I was wondering how many sqare base (fantasy) players out there from The USA are playing in Ard Boyz tommorrow and what are you bringing?

I will be playing and am bringing a High Elves list with Teclis and a good mix of swordmasters and whitelions.

Obviously not many, or they are too busy getting ready to check the forum!

I've considered getting into fantasy but don't really like an armies miniatures enough to settle on one. The new tomb king stuff is quite cool though!

agreed. I tried out fantasy for a bit but didn't really care for it. I i never tried it, though, those tomb king minis would definitely make me want to get into it

i'm first a player of fantasy (dwarf army... really big one (30 000 points painted and 10 000 un painted) and in metal only) i love the tactics and movements challenge of regiments
i came in 40k after with the GKs.
it's a different style of game ... in WHFB when you screw your first move you screw your battle it's more about strategy an d tactics

Have been thinking about playing Wood Elves for years. Hell, even bought the dex and a couple of boxes way, way back. Since I heard they were one of the few armies that actually got nerfed with the new edition that put any desire I had of playing fantasy right to bed.

To each his own I guess. I personally think premeasuring is the worst rule change they ever made, followed by random charge distances. It used to be a game about strategy and tactics and now it's dumbed it down so a child can play (GW's actual plan to get more kids involved and sell more models). We had a mini tournement last year and several of us just gave up after that and haven't played since. It just wasn't doing it for us. Here's hoping they do a better job with 9th.

The biggest problem i have with 8th ed is that it pushes armies to adapt Horde like numbers and mentality to be competitive. In that type of environment my specialist high elves army is at a disadvantage from the get go.

i didn't open my 8th rule book because of that change (measuring, extreme influence of magic and random charge distances) even though it would have been fun for my dwarf army to measure before shooting and to charge in 15", instead of 6", for once Razz
and i agree it's made to touch a new (younger) public for WHFB, it's fair for a gaming society, but a little sad for the old players and for the spirit of the game ... well i don't know maybe i'm an old fool... scratch Suspect

random charges distances arent a huge problem as you have your movement and then add
measuring makes sense arguing over distances and arcs lead to so many arguements between players and made no sense
Hi i am a 400yr old elf bowman but i am not sure how far i can shoot Smile
7th ed was all about sissors paper rock to my taste i have found 8th ed much more balanced and magic especially in 7th you either went magic heavy or didnt bother at all

I do agree current models are becomming more aimed at kids

I now play warhammer ancients Smile 10mm choice of cheap figures , 1 rule book , free army lists on line, 1 extra rule book covers all medievil armies , nice simple rules and battles are won on manouvre and tactics not who has the bigger shineys

The random charge distance can really mess up some armies. I used to play goblins and high elves back in 5th/6th edition but I've just started up Bretonnians. They lose out in the new rules because rolling low on charges means the cavalry are utterly crippled, but on the other hand the army can double up as a medieval army when I go historical.

Having an extra dice just means I roll three 1s instead of two. A new book will be good, the army list feels like it's lagging behind others.
