Storm raven

Post by brother captain sean on Sat Jan 29, 2011 4:59 pm

I have to say there are a lot of mixed feelings out there regarding the storm raven. I have to admit that I pre-ordered my first storm raven. It will be a fast attack tank killer. I'm hopping it takes some of the pressure off my land raiders. How cool is it that I can carry a dreadnaught and drop it knot combat (hopefully). Brothers this may be our only other option for melta and las cannons to support our forces. Also it is a fast attack (hopefully) that doesn't take away from our troop choices, like deepstriking a grey knight squad does at this time. Here is hoping for the continued strength 6 weapons for our forces brothers.

There has been much debate on the usefulness (particularly for Grey Knights) of the Storm Raven.

Personally, I can see myself loading a strike force of 5 GK Termies and a Hero inside it, Dreadnought in the back, reserving it and having it come in 12 inches to disembark the units. Then firing all its defensive weapons, main weapon, and POMS another weapon at a target, in combination with the massive firepower of the Dreadnought and Termies. Then, multi-assault, and be back home in time for cake.

Of course the problem is that its fragile, and a big target; if it gets nailed by something like a lascannon and you fail the cover save it will garner, then you can count pretty much everything inside as good as lost in the warp. In addition, will Grey Knights really have the points to field one of these things? Its not something that's probably going to live through turn 3; and I see it as quite an expensive and unreliable piece of anti-tank.

There are other reasons for/against it, but my personal main reason is this: GW priced the thing at $66-70 dollars. SCREW. THAT. That is an awful bit of expensive plastic and I am sick of the huge over pricing of models that Games Workshop is known for. I'd love to have one for the sake of having one (a Grey Knight air unit that's not the mondo-expensive Thunderhawk? Please!) but its probably not going to be crucial to a strike force.

And yes, I really hope, at the least for our Terminators, to retain Str6. It would make sense for the PAGK to get force weapons and be Str4, so long as the Termies continue to be able to hunt big ass daemons and other monsters.

I see it as a cheaper and faster version of a Land Raider. Though I don't know how it's going to turn out with the new codex, but I can see it being set relatively similar to the Blood Angels in terms of points and streamlined options.

i have seen the data sheet for this in the white dwarf its 200 pts standard but with extra armour and H bolter thats 240 or 250 pts so for it to have the sam efire power as a raider it then costs the same but less armour more movement

truthly if i had to choose which one to field itll always be land raider unless i do 1 raider 1 st raven

also in the UK it costs 41 which is abit when raiders cost 38 (dam i bought mine last year was 30)

Costs $110 here (yes we get ripped off).
I saw it today instore. Still not much of a fan, but its much better than in the pictures. Still can't beleive it got past the drawing board stage of production!
Personally I think its most ideal with the CML, LC, and EA which brings the cost up to 240 from memory.
This means it has the bloodstrike missiles to really hurt something first turn, but also sustained firepower, with flexibility thanks to the CML. (AT or anti hoard, or a mix splitting targets with PotMS)
They can also be run just with a CC orientated Dread which is good.

Hopefully GK have an army that works with them, although I still think the raven is overcosted. 150 points before upgrades is probably more realistic for AV12.
Anyway, it will work, but it will require massive micro management to be worth the points.

Mmmm let's see, the SR costs 200 pts with TLMM+TLPC/TLLC+Bloodstrike Missiles. Want to add side sponsons with Hurricane Bolters? This ups the cost to 230 pts., add some EA and it goes up to 245. The best config so far is TLMM+TLPC+Missiles. Some people also fancy the Hurricane sponsons so you're looking at 230 pts tops, making it a very nice fire platform for any army.

One SR in your army will be sitting ducks all the time. Two will increase survibability. I'm not saying add 10 SR so you get to play with them, but let's be honest, one LR in any army is as good as none so... you add one more. I play BA and have tried it (with proxies of course) in many armies and it always delivers. It's not an all-armies vehicle but certainly it is not another useless vehicle either.

I agree with everything my fellow brothers have all stated. However, we can hold out that the cost of the SR and some of it's wargear may change from what the BA are allowed to what we are allowed when our new codex comes out.

Personally, I don't think the price will change much, if at all. The only thing I can see different is having psycannon options which I doubt we'll get because it's not on the existing sprue. Since 'Bloodstrike' missiles are BA fluffy in name, I'm curious if they're going to change the name and/or the type and affect the missiles have for our dex.

Since they don't have psycannons on the sprue it would be cool if the missiles have a similar effect on targets that the psycannons have. Also I hope we will be able to carry the same amount of models and a dreadnought.

No Psycannons? There should be a Psybolt upgrade in the Vehicle armory for hurricane sponson stormbolter/ bolters, that may be used as a lesser substitute for Psycannons. I agree, cool idea if there was a str8 48in range Krak Psymissile.

The Bloodstrike missiles are S8 AP1 48" range shots. And you get 4 of them. Now ignoring Invul. saves can make them very powerful which I don't think we're gonna get anytime soon (although it is a very cool idea).

Bloodstrike missiles, that's right, I remember reading a bit of info on that. The name sounds too BA, it may be just me. Fluff wise, Psybolt infuse warheads with no invul saves would be a Daemon Prince/ Any HQ with Invul saves, worst nightmare. Plus, four to contend with. It would be nice to be able to purchase more for say, 15pts each like a Ironclad DN hunterkiller missile. Just a thought. jocolor
