Another game- another battle report in my ongoing effort to show that the DH book can still in fact a viable army to play in 5th edition. This time I square off against the dreaded Space Wolves of Fenris. What made the game so interesting was that while I fully mechanize my army for greater mobility and as a way to gain some anti-tank hitting power. My opponent went the other route- fielding sixty something Space Wolf Space marines, five terminators, with only two dreads as his vehicles – this way he could overwhelm the enemy with units that excel in close combat. The exact opposite of my list- it was gonna be a tough game as Space Wolves are rather good at close combat- something that my Grey Knights do reasonably well at, but with only 14 Grey Knights in Power Armor, and 5 Terminators....I was hideously outnumbered to say the least. We decided to try out one of the Battle Missions given in the new aptly named Battle Missions book- and decided on “Vanguard” which involves three objectives- in my deployment zone.

Game Type: Vanguard- Out of the new Battle Missions book
Deployment: As specified within the rule book. The Space Wolves player gets the first turn, and has to walk onto the board from his side of the table in turn one.

My strategy:
I deployed my army in the center of the board, so I could hopefully move my army in either direction, to avoid the brunt of the Space Wolves advance from hitting into my small force. I needed to stay at a bit of range- about 24' would be best for me where I could pepper his squads with storm bolter fire. If I was going to charge into any Space Wolf squads, they had to be whittled down to the point where I could rush in- finish the scraps then consolidate away from the rest of his force quickly. But with only 4 lascannons I couldn't kill a great number of them- and since they are Space Marines- I can't just apply my flame templates and good amount of storm bolter fire and call it a good day. I had to use my mobility and hope that his squads start to separate a bit as they walked along the game board towards the objectives.

If you doing the math with this list at the moment, you'll quickly learn that it's about 200 or so points over the 1850 mark. At the start of the game my opponent and myself mistakenly believed that he was a bit under in points for the game- and added in Njal Stormcaller to bring his list up the 1850pts. We both completely missed this mathematical error- but we caught it a few days after the game when we were taking about the game via email on our local store forums. This little mistake didn't change the fact that it was an awesome game- and a blast to play, and such mistakes do in fact happen and they are not a big deal.

The objectives are shown here with the red circles (3 objectives).

Turn One:
Space Wolves- The wolves marched onto the board- where the amount of Space wolves that my opponent was using didn't fully sink in... until I saw that stretched from side to side of the table. He anchored his left flank with the two dreads, Njal and his terminators in the center- behind a squad of Grey Hunters. The wolves not being able to able to shoot ran forward- with way to many 6's rolled to make me feel comfortable about my position. His Dreadnoughts opened fire on the closest Land Raider- missing and failing to do anything against the Land Raider.

Daemon Hunters- I had the three objectives firmly located within my deployment zone- and I had deployed at about the mid section of my deployment area- no need to go after the objectives just yet. I generally milled about unproductively as I moved the two Rhinos slightly to my right flank and shot with my lascannons at the center squad with one raider- felling two of the space wolves. The Raider located along my left flank opened up with it's lascannons wrecking one of the two Dreadnoughts. One of the long range AT threats has now been dealt with..just another sixty something more models to go!

Turn Two:
Space Wolves- Everything in the army began to move up a bit more again- one wolf squad started to break off a little bit on the right flank heading towards the ruins of a building located on that flank to match the movement of the two rhinos. I had the mobility in this fight, but my opponent was smart- he was penning me in along my board edge, forming a long line of infantry. If I assaulted one, I would immediately get assaulted by the nearest unit or two. His Dreadnought opened up with his lascannon at the closest raider missing the giant metal box with an unnerving accuracy. Njal blows through my psychic hood and proceeds to rip the stormbolter and stun one of the two Rhinos.

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves DHvsSW_Turn_2_Space_Wolves

Daemon Hunters- Figuring that it would take the wolves another turn or two before he was in a range to really do some damage....bust still. I moved the rhinos closer again to my main force. If it was intent on coming to me, I was going to circle the wagons so to speak. I use the raiders to full effect again- killing off several more wolves- targeting the center and far left squads. I needed to focus fire on these units to break his line in two places, and hopefully panic him enough where my IST's can move in to claim objectives. The raider on the left flank stuns the dread- so it effectively cannot fire this coming turn- one less thing to worry about.

Turn Three:
Space Wolves- The wolf squads move forward once more, the ones along the two flanks run, but the center squad finds itself to be within melta-gun range. The wolf squads seem to be getting assigned different objectives, as the two along the left flank move towards one objective- the two squads located towards the center begin to make a bigger move towards the center objective, and his squad along the right flank begins to move back towards the center of the board. His closest squad draws a bead on the Crusader and opens fire with a melta gun at 12'. Rolls a 5 to hit, then a 6 to pen, then a 6 on the damage table...blowing up the tank in a rather large explosion. I lose no Terminators to the explosion, but the tank was to be the lynch pin in my strategy to take the center part of the table...now I'm fighting for the tie.

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves P6210935

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves DHvsSW_Turn_3_Space_Wolves

Daemon Hunters- Trying to recover from the loss of my Crusader I decide to castle up a bit along my board edge. Unfortunately, one of the raiders manages to immobilize itself on the crater from the Crusader. At this point I figure I need to keep him off my objective, whilst contesting at least one of the remaining two objectives for the tie. My shooting fells three wolves from the center squad this turn- and take down another two wolves along the left flank from shooting. I'm ignoring the dreadnought at this point as it seems intent on doing nothing for the game. At this point I'm feeling pretty good about taking down enough standard wolves to make an assault move in the next turn. Dead wolves claim no objectives.

