Post by Inquisitor Grit Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:32 am

Actually, I am what you would either call a Boot or a Noob (depending what you do and where you hail from). I literally just bought
my first squad of Grey Knights. They are also my first anything ever of the Tabletop Warhammer 40k. Never done a tabletop game before.
Anyways, I was wondering if I could possibly recieve some pointers/help as far as what all I should get...

It was a bit premature for me to buy the GK, being as I have no materials whatsoever. No paint, tools, grass-stuffs, nothing. I ordered the Codex and the RuleBook, and await them in the series of crazy connected tubethings that is the American Postal System. I guess I am just looking for a place to start. Tabletop 40k is quite a daunting place, especially for someone just crossing the threshold. Any tips and or guidance in the right (or best) direction would be much appreciated.

Post Script- If this is in the wrong forum, please move it. I figured this would be the best spot seeing as it is just Warhammer 40k in general.

Greetings Brother, welcome to the forums. I myself did the very same thing as well. Started over the summer with a box of grey knights to start off with the seemingly daunting game of 40k.

As far as what to get, I suggest getting another box of a Grey Knights squad box, and either a blister of the Brother-Captain Stern miniature or if you feeling like spending a bit more, a pack of Grey Knight Terminators. Of course Stern is a special character that you won't be able to field until a game where the army totals are at 1500 Points, but you can proxy him as a Grey Knight Hero (Brother Captain or Grand Master) until you gain more pieces. This being said, you'll need a minimum of an HQ (Which could be used by either Stern or the Squad leader from the Grey Knight Terminators), and two Troop choices (Grey Knight squads).

That should help you start off your own army, but as you'll soon notice, you won't have much in the ways of Anti-Vehicle weapons, but that is what both the Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders are for. They're not infantry, but they are the only things we have that can be counted on for their Anti-Vehicle weapons.

Either way, have fun playing around with them for a bit and see how it works out for you

Good luck and once again, welcome to the forums.

I want to primarily field a GK army. I like the entire concept of a holy, incorruptible band of warriors. The Few and The Proud plays a bit close to my heart, so I want to have nothing but Grey Knights. Maybe eventually I will branch out into the Inquisition (Throne knows I absolutely love the sheer power and respect they wield), but short term I want GK.

The best first step of any game is to read the rules through and then read them again. But besides this little boring fact, what was pointed out above should already be some help towards your first rule-legal-game-ready army.
Painting and assembling in 40k can be as easy or hard as you want to make it, you could just paint them with flat colours or you could go as far as advanced techniques. Assembling just the same, you can assemble them without any extras or you can convert and add stuff to give them more character.
If there are other questions I'm sure you can find plenty of answers on this forum and if you don't find it anyway then you can always ask like you did.
Good luck on the knights!

Welcome Brother! Both to the forums and to the world of 40K Very Happy

As our fellow Brothers have already mentioned, you'll need to do your homework by reading through both the codex and the rulebook to familiarize yourself w/ the mechanics of the game and how our Grey Knights can thrive in this system. You're on the right track w/ your GK squad box. Another box and BC Stern or a GKT in a blister can give you your HQ and you'll be ready to start a low-point game.

Like Brother Aubec mentioned, the most important rule is HAVE FUN!!! Please feel free to keep your questions coming. We have a very knowledgeable and friendly band of brothers here Very Happy

Welcome to our sacred home Brother Grit; you are well on your way to purging the Heretical and Daemons of the warp!

Out of curiosity, what got you into the Grey Knights? I like you started with 5 PAGK, and I highly suggest you get another box as well as the Grey Knight Terminator box so you can start fielding them in games.

Lore wise, hopping into Ben Counters "Grey Knight Omnibus" is a great place to start. If you like the Inquisition, reading the Eisenhorn omnibus will be most enjoyable and interesting.

Feel free to inquire about anything, our Brothers here are steeped with knowledge to help guide you down the path of the righteous Very Happy

Greetings new little brother (actually we're the same age, but it sounds cooler)

Welcome to the coolest chapter around, i hope you will find wisdom in this place full of light hearted fellow knights (and a few corrupted ones, coughEzekielcough)

Remember that you might get a few things wrong, like me, in the beginning i thought you had to buy the standard weapons from the armoury for your troops.
My first opponet thought i had very few ork boys for an ork army.

If you wonder something ask, we will give you good ideas and suggestions to the best of our abilities.

I and a few others are more into the painting i believe and have whole threads in the painting section full of interesting ideas and painted minis.

I have created a tutorial to make grey knight terminators that is very detailed and can be found here.
https://greyknights.forumotion.com/painting-tips-models-f6/klomster-s-monster-tutorial-for-grey-knight-terminators-t1161.htm

I go trough all the basics and some advanced stuff, so most people can get good things out of it.

Anyway, again, welcome to the forum and the hobby, have fun while you stay.

Huzzah!

Welcome Brother. Feel free to read around the forums and ask as many questions as you want, we're here for you!

As for suggestions, I suggest starting with a few combat patrols (400 pt games that limit what people can take, great to just learn the game or if you have limited forces) or regular 500-750 point games, just to get the feel of the army. my combat patrols run about 12 models, and even at 1000 I have under 25, so it's easy to get to that point. I find we pretty much backpedal and shoot until the enemy is weak, then charge, but many people play us differently. Definitely read http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=101214.

You can never go wrong with some regular GK boxes, 2 psycannon PAGK (PAGK is our basic troop, GK in power armor), 2 incinerator PAGK, a termie or 4, and a dreadnought or LR. These models will let you vary up your basic lists a bit to see what you like, while covering pretty much all of your bases. Check online for deals, but don't forget about your local store! Alot have discounts if you buy a few things at once that make them pretty comparable to online deals.

Welcome and best of luck!

I have read the Eisenhorn books, the Ravenor books, All the Gaunt's Ghosts books, and am in the process of reading The Grey Knights Omnibus. I just like Holy Warriors in general, individuals fighting for the faith and uncorruptible and whatnot.

By the way, I have just ordered GK Omnibus... I will read in Shaekspear's mother tongue.... affraid

Yep, that's what I thought, I'll have to get it to!

The french editor of BL (Bibliothèque Interdite) seems to focus on Horus heresy serie, and it may be quite long until they turn to =I=nquisition...
Ravenor and Eisenhorn were translated since, I think, Dark Heresy was about to come out..., who knows, if a new GK comes.....
