Although I'm light years away from fielding a GK army big enough for a Grand Master I have given a little thought as to his gear. I'm leaning him towards close combat (no-brainer there) so frag grenades for sure and melta bombs for any a/t. I'm definitely going to master-craft his NF weapon to reduce the chances of missing with that glorious, shining, cracklin' piece of psychic death-energy. Though I don't like the risks I'm thinking of Holocaust as well. Anything to maximixe his chances of winning any close combats.

Edit: Won't be taking frags and meltas. Just realized models in Termie armor can't take them.
Tactics: All good in theory, all gone to hell in practice.

I would have 2 versions for a Grand Master

The first is for a heavily deamonified army so guess what...
MASTER-CRAFTED DAEMONHAMMER!!!!! Cool also a Psycannon, Grimoire of True Names, Icon of the Just and Sacred Incence and "Sanctuary or Destroy Deamon"
(it may cost a hell of a lot but it may well be worth it if you're facing off against an avatar (you hit him on a 3+, wound on a 2+, and if you assault first you get 5 attacks and if you have DD you can re-roll to hits and to wounds!!!))

and the second is for general use
NFW + storm bolter, psycannon bolts(can also be taken for justicars)

hmm... you can tell which one I put most work into...

Master crafted nfw.
Psycannon bolts.
Psychic hood.
Holocaust.
Icon of the just.
hmmm, might have sacred insence.

I mights have forgotten something.

Check the points, if they reach over 240, it's a match.

Since I field 2 LR and there is an increasing tendency of deep sriking antitank units like Chaos termies, Swooping Hawks, Crisis suits.

I field an elite Inq
Elite Inq bp+pw weapon
3 IG, 2 meltas 1 plasma
1 astropath
in a rhino

I make them go behind the LR, the in turn 2 onwards I use the Rhino to block some LOS and destroy any deepstriking unit thnx to meta and plasma, then if necesary I convert them in Tank hunters (specially against tanks that need to get closer like predators baal or Ass cannon dreads) And if there are still some scattered units the PW on the inq is always a surprise.

Why take a psycic hood? You got the Aegis Suit. Youy can only use one or the other. I'd give him a Master Crafted NFW, Psycannon Bolts, A Psycic power of some kind, Bionics and Icon of the Just.

About My GM I try not to get very exited

NFW+Icon of just+ Inscence+ Combimelta

NFW= are you kidding me? Force weapon on str 6 Razz
Icon= Just to stay more time on the table
Inscence= There are lots of chaos players and this is the ONLY unversal wargear, for 10 pts you get to go first Razz
Combimelta: I will not miss the extra Bolter round very much, however a well placed Melta that hits on 2+ could win his points back (against an incoming dread or to get the last wound out of a Monstruous creature, or simply kill that anoying Oblit), beats combiplasma because you already have Lots of bolter fire and Psycannons, so a hidden Melta works wonders.

But the psychic hood can help my storm troopers and annoy the oponets self-helping powers.

The psychic hood can stop all powers not just the ones targeted on you! Wich is what the aegis do.

He has a psychic power and bionics would be nice, but i would take sacred insence instead if i had the points, i now remember him not having it.

Klomster, 240 on a character might be too much, how many points do you play? Does he win his points back? If you are using him mostly for the Psy Hood and the Psy Cannon then go Brother Captain, if you go Close combat try not to spend that many points because they can be lost quickly on a hidden PW fist or PW claw, maybe you will win the CC but you will lose nearly a LR in ponts and I don't think the squad you went against is over 250 (on the whole).

I would like to hear you experiences in combat.

He is almost only 2000 pts matches.

He dies horribly sometimes, one time he killed 3 obliterators, 1 chaos lord, 1'5 defilers.

Sometimes he owns sometimes he dies so horribly the universe is mutated into a jelly bean.

It's almost always my rolls, if i roll good, i win, if i roll as normal, i die.

We go back to "It's all in the dice", not many characters will give you near assured victory, like Kharn or Abbadon.

