SoCal Smackdown Sept 2010 results
Brothers, just came back from a weekend of gaming at the SoCal Smackdown GT in Anaheim, CA and had an AWESOME time! It was my first real GT and it was definitely a learning experience. Met a lot of nice people and even got to know several fellow San Diego players In an effort to not make this a super long read, I will summarize (extensively) and get to the end results (both good and bad). I will also include a few pictures. I wasn't able to take pics of all the rounds.
First round - vs. Tau(Annihilation, DoW): My opponent actually had a build that I dreaded the most. He had 9 railguns and a very mobile Tau force with a lot of battlesuits and a lot of marker lights.
What really helped me here was my deployment because it sort of neutralized half his army that was on the other side of the board.
I actually got lucky and pulled off a draw in KP 3-3. But he scored extra points for secondary and bonus mission objectives. Score: 14-6 victory for the Tau
Second round: vs Tyranids (Take and hold, Pitched Battle): First encounter with 'nids from the new codex and they are freakin' scary. His HQ was this thing called the Swarm lord that was just a real beast. Plus he had these winged warriors that had weapons that cause instant death on a successful psychic test w/ 3 dice!
I berate myself for this game because a crucial error (poor shot selection) on my part really cost me the game. I was in a serious position to win the game but instead, completely lost the primary, secondary and bonus missions Score: 20-0 victory for the Tyranids
Third round - vs. Necrons (Get as much KP into opponent's deployment zone, Pitched Battle): My opponent had bright orange colored necrons But they did look spectacular on the tabletop
My opponent had the Deceiver so my psycannons really came to the fore. I killed the Deceiver with 1 turn of combined shooting. Although his several units of destroyers really did some damage. We tied for the primary mission w/ 2 units in each other's deployment zone but I was able to snag the secondary and bonus missions. Score: 14-6 victory for the Grey Knights
Fourth round - vs. Tau (again) (Capture and Control, Pitched Battle): I came into this game a little more hopeful because this player's Tau build had a couple less railguns (only 7 ) but his forces were more static. However, EXTREMELY BAD dice rolls killed me. The game had a special random condition that would sometimes make the whole board dangerous terrain for vehicles. I managed to self-immobilize both raiders 12" away from dumping my GK's into his Fire Warriors. Moreover, I lost my entire HQ squad in 2 shooting turns by failing 2+ saves Needless to say, these dice misfortunes really dictated the results. I was quite confident that had my GK's reached the Tau lines, it would have been over for him. Score: 20-0 victory for the Tau
Fifth round - vs. Space Wolves (Annihilation, Spearhead): I already knew I had a huge advantage this game because my opponent had a lot of easy killpoints (rhinos, razorbacks, bikes). I made sure to carefully gauge distances and positioned my forces right around the 30" range. True enough, shrouding worked more than not while my psycannons just started eating up his Long Fangs. My dread and LR's managed to pop rhinos left and right. His dread (w/ assault cannon) and vindicator were immobilized near his table quarter putting them effectively out of the fight. But the real killer for my opponent was his bad rolling. I thought I was already rolling very bad (still rolling 1's a lot) but he was failing 75% of his armor saves every time I shot him. But my opponent had a good sense of humor and it turned out to be a really fun (funny) game. Final tally was 9-1 KP and final score was 16-4 victory for the Grey Knights.
So, I won 2 and lost 3 but 2 of the 3 losses could have been avoided (one if the dice had been relatively normal, and the other if I had been more careful with my decisions). Overall, not bad for my first GT.
I'm still VERY ECSTATIC because...(pause for drumbeat), at the awarding ceremony, the organizers (who called me Mr. NMM )said I placed First for Best Painting!!!!! However, my army was also voted Best Army by all 30+ players in the tourney!!!!! The organizers told me that since the prize support for Best Army was higher, they gave me that instead and gave the Best Painted Army to the next guy in line.
So I got a Valkyrie and a Plague bearer's box set
I still consider myself lucky because my second LR was not really finished. Yeah it was painted to be tourney legal but I didn't have time to finish it. I really thought it would take me out of the running but I guess everybody loved all the other models. They couldn't believe a whole army painted in NMM
Brothers, I present to you Strike Force Rivan/Stern:
Once I finish the 2nd LR, this will be a 2000 pt NMM army!

Wow congrats! I love the army itself too, and you definitely do a good job painting. and from your attitude, it sounds like your they kind of person every tourney organizer hopes to attract, someone fun who wows the other players even when not winning, so i'm glad you got a prize.

Wow now that is a nice result, and congrats on your victories!
Sounds like you learnt alot but came away with an amazing prize.
Also makes GK seem far more viable than people would have us beleive

Great pictures, glad to hear that you had fun at the GT!
Amazing looking army so far, it's a force that really comes together when you can see all of it put out on the table at once.
What list did you use for the tournament? You mentioned that it was 2000pts.

Re: SoCal Smackdown Sept 2010 results
Thanks Brothers!
It was definitely a good experience, on all aspects. I saw how the other armies were done and even got a few good ideas to improve on showcasing my army for the next tourney.
Also, my belief in the viability of our army was reinforced since I KNOW I could have done better were it not for some poor decisions on my part. In hindsight (w/c is always 20/20 of course ), I could have deployed or moved or shot differently that would have probably increased my winning ratio.
@Cease: I used my GM/Stern combo list under my "army list" thread

most importent is that you had have fun. And gratulation for the best painted army. Well deserved.
The nids are nasty, aren´t they? What have your opponent fielded (beside the Swarm Lord)?

He had a tyranid prime w/ boneswords, hormaguants w/ poison sacs, hive guard brood, venomthrope brood, 4 tyranid shrikes w/ boneswords and 2 tyrannofex.

Nicely done Rivan and grats on the award. It was well-deserved. That Swarmlord can be nasty. Especially when he uses that power that makes your most potent units hit like a bunch of girly girls.

Nice to see GK's can still be competitive at tournies, gives me hope that some other GK players might dare to bring out their armies before the new 'dex. Congratulations on getting best painted and best army, that's a really impressive feat, and thoroughly deserved since your miniatures are beautiful ( on a side note anyone else lol at the fact they gave a GK player some demons as a prize )

Congratulation for your "Best Army" and "Painting" victory. The score on the battlefield is secondary, as long as you had fun.

Thanks Bigbri, Elugin. Yeah, I wasn't too concerned w/ the battle score because I had fun in all my games. But the Best army and painted category really meant a lot to me because that's where my real passion is

I know I think I'm going to use them as part of my display board. I'm making a shrine and will set it up like my GK's are defending it from daemons. I'll probably even use the new demon prince model.

Actually, they're also darn usefull for casual games. I don't know if any of you have played a game where your enemy used the nemisis rules in the back of our book, but it's super fun. you need to own like 2 squads of daemons and one big guy to do it though, as most other players wont have/buy daemons just to play a fun game or two against you, so you'll have to supply them.

Nice army and battles!
About your display board by the way, wouldn't it be easier and less daemonic if you would make like a warprift where the daemons and daemon prince come out or are next to and the grey knights coming to the rescue?
It would be a better excuse for a large force of grey knights on one spot. But that's just my idea, keep up your good work!
