SoB Seraphim Squad question

Post by DarkRonin on Mon Nov 02, 2009 4:01 am

I was looking at an alternative to having FAGKs and came upon the Seraphim as a potential unit that can deepstrike, and possesses good movment which would be useful in flanking taking out tanks and the like. But after reading the weapons load out, I've noticed that it says nothing about what the Sister Superior is loaded out with at no extra point costs like all of the other Superiors out there. And after looking over the squad box on the GWS site, it left me feeling a bit odd. I've read over the various units and found that the default weapons all say the same thing with the sole exception being the Seraphim (And the ISTs of course but they don't need to have a Vet at all).

I'd really just like a confirm if my suspicions being that the Superior involved in the squad box is really a Vet and not a normal one.

They are a Veteran Sister Superior. Its the only way to get a power sword into the squad. In my opinion this sucks, but what can you do?

Thank you Brother clarifying this for me. It just seemed rather odd to begin with since the Superior is required, but Upgrading it to a Vet isn't required unless you just buy the set then.

lol FAGKs, I know I'm immature Razz

From the codex entry it appears that upgrading does not give you any bonus wargear, you will have to buy powerswords yourself (which sucks).

You are not required to upgrade the unit to a Veteran Superior, it just say you "may" upgrade the sister superior, I don't think its worth the extra points. What I don't understand is the actual combat function of Seraphim because they don't appear to be good at range or CC.

I've read that they can be really useful in Tank Hunting and tying up units and laying down some twin-linked flamer action. But I'm thinking that a Dominion would be better and more mobile in terms of fire power. A minimal Squad for them is about 5 sisters but can carry up to 4 special weapons, plus the vet can carry some weapons as well.

An interesting thing about this squad is that it can take an Immolator for 65 Points, but it can use its Twin Heavy Flamers no matter how far it has moved. Which is pretty interesting in how its similar to the IG Hellhound but with a Rhino Armor Value. I'm seeing that this could be of more use in Tank Hunting then the Daemonhunters own Storm Troopers.

i have also came across the same idea: using a sisters of battle dominion squad instead of stormtrooper squad. I actually have a thread on this site about the differences between stormtroopers and sisters.
I will put down a few of the points here:
-Sisters have a better save
-Sisters have a better defualt weapon
-Sisters have acess to faith points
For one extra point Sisters are alot better.

The downside: If you take a Dominion squad instead of a Stormtrooper squad they will no longer count as troops meaning you cant take objectives with them.
Another idea could be to just take a regurlar Sisters squad with 2 melta guns if you want some anti-tank. This way the squad can capture objetives. But the minimum number of models in a Sisters squad is 10 so it will cost more points then a 5 man Stormtrooper squad.

Just something to think about

Yeah, I guess one of the drawbacks of taking SoB's is the minimum 10 models per squad. Though if your using them to take objectives I'd want a 10 woman Sister squad over the same or less IST squad.

Both the Dominion squad and the Seraphim squad are good choices for tank hunting. It all depends on how you use them...
Remember, in 5th ed, Seraphim (being jump infantry w/ jump packs) can also deep strike. And as long as their Sister Superior is alive, they use 3 dice when performing a test of faith. With 2 flamer templates added to the TL bolt pistol shots, a successful Divine Guidance can be really lethal to infantry. Of course, you can either give the Sister Superior melta bombs (if she's a veteran) or you can give the whole squad melta bombs. Moving 12" and assaulting 6" makes them very mobile. Plus they have a very special Hit and Run ability that's actually better than the universal rule. It's automatic for them if they want to.
Dominion squads are good too because you have a transport that can serve other functions (mobile terrain, etc). Howvever, they just have less CC capability (WS 3) and are slower than seraphims (I 3).

I'd say that seraphim would be a better choice than the dominion squad, although the dominions do get quite a few perks you can't overlook the seraphim's twin linked weaponry. And believe me, a 7 woman seraphim squad with 2 twin-flamers WILL hurt and not be easily forgotten!
