lot of stuff from having your own personalized character. Ranging from a ranged specialist, to a CC beast who can outshine most other characters from other armies. For example, a normal Champ can easily take on any non-eternal warrior or monster and win. And with having a better save in CC, it can effectively tie up important wounds on the unit that you placed him in. What can Crowe do? Cause a rending wound? Shoot flames? Make an elite unit a troop? That's about it.

Take a look at both the GM and BC, lots of options there to work with for the two of them. Can get more pricey then a character, but will worth its weight in gold when used.

i like the idea of mordrak and stealth termies and lord draigo is a beast i used to play chaos marines 2k pts always had addabon in. as for inquisitors i like the look of valeria she has wargear for most missions like power weapon, thats prison for those nasty things like trigons, 3+ and 4++ is good, plus runes which make her enemy reroll successful saves for shooting and CC

Crowe because troops win most games and imo Purifiers are the best troop choice I can think of... I'm starting to lose interest in terminators...
Mordrak seems pretty cool if you can attack a few meltaguns/flamers in there.

Love Mordrak. Center piece of my termie deepstriking army.

Anyway, HERE is what it comes down to in my opinion for the Grey Knight's hero choice. All those hero's are awesome; and can let you build around them very nicely.

But, they dont have psychostroke, rad, or any of those other fancy gear. Want that +2 init or that ++2 invuln in close combat? You can build your GM or BC for it. And good emperor is it devastating.

The issue with me is, whenever I start gearing my GM to be a badass, he ends up getting close or passing the HQ hero's in points Razz Hard to complain about though. I've made lists of fluff for my personal Brotherhood (Swords of Justice, 6th brotherhood!) so I can play around with all the other roles myself. Preference of the day, really.

Pure purifier armies in my honest opinion are just another marine army.
