2000 pts. tournament army Empty 2000 pts. tournament army

Post by Tiberius Sat Jan 02, 2010 4:05 pm

Once again I am starting a new topic in the Army List section!

This time, I'm wondering over a 2000 points tournament army I have been knitting together, as I might participate in an upcoming local tournament.

It'll be a water army, of course, and emphasize upon long-range shooting until the enemy gets close, but also offers possibilities to quickly re-deploy so that shootier armies such as the Tau can be crushed under a wave of CC-power. Here it goes;

HQ
- Grey Knight Hero + Retinue (454)
Grand Master "Tiberius" w. Psycannon, Master-Crafted NFW, Icon of the Just, Sacred Incense & Psychic Hood (245)
Retinue
Terminator w. Psycannon (71)
3x Terminator w. Stormbolter (138)

Elites
- Terminator Fire Squad (208)
Brother-Captain "Fauston" w. Psycannon (91)
Terminator "Kiron" w. Stormbolter (46)
Terminator "Gemenos" w. Psycannon (71)

Troops
- PAGK Fire-Support Squad: (226)
Justicar "Joorus" with Targeter (51)
5x PAGK with 2x Psycannons (175)

- PAGK Assault Squad (292)
Justicar "Aqurius" with Frag Grenades, Melta Bombs & Targeter (57)
9x PAGK with 1x Incinerator (235)

- PAGK Assault Squad (292)
Justicar "Whatshisnameius" with Frag Grenades, Melta Bombs & Targeter (57)
9x PAGK with 1x Incinerator (235)

Heavy Support (528)
Land Rider "Horadrus" with Dozer, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers Blades and Extra Armour (264)
Land Rider "Infuriati" with Dozer Blades, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers and Extra Armour (264)

2000

So, against an air- or firearmy, I'd deploy everything I have (unless we'd go by Dawn of War ofcourse) in such a manner that my assault squads form a gunline before the enemy army, and in the case of a spearhead deployment, slightly tilted to cover my flanks. Preferably, they would be in cover, so that they'd gain protection as well as being able to receive an enemy charge more effectively. My Psycannon PAGKs set up next to my objective should the mission I play use such. Directly behind my gunline, my terminators set up as far back as their Psycannons allow them, to utilize the shrouding. My Land Raiders set up on both sides of the gunline, to let the assault squads to re-deploy in a matter of seconds should this prove to be necessary.

In the case of me facing an earth army, the deployment will be different. My terminators will be held in reserve, while my A-PAGKs seat themselves in my Raiders for outflanking the enemy. My F-PAGKs will just stay behind cover, preferably outside LoS. My Land Raiders pop their smokes, fires a single godhammer each, and in the following turns, my assault squads gives the enemy hell in cc while my terminators deep strike behind them, and uses their Psycannons against the targets posing most of a threat towards my forces, be it an enemy vehicle or a squad.

This is basicly a water-army able to field up as any of the elements, and the above tactic is not the one I'd prefer against an earth army, but is the most effective one if there's a lack of LoS-blocking terrain.

Now, do you suggest any changes? I've been thinking of swapping the Psycannons in the GMs squad for a couple of incinerators, if I intend to deepstrike them. In that case, I would also relocate the psychic hood to my brother captain, since it would be necessary to keep it away from the danger CC and deep-striking poses. Once again, how can I optimize the list? sunny

i would put 1 Termi with SS/TH in every termi squad
and use 1 LRC for the GM and retinue
but except that i won't change a iota of your list

I'm not that much for Crusaders really. I mean, sure, they pack as much firepower as an eight-man Space Marines Squad with two heavy bolters, and can fire three weapons a turn despite how far it has moved, but, since the Land raiders are my only heavy anti-tank units in the army, I'll stick to them. Besides, none of my units are too large to fit in the classic raider. Or, do you suggest I add a Raider?

The TH/SS suggestion works well, I suppose. I'd just have to get myself a pair of blisters with such models first.

no my suggestion was to replace one of your LR, but if you love them and play well with them .... keep them ! no problem (it was just suggestions, and my first advice was : play what gives you joy and fun Wink )
for the SS/TH : you can find a blister of 5 of each on the online store ( normally for PASM but it could be used for Termies as well ... i've bought them too Razz )

Aye, I will buy a TH/SS blister eventually. Next time I buy anything else from GWs site, I suppose. Or, I could just convert me a few! Razz

And sure, the crusader could provide more space and a few more rounds, but it would mean all my anti-tank capabilities would be placed on one tank, and would it be taken out, I wouldn't have any other choice than getting my APAGKs into assault with the vehicles and hope for decent Melta Bomb rolls.

