Ruin Empty Ruin

Post by Brother-Captain Validi Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:02 pm

Ruin - A tale of heroes in the darkest of times, known only to the Grey Knights and the survivors of the Wolf Lord Audun's Great Company, even though the whole galaxy was in the utmost peril. This account must never find it's way to the unworthy's ears.

I'll write small bits at a time.
Each chapter will have a different post.
Status: 1st chapter is finished!!! 2nd chapter will appear sometime soon hopefully

One

The planet was warzone. Alien feet clawed over its ashen surface, killing off the planets previous owners. At the Southern coast of the main continent, the representatives of humanity made their last stand. The fortress had never fallen and it stood tall and proud among the ruins of the surrounding city. Lasguns flashed among the alleys and streets, men and women of the Planetary Defence Force desperately trying to hold off the invaders until support arrived. Buildings fell, and they were forced back to the very gates of the fortress, and no help came. The mighty walls were breached, and no help came. The last man on the planet gave his life for the Imperium, and no help came. The expansion of the Tau Empire continued. And the Saga of Audun truly began.

“Are we there yet,” For a dozen days I have endured this question, but no longer. Whump! ”Ahh!” That’s much better. Now then, where’s that Iron priest? Probably in his quarters, tinkering away at his age old artefacts, no doubt. I’ve no idea how he managed to sneak our Belt of Russ back from that bloody thieving Techpriest.

“You there, where’s Iron Priest Ærinmund?” He better not be in the “Cavern”

“Ærinmund, he’s in the cavern, O Wolf Lord,” …Damn. At least this Claw knows some respect, not many of the young ones can endure such a journey without killing something.

The Wolf Lord Audun, for it was he, opened the great wooden doors to the “Cavern” which, in truth, was not a cave as its name would suggest. Instead, it consisted of a long room containing a long oaken table. The walls were covered in banners, wolfskins and other such trophies. As usual, a few of the more decorated Grey Hunters were seated around the table along with the Long Fangs, Auduns Wolf Guard and the senior members of the Great Company. And, as usual, there were more than a few tankards on the table and in the hands of the Wolves. Most of the barrels at the rear end of the room, which should have held enough beer for 3 months since they left Fenris, were now almost empty. As soon as Audun opened the door he had to close it, as he had spotted a tankard flying towards his head. Stepping over the puddle of beer, grinning, he shouted over the din.

“Iron Priest Ærinmund! Get your drunken ass over here; I won’t come to you, for the stench of your fellow beer appreciators would surely knock me out!” Laughter followed this statement and a figure detached himself from the throng and staggered over to the Lord.

“Aye milord?” The Priest was having trouble standing. Audun wondered if he could take up the task he had for him.

“I need you to follow me to the brig section; we’re going to find out when we arrive”

“Why me milord?” Audun sighed in exasperation. The Priest was to drunk to even think properly.

“Because, you’re the only one the Navigators will talk to, remember?”

“Oh, right, sorry milord, let’s get going then, we need to find out how long it is before planetfall, we’re almost out of beer and may need to ration the reminder of it. I swear that the Hunters are much thirstier than the last lot,” He marched off, leaving Audun astounded. He thought, how is it that the man is so full of beer he can barely stand, and yet, when more beer is hinted at, he’s off like a shot. Shaking his head, Audun realised something, and called after Ærinmund.

“Ærinmund, that’s the way to the Drop Pod bay, you won’t find beer in the Warp, and even if you do, it’ll have Nurgles puke in it!”

“You hear that? We could be getting off this ship soon, and right into the action! I can’t wait to take an Ork. I’ll bet that I kill it in less than 5 seconds, no matter the size!”

“If it doesn’t rip your big head off your neck first. Me, I want to fight Chaos. I want payback for the heresy!”

The two Blood Claws, whom had eavesdropped on the Lords conversation from behind a statue of Russ, continued to regale each other of their future exploits, using knowledge they had only just learned in their initiation into the Chapter to further their prowess in the battles to come. As Audun and Ærinmund walked off in the right direction, the Claws stood up and moved out of their hiding place.

“I’m telling you Erik, an Eldar would have no chance if I shot it in the head at point blank range.”

“And I’m telling you Kætilfast, they have all these weird psychic powers, they could just stop the Bolt, or jam your pistol.”

“Not all of them, for the majority, it would result in instant death as the Bolt enters their skull, blows up, mushifies their brains and leaves the poor Eldar with an exploding face. As his or her blood splatters over his or her compatriots, they break, run away, and I run ‘em all down, and kill ‘em. Easy.”

“Killing them all when they’re running away, not very honourable is it?”

“Shut up-WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!!!” The ship lurched to one side, knocking the two Claws down. Doors smashed open and confused Space Wolves floated out of them a second later. “WHERE’S THE GRAVITY?!” Yelled Kætilfast, now suspended in midair.

“Who cares, this is great!” replied Eric, who was chasing a beer sphere which had floated out of the “Cavern”. An Imperial marching tune had begun to play on hidden speakers. It was stuck, replaying the same second of music, over and over.

“Hey, someone give the ship a shove!” Bellowed a vexed voice from the “Cavern”, and surprisingly, the tune skipped, and began to play the rest of the song. Then gravity returned. Eric fell flat on the floor, looked up, and the beer drenched his face. Kætilfast then came down on top of Eric.

“Argh! Get off!”

“Sorry,” The music stopped, and Auduns voice surrounded them.

“We have arrived, but the Tau now control the planet, we are too late. Many humans have willingly died, but so long as we are here, they shall not have gone to their deaths needlessly. The Taus main fleet appears to have moved off to another planet so the approach should be fairly smooth. Planetfall is in 3 hours. Everyone, get to your respective stations, and someone go the “Cavern” and hurry my Guard up – if you have a death wish! You will be told your Drop zone by your sergeant, and for Russ’s sake Halldor, don’t send your Blood Claws out the nearest airlock this time.”

“Hah, can’t wait to see them going past the window. Hold on, he’s our sergeant!” Exclaimed Kætilfast, now in a panic. No-one had said anything about an airlock to him before.

“Don’t worry; I’m sure he’s kidding,” said Eric in an upbeat tone, although he looked somewhat uneasy, and Kætilfast could smell it in his altered scent.

“Great, we’re going to die.”

It's just how Space Wolves are like, really! But I can't explain the Gravity failure and music, unless Ærinmund tried to mess around with something on the bridge, because he's drunk it's a wonder they're all still alive!

The forum has turned into quite the literary society lately. This is good. I've read the first two Space Wolves novels and you've captured the spirit quite well B-C Validi. Looking forward to reading more.