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves DHvsSW_Turn_3_Daemon_Hunters

Turn Four:
Space Wolves- He moves up his squads to firmly take hold of the two objectives. At this point it's 2-1 Wolves winning. Combined fire from Njal's psychic powers & the cyclone missile launcher claims the two rhinos in my back field. The two IST squads get out and I deploy them in a way where they'll be able to bring their AP 1 weapons to bear on the wolves that moved up to assault the terminators and Grey Knights. Other than this his dreadnought continues to be useless but moves up several inches never the less to keep my raider somewhat in check.

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves DHvsSW_Turn_4_Space_Wolves

Daemon Hunters- I moved the still mobile raider up a bit, while having the all of the PAGK disembark and move forward along with the Terminators. My Raiders and IST's manage to kill more wolves from the center of the board, and several from the flank. Storm-bolter fire and incinerators kill several wolves and the Terminators assault the closest target- the remains of one wolf squad, and the PAGK assault a second nearly intact wolf squad. The Grey Knights do surprisingly well in close combat due to some strange dice rolls on part of my opponent, and the fact that the squads that were assaulted were already bloodied a bit from shooting. The Terminators rip apart the squad they were attacking in a rather rude fashion, with the Grand Master being the star of the group- felling four of the wolves himself. The PAGK wipe out I believe eight wolves, leaving but only one wolf from the squad. Unfortunately only three PAGK remain to fight on (lost 4). The combat on the left flank is equally brutal, with the GK squad also wiping out the enemy to a single wolf, but fair better losing only two Grey Knights in return.

Turn Five:
Space Wolves- As my opponent was clever in the placing of his squads throughout the game- the squad that was moving from the building on the right flank secured the central objective as his terminators and Njal moved in towards the center. His remaining forward center Space Wolves took shots at the GKT killing one. His dread once against proves its' usefulness in missing once more. The wolves then assaulted the GKT, and the remains of the center PAGK squad. The PAGK all but ignore the new threat opting to concentrate on the long wolf survivor- finishing off the squad with relative ease before being cut down by the Wolf Terminators. The Grand Master kill Njal with his force weapon, and the remaining Terminators cut down a few of the enemy terminators as well as the enemy in power armor before all of the Grey Knights in the close combat are eventually cut down in the combat. On the left flank my PAGK finishes off his squad, and moves to re-embark in the Raider.

1850pt Daemon Hunters vs Space Wolves DHvsSW_Turn_5_Space_Wolves

Daemon Hunters- This very well could be the last turn, and well- as I didn't have enough forces left to really do anything. I have three Grey Knights, and 10 IST's as well as two raiders- one immobilized and one still running around. I decided to put it all on the game ending this turn and push my raider up to contest the object on the left flank- blowing up the dreadnought standing confused in the field as I park the tank next to his objective. Were now officially tied.

The dice is rolled and the game ends on turn five. I got lucky to say the least.

Afterthoughts-
My opponent and I discussed what worked/ didn't work for each of during the game. His biggest issue was my Land Raiders- he got incredibly lucky with the melta gun shot that destroyed my Crusader- but other than couldn't do a thing to the tanks. With 6x melta guns and 2x lascannons his list was lacking a bit in long range anti-tank fire. What did work for him however, was once he got in close enough he knew that my Land Raiders could kill a few of his Space Wolves- but do real damage to his strategy- where if managed to kill a single raider/ just one squad of Grey Knights I was in a world of trouble. My list was probably one of the hardest lists he could of gone against- with the high armor value he could only scratch the paint on the tanks for the most part.

My biggest issue on the other hand was his numbers- if I were facing orks, nids, or even guard, my storm bolters and incinerators would of done a lot of damage to help mitigate his high numbers in close combat. However since I was facing Space Wolves I couldn't really accomplish this task and had to rely on him failing saves from storm bolter fire before rushing in. His list was also one of the hardest lists I could of faced due to this reason. Space Wolves are beasts in close combat- and one of his squads can rip a GK squad to shreds for a quarter of the points cost- there is just to many power weapons to deal with- so I have to be careful in where to attack, and he just didn't make any mistakes that I could of taken advantage of.

Another awesome person to play against at the store- and if you can see from the pictures he has some cool conversion work done with fantasy bits throughout his wolves army- making em look a bit more detailed and unique as well as a bit more “Space Wolfish”- defiantly a neat army to play against and one I'm looking forward to playing against again. I want to thank my opponent again for letting me take the pictures and post up pictures of his army in this battle report, the local game store- Grimfoe Games, and Battle Chronicler for the great program which allows me to make such battle reports.

As always thank you for your time, and any comments are always welcome.

Another top-notch batrep Cease. Pics and graphics in one report is a pleasure to see. Well done on the battle as well. I had my doubts that you could even generate enough attacks to make a dent in that wolf-horde but you pulled it off. Fortunately it ended on turn 5 as those SW meltas and fists would really have reaped havoc on your LR's.

Something I've been wondering, what do you use to make those graphics? They really look great!
And despite having fewer points and being outnumbered like that you still did great, after all, it seemed like a great battle.

Thank you all for your comments, it was a really great game to play- and I'm looking forward to facing that opponent again.

Grimhack- The software that I use is called Battle Chronicler. You can dowload it for free on their site, but make sure to also get the extra pack that contains the different hills and other graphics. The program is tricky to learn at first, but after about an hour with it- you'll know almost everything there is to know about the program and be able to turn out Battle Reports fairly quickly.

Thank you all again for your comments and your time,

Interesting but im afraid to say that the SW list was illegal........... He has 4 elite choices, the WG even though they attach to the GH squads they still count as elites so correct me if im wrong but i believe that your opponent had 4 elites choices