I remember when my callie killed 3 Oblits in 1 turn (sweet!), or when my last dread with LC rolled consecutives 6 against a chaos LR (that was my only lascannon left).

So be kind with you dices, even if they some times screw you up, you never know when they can pull out a miracle or two.

My gm killed Kharn when Kharn charged him once.

I saved 3 of 4 wounds suffered frm the attacks on my Icon of the just.

Then i bashed him good!

Good times.

I lost the match though! I think.

My thoughts on the Grand Master...

Melee Weapon: Without a doubt, the Nemesis Force Weapon is the best bet here. Scoring even a single wound gives a 5 out of 6 chance of slaying the model irrevocably. This is NOT the place to put your army's Daemonhammer -- it's much better to kill them outright then to simply delay their retaliation. Daemonhammers are for Inquisitors and Brother Captains, not Grand Masters. Master Crafted weapons are nice here, to balance out the occasional poor dice roll, but with 4 attacks per round, he'll probably kill everything he can reach anyway, so it's very situational. All in all, he's great as-is, but Master Craft can be nice if you've got the spare points.

Ranged Weapon: Here, you have several option, most of which are variants on the Psycannon theme. The 36" Heavy 3 variant is nearly useless here, as it effectively encourages you to keep him out of melee combat -- if that's your plan, a Brother Captain would work just as well, and be a hell of a lot cheaper. The 18" Assault 3 Psycannon is a very viable option, so long as he's fielded as an Independent Character, since it's a pain in the ass to have him shooting at a shorter range than the rest of his unit. If he is alone, however, 2+ to hit and 2+ to wound is pretty sexy. If in a retinue, I'd advise the ever-practical Psycannon Bolts. A compromise between power and efficiency, they give you a 24" option that still ignores those pesky Invulnerable saves. So here, choose based on where you field him. Alone? Psycannon. Retinue? Just the bolts, please.

Other Wargear: For some reason, the vast majority of the Grey Knights Wargear is highly situational. I'll go through a few of the better options... First, the Grimoire of True Names is a must ONLY if facing armies with LARGE Daemons in them. That reduction in WS plus the power of a Force Weapon equals a 200 point Daemon Prince down the drain in one Assault Phase. Against smaller daemons, however, the effect of the Grimoire just isn't effective enough to warrant its point cost on a model that's already this expensive. The Psychic Hood is a great army-wide Aegis effect on a model unlikely to die, so you should probably bring one along if you're fielding several units of Inquisitorial Stormtroopers, but in a pure Grey Knight force, leave it out. Sacred Incense is a life saver when facing Chaos, but useless against all other comers.

Retinue: All said and done, Terminators are the most cost-efficient troops in the Grey Knight force, and you can never have too many of these guys. That being said, I advise taking the largest retinue you can afford in all scenarios except one: the ranged Psycannon-wielding Grand Master. If you're going this route, make sure to bring a vehicle along and have him follow an inch or two behind it, so he's untargetable. For all others, however, Terminators are the way to go. They add unbelievable punch to your army, and no fire zone is too hot for them. They especially make wonderful Deep Strike units -- most units would get maybe one target from the back lines before being swallowed whole by the enemy army, but with a Grand Master and his Terminator Retinue, they can provide a very unexpected anvil for the remainder of your forces to smash against. They don't break, and they rarely die, which makes them perfect for disrupting the carefully laid formations of your opponent. I suppose you could make an argument for Deep Striking a Grand Master alone to take out a Greater Daemon, but he'll get swarmed under as soon as it's dead, and the Grand Master is too expensive and too prestigious to be turned into nothing more than a human Lictor. Give him a retinue, so that when the Daemon's dead, he can continue his Force Weapon fueled swath of carnage.

That's my two cents! Hope it helps. Cool

Nice GM opinions Doom. Has anyone ever tried an elite inquisitor with Termie Armor and mastercraft Combi/melta, for about 70 pts you might deepstrike a twin melta near an anoying tank. I've never tried it but the idea came to me awhile ago, maybe I will try him next weekend.
