2000 pts vs. IG in Hong Kong Empty 2000 pts vs. IG in Hong Kong

As the Grey Knights Strike Cruiser Fortis Eterna breaks through the severe warp storms, the astropaths aboard immediately detected the distress messages from the Imperial stronghold from the besieged world below. The ruinous powers have sent their agents to slaughter the Emperor's loyal citizens. The final defense lines have been drawn and only the capital hive city still stands but is completely surrounded and besieged. Local intel revealed that a sizeable force of traitor guard are enroute to the capital hive city to reinforce the attackers. Grandmaster Rivan will personally lead a strike force to intercept and destroy the traitorous guard.

2000 pt IG list
Not sure about the exact breakdown because he had a LOT of infantry but roughly...
1 company command squad (5 models)
2 infantry platoons totaling 61 models w/ 10 lascannons
4 x 10-man veteran squads (8 plasma guns)
3 x 10-man stormtrooper squads (6 plasma guns)
All the platoon squads and veteran squads had commissars.
Total: 136+ models

I'm going to deviate a little from my standard batreps of turn by turn reporting and just do a detailed summary because the game became almost just one big melee. My opponent won the die roll and elected to go first. He deployed his 2 infantry platoons as 2 really big units. Several squads in each platoon all rolled up into 1 unit (I didn't even know you could do that). This at least reduced the kill points he can give up. However, he deployed them almost at the 24" line (???). I deployed nothing...which confused him it seems. I already knew the results of the 1st turn would determine the game. The rest of his units moved up and ran from his board edge (along w/ the 6 lascannons) while the 3 ST squads will DS. I moved up all my units from the board edge. The LR's (carrying Squad Remus and squad Uriel) moved up 12" right in front of the 2 large guard units and popped smoke. On his next shooting, the 4 lascannons in the big IG units fired and did nothing to the LRs. At this point I already had the advantage. The only variable is how successful the ST are going to be. I moved the LRs some more and disembarked both units and after doing all my shooting, assaulted. These 2 assaults would actually last several turns because of the size of the units and the presence of the commissars. The commissars actually worked better for me because his units stayed tied up and gave me enough turns to shoot at his other units.
The first ST squad DS on target and opened up on Squad Raguiel (4 pg shots, 1 pp shot, & 14 AP3 shots). It would have been perfect except Justicar Raguiel and 1 PAGK survived, who in my turn, avenged their brothers by assaulting and cutting down (sweeping advance) the whole ST squad. His 2nd and 3rd ST squad came in next turn. One squad took down the remaining 2 from Squad Raguiel and the other squad scored well with the pg shots and downed 3 of Rivan's retinue. Ancient Brother Garius moved and incinerated most of the 2nd ST squad and assaulted and finished the squad off while Rivan & his last bodyguard charged the 3rd ST squad and killed 7. The unit failed leadership and was trapped by my LR and was destroyed.
The rest of the game was almost academic. I stayed at the periphery of my SB range and started whittling his units down. Eventually, when squad Remus and squad Uriel finished off their combat (in my opponent's assault phase Very Happy ), they just moved on to the next squads, shot and engaged. One of his lascannon teams was actually able to destroy one the LRs though. The other lascannon team never fired a single shot because I was able to completely stay out of LOS Razz
Final score: GK - 8 IG -3 Solid victory for the Grey Knights!

I think my opponent made just one HUGE mistake...deploying almost halfway to my table edge. I couldn't believe it...he was making my job easier. And maybe he should have planned about DSing the ST a little better. It was a big gamble and he ended giving up 3 kill points and managing only 1.

Fine victory Rivan and congratulations. That definitely was a major mistake on the IG players part as whittling your GK's down with multiple turns of fire would have been much more effective. I applaud him though for fielding an infantry-heavy army rather than the mech-melta spam.

Well played Brother Rivan! I love reading your batreps, always have a nice spin to them. Charging to try to meet the Grey Knights half way was particularly unwise Very Happy

Good work keeping your LR out out LOS; complete denial to the enemy!

Good luck against Chaos Brother; I look forward to reading about it! Purge them!