I would probably drop a knight from the incinerator squads and give all the squads unguents of warding... But that may be because I'm used to face eldar seer councils and daemon princes.
But besides that little thing it's pretty much what I would take!

Aye, I see your point. Do you suggest I drop two so that I can give the unguents to all squads in the army? Giving me 2 9-man units instead of 2 10-man... I suppose that would be preferable, since my GM might be targeted with those nastier instant death spells. Razz

Here's a revamped list;

HQ
- Grey Knight Hero + Retinue (464)
Grand Master "Tiberius" w. Psycannon, Master-Crafted NFW, Icon of the Just, Sacred Incense, Unguents of Warding & Psychic Hood (255)
Retinue
Terminator w. Psycannon (71)
3x Terminator w. Stormbolter (138)

Elites

Brother-Captain "Fauston" w. Psycannon & Unguents of Warding (101)
Terminator "Kiron" w. Stormbolter (46)
Terminator "Gemenos" w. Psycannon (71)

Troops
- PAGK Fire-Support Squad: (236)
Justicar "Joorus" with Targeter & Unguents of Warding (61)
5x PAGK with 2x Psycannons (175)

- PAGK Assault Squad (277)
Justicar "Aqurius" with Frag Grenades, Melta Bombs, Unguents of Warding & Targeter (67)
8x PAGK with 1x Incinerator (210)

- PAGK Assault Squad (277)

I say you should run with the first list with the extra bodies. If you already have the psychic hood I wouldn't take the unguents unless you knew beforehand you were going to face a psychic-heavy army. How many times does one actually go up against a Seer Council in a given amount of games?

Yes true but it's just a matter of opinion. I like to know that there is little chance that nasty lashes and massive damage psychic powers get through and rely more on moving and hoping your mind doesn't stop cooperating and making you forget things.
It's all up to the player himself ofcourse. There are many effective lists that can't be used by alot of other players.

Yeah, I guess it comes down to what a player has experienced and gone up against. In the dozen or so tournies I've been in so far I've seen a player field a Seer Council just once. I've played against CSM's at least a dozen times and rarely even see a Daemon Prince. And of those that did have one none had Lash. In fact, in almost 50 tournie games I may have taken an Aegis roll less than half a dozen times. I guess since I've been exposed to little psychic stuff, anti-psychic wargear is not high on my priority list.

*Nod* Well, I'll keep the Psych hood, just in case I face some fishy Eldar feeling lucky (*Hint* Fortune *Hint*). Otherwise, what do you think of the list as a whole? Razz The first list in the original post, that is. Smile

As I said before, it's a good list. But that doesn't mean it'll work. After quite some games it'll get better every time.
Personally I also gain more from a defeat then from a win aswell. (Unless if it was just bad luck obviously)

It's a good list. I agree w/ Nemesisforce regarding overloading against psychic powers. My GM always has a psychic hood though just like yours and that's usually enough.

My 2000 pt list is actually very similar to yours although I run slightly smaller PAGK squads (7 each) and have a little more GKTs and a dread in addition to the 2 LRs. So far, it hasn't lost yet so hopefully you'd have a fairly similar success rate in the tournament. Good luck! Very Happy

Weighing in a bit late but nice list, I'm a fan of the normal LR's too seeing as how we lack in AT, and while I think that the TH/SS is interesting I personally wouldn't ever take it as its only advantage is locking a EW HQ/MC out of its attacks for a few rounds, relying on luck to survive, and manage to score a wound.
Our SS are also terrible.

Thanks for the comment, Brother Zeal. And you're right, our TH/SS isn't... enough, so to say. I'd rather have another stormbolter, and stay at range.

I've decided to move one NFW-armed PAGK from each assault squad to the fire-support squad. Just to ensure they can survive a lil' longer.

Thats probably a good idea, PAGK are never squishy but a smaller firebase squad like that might tempt someone to DS in and try and take them out.
A few extra bodies and it won't be worth most peoples while. Those who do try will probably regret it too Razz

Indeed. I am quite tempted to somehow add in an Inquisitor with a couple of mystics. I'd love the look on the enemies face when he/she realizes I've burnt of 6 Strombolters and 2 Psycannons at his DS'ing troops before they could even make a move.
