Sportsmanship
We are having a big discussion here about sportsmanship...
some players says that sportsmanships scores are a waste, and claim that it would be removed, because the idea of a tournament is win, no matter how or what...
but others, like me, believes that the game is a game, I mean, just fun, and we go to play to have fun, not to get stress and annoys people...
I really want to hear your opinion, brothers.

Re: Sportsmanship
The game is a game. This is my personal point of view.
40k was never meant to be a tournament style game, but thats just what some people play it as. If they want to cheat and create beardy cheese armies, well, thats their choice.
As for me, I'm in it for the fun.

Re: Sportsmanship
Beardy cheese (especially those cheating eldar and tau) armies that only has one goal and that is WIN!!!!!! WIN!!!!!! I..... MUST.... WIN!!!!!!!
That's just boring, i wan't awesome combats and remeberable events.
F'ex, when my grand master took 3 rounds of shooting from an entire Tau army.
Or when they terminators held their ground while beeing charged many times resulting in beeing charged 4 times by 36-40 genestealers and killing almost all of them!
Or that time when my justicar ran up to a deamon prince and slew him in one grand swoop.
That's why i play, for the awesome.
Not the.
Ooooh an eldar, i will kill him.
-Bluä bluä bluä!!!! I'm eldar!!!! Hiuppp!!! Is the stuff the eldar say and then my army dies in second round.
Yay!... It's so funny.
Or Tau, -Brum brum bruuum, we drive flying fish ships! We can't die becouse we cheat!!! Hahaha. Now we shoot you with our overpowered too cheap weapons!!!!
-Hahahaha!!!!! We are the fish heads. *Knocks their chests together* -BOOOYAAAAA!!!
And i sit there in a corner crying.
(Well, not that bad but sometimes everything just becomes boring)
I can be a really funny dude too play against, no worries, i can take losses, that's what i do most of the time.
But when my models just die of stupid, extremely boring stuff and i can do nothing about it i sometimes become sad.
And when i become sad when playing i go silent, boring, and melancholic.
Only some really awesome stuff from my characters can save such a situation. Or if the enemy is nice and lets my last model charge or something.
I'm in for awesome fun, but sometimes, i only get crappy boring.

Re: Sportsmanship
I play 40k for fun, it's pretty shit to have a stupid player who uses every loop hole in the rulebook to either kill you or avoid being killed. It just ruins the fun of the game.
"The warrior who acts out of honour cannot fail. His honour is duty itself. Even his death - if it is honourable - is a reward and can be no failure, for it has come through duty. Seek honour as you act, therefore, and you will know no fear."
Re: Sportsmanship
Yeah, i hate those tourney-rule-fcukers. I´m playing for fun and i don´t mine for a 1/4". I don´t care if i win or lose as long as i got a good fight. My last game with my GK was a lose. All i had left of my 1750 points was my GM, but hell, i slaughtered a lot of my opponents (traitor) IG. Only 400 points had be left.

Re: Sportsmanship
Straight from the dictionary....
Game: "A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators."
Keyword: amusement
Tournament: "A series of contests in which a number of contestants compete and the one that prevails through the final round or that finishes with the best record is declared the winner."
Keyword: winner (note that amusement or fun are not mentioned)
I thought that was pretty telling, all in all... ultimately, I've found that all of my opponents can be divided into two categories: gamers, and competitors. Gamers play for the fun of everyone, including both players and the spectators. Competitors play for themselves, and only for themselves, as there can be only one winner. *cue Highlander music*

Re: Sportsmanship
That is so true!
Too bad Tournamenters are a bit too win win when playing for fun sometimes.
And too bad i'm a bit to gamerish at tournaments all the time!
I make the others who partisipate go further in the tourney anyway!

Re: Sportsmanship
I like to win just a s much as anybody but what kind of person bitches about sportsmanship? Must be a bunch of powergamers who always win Best General but can never win Best Overall because they totally suck in the Best Sportsman category.
Tactics: All good in theory, all gone to hell in practice.
Re: Sportsmanship
If you go to tournaments expect a competitive environment.
If you're on the top tables, kudos to you but at that level people have somthing to lose so get edgy.
On the middle tables it tends to be different with more people playing for fun as the event goes on and they realise they're not going to win the event.
The bottom tables tend to also be edgy with a mixture of new players, weak lists and the unlucky. These people tend to just not want to lose, some face saving, etc.
As to sportsmanship, I believe it should be done at the end of the weekend with each player having one vote for their most sporting opponent.
Sportsmanship shouldn't affect the winner, it should be a seperate category.

Re: Sportsmanship
nice discussion here with my brothers, just like the one we are having in my country...
I love win, but this a game with dice, and around here, we are almost all agree that the idea is having fun, not just win no mater how or what.

Re: Sportsmanship
All games are a compitition by their very nature some of us are highly competitive jerks with a bag of dice and an army to back us up. I personaly love to crush the life from my enemies and the enemies of the Emperor. That being said I lose games and have alot of fun doing so if it is a good game. everybody is different, and we will have to deal with the assholes and the cool dudes as well. And I am O.K. with that. As long as I win. LOL
Re: Sportsmanship
I respect people at tourneys wanting to win, but when they do win/lose i'd like for them to not be a sore loser or an arsehole when they do win. Gaming is about winning but it's also a chance to socialize and have FUN!

Re: Sportsmanship
I actually often care little if i win, i'm in for a fun fight!
And if it doesn't end up like that, i can try again next match!

Re: Sportsmanship
Last night I played my very first 40k game and the gentlemen I played with and against exemplified sportsmanship to the max. My opponents helped me along just as much my allies did and made my first blooding an enjoyable experience. One even suggested I move my Incinerator template over a 1/4" so as to get a possible glancing hit on his own Rhino in addition to his Chaos Marines I was already targeting. I hope tournie organizers don't start to listen to anti-sportsmanship players as guys like I played with last night deserve to be recognized. They and their attitudes are damn good for the hobby.
